19 FEBRUARY, 1979Dear Brethren:

Thank you once again for your loyal support and prayers for us during thispast month. You are to be commended for seeking first God's kingdom andHis righteousness in a day and age uhen so many are turning away.

In these days ue earnestly need your prayers. Please pray for our family, and pray for the work that the Lord has given us to do. Pray for the guidanceof His spirit in our lives and in our labors. Ue are fighting for our verylives against Satan and his demons, and only God can give us the victory throucour Lord Jesus Christ.

I am so thankful to God for His love and mercy. What a joy to know and experience His forgiveness through the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. UJhenour spirits are broken and ue come to Him in repentance He does not despiseour broken heart, but heals and restores and recreates a clean heart withinus. Oh praise His blessed name for thisl This is the good news that we havefor the world today.

Last week I travelled by motorbike northwards to Ashton, about a 3 and a halfhour journey through Stellenbosch, over the mountains at Du Toit's kloof, beyond Uorcester and the Hex River and on to the other side of Robertson. There on the Prospect Farm,.! brought a message on T-HE vMTJ^.-ISTRY OF THE CHURCH,About 75 were present from'the surrounding area, and what-.a;,joy it was to seethree come forward to give their hearts to the Lord. The brethren then welcomeBrother Ntobi as their hew minister with songs and gifts, and then fed us asumptuous chicken dinner." Uith gasoline running low on the return trip Ihad to switch to the reserve tank outside Grabouw and still travel 50 milesover Sir Lowry's Pass to our home. I just barely made it.

The Bible Seminary is now well into its third year classes, and I am now usingthe 'bike extensively in going to Sir Lowry's Pass on Tuesdays uith classes onLUKE, Last Ulednesday at Macassar I taught SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY, and this Thurscat Elsies River our class was on the book of PHILIPPIANS. It is such a joy toteach these brethren because they are so receptive, and always have questionsduring our discussion time after the lesson.

Our family is enjoying the last days of summer in Cape Town. I have takenboth Nancy and Timothy around the peninsula on the motorbike. This week-endue took a drive out to Stellenbosch, and went for walks through UJynberg andClaremont. Nancy's arm is still giving her occassional pain. Timothy has beenuith me swimming at Fish Hoek, and to Moto-cross at Killarney. I am havingpersonal Bible studies and talks with Tim as well as teaching him new hymnsat his own request. I confess with deep regret that I have awoken very lateto the prime importance of my ministry to my own family. I pray to God thatit is not too late.

In the battle of the Israelites Aaron and Hur held up Moses' hands and thus thevictory was won. I am only a man — and I am a weak man — but with yourprayers and your help a mighty victory is being and shall be won in my life,in my home, and in the South African mission work.

Always rejoicing,

UMPL aiBLL olMIIMARY

Dear Brethren;

Ue bring you warm greetings in the name of Jesus Christ, our precious Lord, who loved us and shed his life's blood to rescue us from sin. Uhat auionderful Lord He is, and hou ue praise him every day. Ue do pray thatevery blessing from him may be yours, and that his grace, mercy and peaceshall fill your hearts and souls.

Ue are rejoicing in further victories for the Lord being won here in CapeTown. Last Lord's Day two more uere baptized into Christ at Mfuleni, andthere is a group from the 7th Day Adventist church uhich iu Inter!^- r! inlearning more of God's Uord and are planning to be present this Loru's Day.I am planning to bring a message on "CHRIST SETS US FREES

At Elsies River ue now have another neu student, and the brethren are eagerto learn and rejoice in the classes. Uhat a privilege it is to share uiththem my faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and the assurance that He gives ofcleansing from sin, strength in trials, and hope for the future.

At Sir Loury's Pass Brother Hodujana has been reaching out to other laborerson the farm with the message of God's Uord. Ue are continuing our studieson "LUKE" with him and the brethren of that area.

