Art as a tool of transformation

Since immemorial times, the transformer and therapeutic potentials of art were appre-

ciated by indigenous peoples of the Peruvian Andes. To date, Quechua culture andlanguage are oral and visual rather than written. Moreover, the early chroniclers ofthe internal armed conflict (IAC, 1980-2000) were potters, poets and folk musicians.

During the IAC and after, artistic expressions based on the collective work help thecommunities to deal with unresolved emotions, exploring relationships and conflicts. However, the traumatic load of the internal armed conflict (the most severe in the his-tory of Peru, according to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission) has proven to betoo intense for the indigenous communities to be easily processed by traditionalmechanisms of memory, interpretation and forgetfulness.

Arts allow multiple interpretations of reality and could serve as a healing expressionof traumatic memories and non-threatening ways to confront the "others", in a power-ful way: fostering commitment through shared activities of collaboration and co-creation. As part of our proposal, the renowned Peruvian artists Miguel Delgado and

Amiel Cayo provide a set of tools of artistic expression that will help the communitiesto address past experiences of violence and to construct respect for human rights.

The creative work will be developed in two stages:The first will launch a collective creative project. The construction work will bedeveloped gradually, and the communities will have total freedom and control of

what they want to share and play into scene.

The second will test and improvise through a dramatic scheme. All contributions will be articulated to fit the elements worked in an structure. The manner ofpresentation of the work will depend on the possibilities offered by the environ-ment.

The work will be developed in Sacsamarca and Colcabamba, indigenous communities who were antagonists during the years of the IAC, and between which there were vio-lent clashes that left dead and wounded people. In recent years, thanks to the inter-

vention of EPAF, has developed a process of reconciliation that has even led to the joint construction of a memorial to honor the fallen during the IAC.

However, there are still unprocessed rivalries and conflicts that result in individualand collective consequences: post traumatic stress disorder, alcoholism, domestic vi-

olence and gender. The Field School will take place in these two communities, to helpcomplete a reconciliation process that has already made significant progress.
