Established in 1946 by U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright and the U.S. Government

Ethos of ‘swords into ploughshares’ – surplus WWII materials sold to fund two-way academic exchanges to the U.S.

Grown to become the largest education scholarship program in the world, operating between the U.S. and 160 countries. To date, over 360,000 Fulbright Scholars worldwide

Over 5,000 alumni of the Australian-American Fulbright program since establishment in 1949

Over 30 Australian Scholarships on offer per year

Postgraduate Scholarships – including sponsored scholarships, to undertake U.S. based research towards an Australian Master’s or PhD or to enrol in a postgraduate degree program at a U.S. institution (3 –10 months duration)

Postdoctoral Scholarships – including sponsored scholarships, to undertake postdoctoral research in the U.S. – aimed at applicants who have completed a PhD within the last 5 years (3 –10 months duration)

Professional Scholarships – including sponsored scholarships, for mid-career candidates in the private / public sector, poised for movement to leadership positions, or mid-level academics whose research has industry / professional links. Application proposals must include an educational component, such as research and / or a short-course (3 – 4 months duration)

Senior Scholarships – including sponsored scholarships, for academics at the level of associate or full professor in a range of academic fields to undertake U.S. based research (3 – 4 months duration)

Distinguished Chair – sponsored by Kansas State University, for a Professor with an exceptional career to undertake up to six months research at Kansas State University in the field of Agriculture or Life Sciences (3 – 6 months duration)

General Postgraduate Scholarships: Five on offer per year, any field/ discipline

State based - Fulbright NSW Scholarship across some categories (Postgraduate and Postdoctoral)

Fulbright Indigenous Scholarships – Two scholarships across all categories (Postgraduate, Postdoctoral, Professional and Senior), sponsored by Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet

Fulbright Anne Wexler Scholarship in Public Policy - One scholarship for two-year Master's degree in Public Policy studies in the U.S. in key areas such as health, sustainability, energy, climate change, regional security, education, political science, history or governmental relations. Includes tuition, additional allowances; sponsored by Department of Education and Training

Application Process

Project proposal

Personal statement

Three confidential referee reports required - submitted online

Host institution letter of support / invitation (not necessary at postgraduate level)

Copies of official, complete and certified academic documents (where applicable)

Application Timeline

Applications are open from March 1st - August 1st each year

Applicants will be invited for interview in August / September

All applicants will receive notification of the outcome of their application by the end of the year

Successful scholarship recipients will attend an Orientation Program and Gala Presentation Dinner in March

Scholarship recipients can depart for the U.S. between July 2018 - June 2019

Preparing your application

• Know which category you want to apply for

• Write first draft as soon as possible AND give to people outside of your field

Support is available for University of Newcastle Fulbright applicants in the form of:

If you are interested in applying for a Fulbright scholarship, you need to complete a UON Internal Expression of Interest (EOI) Fulbright Scholarships Form (available on the www.newcastle.edu.au/fulbrightprograms website) and email to [email protected]

To take advantage of the application review and feedback, all draft applications must be emailed to [email protected] no later than Friday 7 July 2017.

Support for U.S. Applicants

The UONis in its second year of sponsorship for two scholarships offered in the Fulbright program – a Fulbright Distinguished Chair, and Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholarship

These programs will enable recipients to conduct research at UON that aligns with one or more of the 19 UON Priority Research Centres (PRC).

U.S. scholars who are interested in applying for a UON sponsored Fulbright Scholarship, should in the first instance, contact [email protected]

The Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research and Innovation will facilitate contact between applicants and the relevant PRC.