This ueek at Macassar.j,,,brought-^ lesson on 1 THESSALQNIANS. Brbther DavidJantjiea has been J^ll" t^is but he was able to attend the lesson^. ". ..Brothers Guga and'Desemeia eacb^.brought a carload of students uith themi['

Your prayers and support are a constant source of joy and encouragement tous brethren, and ue uould urge you to continue to remember us. In the midstof the problems and trials that beset us ue offer up thanksgiving to God foryou uho so faithfully stand by us. Most of all ue rejoice uith Paul uho said,"The Lord stood by me." Be sure that God uill richly bless you for this,

I have previously mentioned to you that our old Peugeot uas in need of tradingin since it had covered over 16D,0D0 kilometers of rough South African roads,Ue have been able to trade it in on a neu Peugeot 504 for an additional 212D0.DQdeposit and payments of 3250.00 per month. This car gets over 30 miles tothe gallon, but gasoline in South Africa is over 22.00 per gallon,

Ue uant to challenge each of you brethren to help uith these added expensesfor the car. All it uill take is an additional 25.00 per month from each ofyou uho receive this personal letter direct from us in South Africa, ue do notneed to emphasize the added expenses of travel these days, but in the missionuork it is a vital essential. To reach the people I must keep moving, Uhen Itravel alone I use the motorbike, uhich gets over 60 miles to the gallon.

Brethren, pray for us. Pray for me, that God shall g^nt me grace to bear theburdens and trials that beset me. Pray for my family, that God shall bind ustogether in His love. Pray for those uho labor uith me, that God shall givethem strength and uisdom. Pray for the church that Jesus loves, and uashes uithhis Dun blood to present it to Himself pure, uithout spot or urinkle.

Beloved Brethren:

Every remembrance of you brings us joy and thanksgiving of heart. You haveprayed for us. You have supported our work. In all of this you have encouraged us to continue our uork of teaching and preaching in the Cape Touinarea.

TuiD uieeks ago Timothy and I travelled by motorbike to Ashton, 125 miles northof Cape Toujn. I brought a message at the funeral of Brother Maase. He mas abrother of our minister at the Prospect Farm. Over 600 people had come fromnear and far. Many of them uere not able to get into the building. Some camein chartered busses, uihen we face death it is good to know that we have aGood Shepherd who is the Resurrection 8. Life, who takes the sting out of death, and even makes death our servant. As I stood on a mound of dirt at theI spoke of the joy of knowing Jesus in person. It was also good to talk withseveral of the brethren afterwards, and share afterwards at the farm in thewashing of hands and eating of corn in the traditional Xhosa manner.

Classes at the Seminary have now entered the 2nd term of the 3rd year, subjects are:-

PRINCIPLES OF CHURCH AND SEMINARY ADMINISTRATION.PASTORAL EPISTL£^a:'.;^1jj8^-fcTIM0THY, TITUS, PHILEMON. 'PROMOTION ANDvPUBLiC .RELATIONS.

Timothy has been accompanying me..on some of my teaching and prebchlng'••triTDB.He has also been taking notes at the classes and bringing lessons to thechildren. Unfortunately we had an accident with the motorbike last week. Liepraise God that He was with us, and we both landed on grass with little morethan the wind knocked out of us. The bike's front forks were bent and it isnow being fixed.

Our

Our Easter Services were held this year at Mfuleni. Themes for the 3 days were:[ilHAT CHRIST HAS DONE. UiHAT THIS MEANS TD US, AND WHAT UE MUST DO. My lessonon Friday evening was: "He has risen" and on Sunday morning, "Ue must share Hissuffering." Brother Ntobi had the services well orgardzed and the programtyped.

South Africa is enjoying mild autumn weather, and our family has taken advantageof it by going for long walks both in the liJynberg area and down at the seaside. The brethren at Macassar are now advanced to the point where they are holdingtheir own Sunday evening services, while Nancy and I have Communion at home.

Brother Lufele of Ujorcester has called and asked us to come and preach there,so Lord willing I will be going there next Lord's Day.

