The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process by which adults are received into the Catholic Church. The focus

of the RCIA program is to instruct adults on the beliefs and teachings of the Catholic Church, while at the same time fur-

thering the spiritual development of the candidate and catechu-mens.

Adults who are either not Catholic or who were baptized Cath-olic but not catechized as children are welcome to RCIA to learn more about the Catholic faith. After several months of friendly, informational sessions, participants may elect to pre-pare for and finalize initiation into the Catholic Church. Con-tact Fr. Mark for further info: 724-775-0801 or [email protected] or just come Tuesdays, 7 PM to the Lower room of Office Bldg.

When sturdy love is what you need . . . Michelle was at work when a friend texted the link to a news-paper article. It included a photo of an icy Montana highway, a pickup with the hood smashed in and a blue Subaru Outback that had been cut in half. According to the story, the woman who had been driving the Outback was their former high school classmate Deirdre. Deirdre survived, but her three-year-old daughter Zoe was killed. The tragedy dredged up painful memories for Michelle. Three years before, Michelle and her husband, Eric, lost their 22-month son, Seamus, when they were struck in a crosswalk by a careless driv-er. Michelle writes that their marriage became “like a ship that had weathered a bad storm — grateful and relieved to be afloat, but the damage was extensive.” The couple had just become parents again. The twins, a boy and a girl, had just turned one and the family was about to celebrate Christmas for the first time in three years. “Having more children did not reduce the sadness that had become the identifying feature of our marriage, but it did force our hearts to expand to accommodate other, happier emotions,” Michelle remembers. Michelle had not talked to Deirdre in 20 years. Michelle wasn’t sure what to do. One afternoon, while the twins were napping, Michelle retrieved from the basement a wicker basket of cards they had received when Seamus died. There are no words . . . You are in our hearts . . . I cannot imagine your pain. No one can think of the perfect thing to say at such times. But Michelle remembered the com-fort the notes had brought her, and so decided to send Deirdre a note. To her surprise, Deirdre replied by e-mail and the two were soon regularly exchanging texts. In April, Michelle had a trip planned to Montana, and they arranged to meet. Michelle and Deirdre greeted each other with a hug. There was no small talk. Walking together through the streets of Deirdre’s neigh-borhood, they talked about watching their children die, moving easily between medical terms and “mother” terms. Michelle asked Deirdre how her marriage was holding up. And Deirdre opened up about the struggle her husband was having over the decision to withdraw care for Zoe. Michelle listened, giving Deirdre space to voice her fears, and then offering the assurance of a wife and mother who had been through the same devastating experience herself, and found the way to move on. Michelle later wrote that she hoped Deirdre would discover what she learned: “that grief is exactly as painful as you think it will be, but with time you will learn to love your sadness because of the tiny shoots of joy and gratitude that sprout around it, like new growth on scorched earth. As she drove home from Deirdre’s, Michelle “thought about the comfort of sturdy, unglamorous things, my marriage among them. Ours may not be a great love story, but set against a backdrop of cruel nature and boundless beauty, I didn’t need it to be.” Good marriages, imperfect but “sturdy,” manifest the love of God at its most powerful: love that enables spouses to navigate together life’s hard roads of fear, heartache and illness. As ministers of the marriage sacrament, wives and husbands, in their love for one anoth-er, help all of us to recognize the great love of God the Father made real for us in the person of his Christ, the Bridegroom. Throughout Scripture, God speaks of his love for humanity in terms of espousal; Christ, who performed his first miracle at a wedding, called himself “the Bridegroom” who comes to bring his people to the wedding feast of the Father. Spouses, in their “sturdy” love centered in selfless trust, are living signs to all of us of the hope of God’s great wedding ban-quet.

Dear Parishioners: Some things for consideration this week: This Tuesday, January 22, is the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision that permits abortion on demand in the U.S.A.

