Nikki, the five-year-old psychologist A child psychologist writes that the most important lesson he has learned in his field was taught by his own five-year-old daughter Nikki. One afternoon the psychologist was busy weeding the garden, a drudgery that he wanted to be done with as soon as possible. Nikki meanwhile was having a wonder-ful time throwing the weeds into the air, singing and danc-ing around. He yelled at her, demanding that she stop. Nikki walked away, then came back, and said, “Daddy, I want to talk to you.” “:Yes, Nikki?” “Daddy do, you remember before my fifth birthday? From the time I was three to the time I was five, I was a whiner. I whined every day. When I turned five, I decided not to whine anymore. That was the hardest thing I’ve every done. Dear Parishioners: We’re in the midst of the contagious season: flu, colds, G.I. viruses, etc. But our grouping has had a high level con-tagion of boiler problems, all four churches having big-time, I hear, expensive issues. A small explosion at Saints Peter and Paul School kept the kids in extra layers for a week. St. Felix was next with engine problems in the organ and heat-ing issues for both church and rectory buildings. Then Holy Family had a pump that needed replacing. The same week St. Cecilia had a freezing church on Saturday that needed emergency assistance. Hopefully, everything is working and can get us through the winter. Insurance will help with the school boiler but the other three are all to be paid from checking account and savings. In my bulletin articles, I am going to shine a spotlight on some of the wonderful ministries that go on in our four parishes. My hope is that you may feel the Holy Spirit nudging you to get involved. This will strengthen the personal holiness of the individual and help build unity and fellowship for our new parish. We’ve focused already on the Welcome Retreats which are coming later this month so I would like to spotlight the Holy Name Society. What is it? There is so little reverence for the name of God in our culture. The Holy Name Socie-ty is a spiritual confraternity of men within the Catholic Church for lay people, religious and clergy. The mission is to promote devotion and reverence to the Holy Name of God and Jesus and to help members grow in holiness. The Holy Name Society helps its members to become better Catholics, family members, neighbors, citizens, employees and em-ployers. WHAT A WEEK! THE WEATHER HAS TAKEN IT’S

TOLL! First: our Pipe Organ died and is need of an new air

pump. This will cost c. $600 Second: the air handler in the church that pumps out the heat that we desperately need this time of year died as

well. To fix it, we need a new circulating pump at a cost of $1950

Third: While the technician was here trying to find out why the air handler wasn’t working, he told us that the

boiler that heats the Friary, Office was red tagged because it was leaking carbon monoxide.

Whatever you can do to help us with these unexpected bills will be greatly appreciated.

LENTEN REGULATIONS

1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the United States.

2. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 18-59. No one should consider this obligation lightly.

3. Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be considered harmful are not obliged to fast, but should perform some other act of penance or charity.

4. Pastors and parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are educated in the authentic sense of penance and encour-aged to do acts of penance suitable to their age.

5. All members of the Christian Faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten sea-son beyond what is prescribed by the law.

Put Out Into Deep Water And Lower Your Nets For A Catch – When we reflect on the life and ministry of Jesus it is pretty clear that so much of it was unex-pected. God’s chosen peo-ple were certainly awaiting a Messiah, a Savior, but they were expecting a rich

and powerful king, not an itinerant preacher. Even the people Jesus surrounded himself with – the poor, sinners, the marginalized – were unexpected. Why wouldn’t the Savior surround himself with more influential people? Yet, we know that Christ came to save all, not just some and that he casts his net far and wide in order to draw all people to himself. As followers of Christ, we seek to be his face and hands and heart in the world today and we look for countless ways to invite others to share in his life of faith. The words he speaks to Peter and the Apostles are spoken to us. “Do not be afraid” to “put out into deep water” and inspire the hearts of everyone you meet to know and love Jesus. While you may not think so, your witness of faith can be just what someone else needs to go deeper themselves in their relationship with the Lord.