Lie would ask your prayers for Brother Ntobi's new classes at Nyanga, for BrotherbJilson at Elsies River who is having problems at home, for our new preachers,Brothers Guga, Jantjies and Desemela, for myself and my family. In all of ourtrials we rejoice that God is with us, and that we can trust Him to keep all ofHis promises. Lie pray that God will bless and guide you by His Spirit.

Yours in His wonderful love,

May, 1979 ^63

Dear Brethren:

What a joy it is to greet you again in the precious name ofChrist our Lord who cleanses us from all sin, and delivers us fromevery trial. Your prayers and support are appreciated so much.Last month we received $1,481.62, but we need $1,650.00 a month because we are still paying back $500.00 per month on a loan for myrecent furlough trip.

Timothy, now 10, accompanied me last month on the motorbikethrough Stellenbosch, over Du Toit's Kloof, beyond Worcester, across the Hex River, past Robertson to Ashton -- 125 miles northof Cape Town. Over 600 people had gathered for the funeral of oneof our elders. The Africans appreciate straight talk; and I spoketo them of the certainty of death, the need for preparation, thepeace of sins forgiven, and the joy of knowing Jesus. My own recentexperience with the Lord enabled me to speak from the depths of myheart. Afterwards Tim and I returned to the farm to share in thewashing of hands and eating of corn in the traditional tribal manner. The long trip back made us quite "saddle-sore" and we rested andmoaned quite a bit after getting home.

Since gas is $2 a gallon here we use the motorbike quite a lot.Unfortunately Tim and I had an accident last month, but God was withus and we landed on grass with just a few bumps. I am preparing anoutline of lessons on the Pastoral Epistles for Brother Ktobi toteach at Nyanga. Brother Fose is starting a new work at Paarl.Brother Matutu, elder at Guguletu, is a little jealous of the newministers, and I am planning to talk to him on Sunday.

The work at Macassar is progressing with Brothers Desemela,Jantjies and Guga now preaching, and several have been baptized recently at the Faure River.

Easter services were held this year at Mfuleni, going from GoodFriday through to Sunday. Our themes were: WHAT CHRIST DID, WHAT THISMEANS and WHAT WE MUST DO. I spoke Friday evening on "The Resurrection" and Sunday morning on "Sharing His Suffering".

I have written to Brother Djakumene at Upington regarding hisordination, and to Brother Leve at Port Elizabeth about a preachingtrip to that area. Brother Lufele has phoned me to come and preachat Worcester and we are planning to do that as well.

We are now in the 2nd term of our 3rd year at the Cape BibleSeminary with classes on PASTORAL EPISTLES, CHURCH ADMINISTRATION andPUBLIC RELATIONS. Since A1 Zimmerman is now on furlough there is anextra burden on me, so we are going a little slower. At Guguletu 2weeks ago I brought a lesson on I TIMOTHY, and last Lord's Day atMfuleni X preached on Psalms 22-24. Timothy was also with me then.Next term's classes are HEBREXJS, JAMES & JUDE AND 1 & II PETER.

is very ill with water on the brain. We do ask your prayers for her. Kancy has alsobeen ill recently with a kidney infection. Our younger daughter, Sandie, is stillat Rochester with her Aunt Sandy:and Uncle Howard Ganong. She is enjoying it verymuch. Timothy is on the soccer team here at Aliwal Road School, and doing well onthe team. In spite of our trails and turmoil we can still rejoice in the presenceof God and His wonderful promises to us. When we come to the end of the road, andwe do not know where to turn, we can quietly and confidently trust Him, expectingHim to act, and He will make a way for us.

Since Macassar is now able to conduct their own Sunday evening services llancyand I now have Communion at home. In my Bible lessons with Timothy we are goingthrough the Gospel of John. In my own personal devotions Xhave been studying thebook-of Psalms.. What a. privilege it is to pray to God, and to receive His'more precious than gold, sweet§r thah tHe horteyctjmb.