We are asked on this day to make personal acts of penance, prayer and reparation for this great blight upon our nation. Monday, January 21, is the national holiday honoring the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King. The whole area of civil rights

and racial tensions is also a problem for our nation that constantly needs much prayer and personal examination. The week of prayer for unity began last week on Friday, January 18, and concludes on the 25th which is the Feast of the

Conversion of St. Paul. The story of Paul’s conversion is an important moment for ALL Christians. What an inspiring and amazing coincidence that he who was such an avowed enemy of the Christians would become our greatest teacher. God can – and does – call each of us, no matter what our sins.

I put in a plug for the Parish Share drive at Rochester and Freedom last week. Holy Family has made theirs. Most proba-bly, St. Felix did too. It’s important that we exceed the Parish Share goal in order to make extra savings for the parish that is assess-ment free. We are required to pay our goal anyway, so this can be a very good source of revenue.

Next week is National Catholic Schools Week. There are a number of activities and special events to which everyone is invited. More details will be published next week.

I apologize that I missed the Monday deadline for your bulletins last week. I had shared these thoughts with the others which now I do with you.

There’s something I’ve noticed throughout Advent. Attendance was solid. Sacrament of Penance opportunities were very busy. People are calling about baptisms. People are returning to the Church even after being gone a good while. It seems that even though there is anger and more than a few departures over the Grand Jury report, the folks who are staying are taking their faith more seriously.

I do believe, as I’m sure do all of you, that God can bring about goodness even in the worst of situations. Perhaps that is what I’m noticing. People are living their faith because it is their faith. It’s not about the man who is the priest but what we believe about Jesus that makes us who we are and is the focus of our religion. One parishioner quoted a young woman she had seen in a

TV interview “We worship God, not the priest.” Certainly it seems that God is actively at work. Fr. Bob

DID YOU KNOW that Quigley Catholic High School has a 1 to 10 Teacher /Student ratio? Also, over 90% of the students earn college scholarships. To find out more about this excellent school right in our backyards, plan to come to the Open House on Sat. Feb. 9, 7 to 9 PM or Mon., Mar. 4, 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Obviously Catholic Edu-cation costs money, but check out the many HS financial scholarships available to help you send your child to this great school. We are very proud of AUTUMN WHEELER who made highest honors this first semester; and DAWSON SUMMERS who received high honors as well.

IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE? The collections listed below show that we’re $2501.25 less than last year for the Christmas holidays. Yet our attendance on 12/15 and 12/16 was 531; and on 12/22 and 12/23 was 561 and finally on 12/24 and 12/25 was 987. So, twice the people on Chr istmas, but over $2,000 less. We’d really appreciate your help in making up for this shortfall. If we all gave an extra $5.00 each

THE ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY Will now minister to all the communities in our cluster: Beaver, Bridgewater, New Brighton, Vanport, Rochester and Freedom. With the welcome addition to our community of Rochester. Freedom and New Brighton in an already large service area, our team needs your help. There are people in our communi-ties who are facing crises in their lives and need our assis-tance. They do not have to be Catholic or members of our par-ishes to obtain assistance. So, we need more volunteers! There are 3 levels of volunteers: Active—Catholic, regularly

attend meetings, participate in conference works; Associ-ate—participate in Confer-ence works and may or may not attend meetings; Contrib-uting—makes regular finan-cial donation to the Society. If you have questions or wish

to volunteer, call the hot line at 724-312-6781 and leave a mes-sage and someone will get back to you.

THANK YOU FOR MAKING

ST. FELIX PARISH YOUR FIRST

AND FAVORITE CHARITY.

REMEMBER YOUR LOVED ONES AT MASS

Each parishioner can request three Masses (Two Sunday dates and one weekday) for a donation of $10 each. You can also have Masses celebrated at any of our grouping churches; but there will be a wait list to record your intentions and church of choice to be included on a first come, first served

basis after all interested parishioners have a chance to select their three allotted dates.