Time is going by so quickly. Opportunities to serve the Lord are here todaythat may not come again tomorrow. Brethren please pray for us in our^labors here, that we may make the most of every oppotunity to teach and preach God s preciousword, and that our very lives may show forth the grace of him who loved us andgave himself for us. Pray that the Holy Spirit may dwell within us, and that Godmay mould us as the Potter moulds the clay, while we submit to His will. Kay thegrace and peace of our Lord be with you.

Beloved Brethren:

Houi ue do praise and thank God for His uonderful grace to.us. Uhile ue uere yetsinners he sent His Son, Jesus Christ, who kney no sin to become sin for us thatue might become the righteousness of God in Him. Truly ye have gone from RAGS TORICHES. All our righteousness yas as filthy rags, but noy ye have received theriches of God through Christ Jesus.

Uie thank God also for ycu. Your prayers for us are specially needed and deeplyappreciated at this time. Yet through all the trials and tribulations God haspoured out the overyhelming blessings of His grace so that there is not roomenough to receive it.

God has blessed us yith a ney congregation at LUANDLE tounship near the Strand, about 30 miles out of Cape Toyn. The first service yas held in a used tin-shantytype building this yeek-end. They met all night Saturday night and Timothy andI yent out on the motor-bike Sunday morning. A light dey yaa on the ground, andon a circle betyeen Phillipi and Nyanga yhere a truck had spilled some diesel yeyent sliding. God yas yith us, and there yas no damage to us or the 'bike, soye picked it up and carried on. 3L yere in attendance as Brother Ntobi brought alesson on elders, and I spoke on I PETER 1. The brethren kindly gave Timmy a Disprinand some fruit to eat. After the service Brother Jantjies spoke to the people ofthe community through a loudspeaker.,gnd urged them to come to faith in Christ.

Our other ney congregation at 'PAARL'-Is progressing yell under the leadership ofBrother Fos6, and several ney families have been added recently.

On 20th May ye yelcomed a ney brother into membership at Mfuleni, falloying hisbaptism in the chilly early morning. Brother Ntobi brought a lesson on 1 Timothy 1,and 1 spoke on Coloasians 3.

The third year of classes at the CAPE BIBLE SEMINARY has just concluded its 2ndterm lessons on THE GOSPEL OF LUKE, I TIMOTHY, AND II THESSALONIANS; and ye arenoy starting the 3rd term yith lessons on HEBREUIS, 2TIM0THV AND I PETER, It isnou yinter in Southern Africa, and my trips on the motor-bike out to Macassar,Sir Loyry's Pass, Elsies River and the preaching points are often made in yindand rain. This calls for long underyear, extra clothing and 2 pairs of glovesl

Nancy is noy in Port Elizabeth yhere she has had the opportunity to visit withour eldest daughter, Alandra, and our grand-children. Little Kelly Sue yasseriously ill yith yater on the brain. She has been to hospital, but is noycompletely recovered. Ue thank God for this.

Timothy (ifc) is very interested in studying the scriptures, and ye have beengoing through JOHN, ACTS and noy ROMANS. Ue thank God for the privilege of prayerand for His precious Uord.

May I ask you to please continue to keep us and our needs before God in prayer. It is through much tribulation that ye must enter into God's kingdom, but thetrials are there to purify and cleanse us, and develop yithin our charactersthat patience and faith yhich drays us closer to God. May God richly bless you,and fill you yith His grace and peace.

A sinner saved by grace,P.S. Ue have just received yard from our younger daughter, Sandie, in Rochester,Mn, She graduates from Mayo High School this yeek, and plans to enter MinnesotaBible College in the Fall. Ue are very proud of her.

Dear Brethren In Christ:

Ule greet and thank you for your prayers and support on our behalf. May GodblesB and strengthen you with might in the inner man, and cause you to knouthat the same power which raised Christ from the dead is now working in you.

Uie are thrilled at the growth of the new work in Paarl under the preaching ofBrother Fosfe, which now has 9 members and a building of their own. The workat Lwandle township near Strand also continues with its tin-shanty type building. The brethren want me to visit these places regularly for teaching and preachingeach month, and I am hoping to do so.

jie are now setting up a regular monthly meeting of missionaries and African andColoured ministers at Guguletu on the last Thursday of each month. The programswill include, Lord willing, a lesson on the minister and his work, a devotionalmessage, a time of discussion for questions and problems, and a time of prayer.

Because petrol has risen from ^2.00 to SS3,DD a gallon in South Africa (yes, youread it right) I have changed my Thursday lessons from Sir Lowry's Pass to Guguletu. Tonight, Lord willing, begins our lessons on the book of HEBREWS,

Brother Leve writes from Port Elizabeth that their program of evangelism for theEastern Cape is well under way, but they need some more lessons. I have madephotostats of some lessons to send to him this week, and-^ill also be sendinghim translated lessons In Afrikaans and Xhoaa as they become available.

Hail, snow and even frost have been part of the winter scene here, and comingback from Macassar on a 30 mile trip at 10 pm in an icy mist was really biting.

I am now busy translating ray lessons on REUELATION into Afrikaans in preparationfor our last term of the 3rd and final year of study. David Matutu of Guguletuhas kindly offered to translate the lessons into Xhoaa as well. I am not certainof the future, and am thinking of the possibility of going to another field; butthe need for printed lessons is so great that I may well spend a year or so justIn lesson preparation, printing and translation before making any move.

Brother Ntobi is doing a fine job of teaching, and is a tremendous help to me inthe absence of Brother Zimmerman. I am still busy preparing outlines for him onTIMOTHY, TITUS, PHILEMON AND 3AME5. He is teaching at Nyanga and Macassar, andpreaching at Mfuleni and Guguletu as well as the out stations.

Our classes at the Cape Bible Seminary have now concluded tne 2nd term of the3rd year on LUKE, 2 THESS, and 1 AND 2 TIM. and we are now studying HEBREliiS,3AMES, AND 1 & 2 PETER. Last Lord's Day I brought a lesson at Mfuleni, andalso spoke outdoors after the service- This week, Lord willing, we shall becalling at Macassar in the afternoon, followed by an evening service there.

At home Tim and I have just gone through the book of ESTHER, Nancy and Tim leftthis morning for Plettenberg Bay where Alandra 3o is celebrating her 21st birthday tomorrow. Our grand-daughter Kelly Sue is now completely recovered, forwhich we praise and thank the Lord, but Alandra herself has not been well lately.Sandra is having a wonderful time at Rochester and looking forward to BibleCollege. Brethren, please continue to pray for us. Remember Philippians 1:6.

The life of a missionary is perhaps one of the most demanding lives that thereis. It is not for everyone. There are days, sometimes yeeka, and sometimesmonths, yhen you do not see your family. And even yhen you are home there aremany lessons and sermons to prepare. My particular situation "?or more than 12 years I have also held a full-time job from 8 AM to 5 PM, thenrush home and literally grab a sandyich in one hand Bible in thestraight out the door to go calling and hold Bible lessons often in a distantarea; and there were times yhen I did not get home till 3 or Athe next morning.Ayoman needs time; she needs attention; she needs a lot of love end affection. So does a family. And yhen they do not get it the foundations begin to crumble.Idhat do you say yhen your yife tells you that she yishes her skin yas black, sothat you yould spend more time yith her? Or yhen she fills out a form at churchrequesting the minister to come and visit her one evening, and you are the minister? Maybe you iaughj and maybe yhen you look back on it after your divorce, you cry. "

One might be tempted at first to think that no good can come out of such a situation, but this is not the case. First, it has brought me closer to God, andcaused me to rethink my values in life. Then it has also been a time of testingand refining of faith. Prayer has become more meaningful, and the yard of Godmuch more precious and personal. I have also been spending more time yith Timothyand drayn closer to him. My lessons and sermons are also much more personal, andI have been spending even more time in the Lord's york.

Even betyeen Nancy and I there haa groun a ney kind of relationship, a neyayareness of each other's needs and trials, and a ney friendship. In thelonelineBs yhich has been thrust upon us ye seek and find guidance and counaelfrom each other, and ye pray for each other.

The mission uork itself continues to groy. The ney church in Paarl is having aDedication Service this Lord's Day, and they have asked me to apeak. Last Lord'sDay Tim and I travelled to Guguletu yhere I preached and also spoke to the menafteryarda. This past month Brother Koeberg and I made preaching trips to Sal-danha Bay (100 miles north) and Graaff Reinet (LOO miles northeast of Cape Toyn).I am teaching yeekly at Guguletu, Macassar and Elsies River; have visited againat Sir Loyry's Pass, and spend Sunday evenings at Macassar yhere services havebeen started in 3 ney homes. In addition I have prepared and printed lesBona on"REUELATIDN" for next term and have already translated these into the Afrikaanslanguage.

What does the future hold? That I am prepared to leave in the hands of God. Ifirmly believe chat God still has a purpose for my life, and that He uho hasbrought us this far shall continue to lead us. Some may call me foolish, but Ihave seen far too many evidences of God's pgyer and yisdom to doubt Him noy.

Dear Brethren:

Holj I praise and thank God for your prayers and your support, particularlyin these exceedingly trying and difficult days. You have encouraged me /more than you shall ever knou in continuing in the faith and the work ofthe Lord Jesus Christ here in Southern Africa.

Last Lord's Day at LUiANDLE near the StrartC.\§,Hir^e baptized into Christ.I brought a message at the river, and preached at the shanty-type buildingon "THE MEANING OF BAPTISM." There were several there from Caledon wherea new group has been started, and we hope to visit them soon. The previousnight they had had an all-night service. I wasn't there, but they said theplace was packed.

This past month we held a service at Mbekweni township near PAARL, meeting ina school room, and I brought a lesson on "REUELATIQN." Brother Fosfe isministering there, and the church continues to grow.

Brother David..MatutU (sponsored by Brother A1 Zimmerman) is planning to/attend UinstdnSalem college next year. Since Brother Zimmerman is onfurlough I have been helping David by taking him to the American Embassy,

v the Bank and the Travel Agent. Brother David is a young man from Guguletu,^•end hopes to leave Cape. Town at the end of December •

.^Dy^churches here ^j^e^^ir^upset by those who teach the Sabbath, question//the'veracity of the book"''or Jonah, reject the scriptural nrdination. of

.//ministers, and seek to dominate the church by their own rules. Please praythat they may have wisdom and strength to stand firm in the faith.

CAPE BIBLE SEMINARY classes on REVELATION continue on Tuesday evenings atGuguletu, Uednesdays at Macassar, and Thursdays alternately at Matroosfontein,Tiervlei and Elsiea River. Last night at Elsies River I gave a survey ofthe Bible Books and the book of Revelation.

The motorbike is still going well. It needed a 25 Rand(23Q) service the otherday, and also had a puncture in Guguletu which meant a bit of pushing; but-that la nnnd exerci5g I. as is the 5 mile jog I do each day after my officework at Farmer's Co-op. Our daughter Sandy is now at Minnesota Bible College, while Tlmmy is just finishing his 5th grade at Aliwal Road School.

The first Sunday morning of this month I preached at both Guguletu and MfuleniIn the afternoan I visited some Christian friends in Phillipi, then rode toMacassar for a meal and preached at their evening service, 1 have also heldsome week-end meetings at Broadlans farm at the foot of Sir Lowry's Pass.

Plans for the future. Lord willing, include another trip to Graaff Reinet,an Easter Camp, and at the Bible Seminary a review of the previous 3 yearsclasses with examinations, the issuing of certificates, and the ordinationof those men who are approved and recommended by the local elders.

At this time of the year our thoughts turn to the coming of Christ. Let usalso remember that He is coming again. May his blood cleanse us, and mayHis Spirit mould us until we be found in His image without spot or blemishat the day of His return.

Yours in His wonderful name.
