Dear Colleagues, Patients, and Friends:

It has been my privilege to serve as The Thoracic Surgery Foundation’s President for the past 2 years. This time has afforded me the opportunity to learn and experience firsthand the generosity of the members of our specialty in supporting the Founda-tion’s research and education initiatives.

I am so grateful to you, our wonderful donors, who make everything we do possible. From exemplary patient care, to groundbreaking research, to educating the next generation of cardiothoracic surgery leaders, you are the heart and soul of all our endeavors.

2018 was a great year for The Thoracic Surgery Foundation. The Foundation’s established role as The Society of Thoracic Surgeon’s charitable arm has strengthened our fundraising potential and covered our administrative costs, enabling us to have a greater im-pact with our mission.

TSF is truly Your Foundation. Research grants, fellowships, and educational schol-arships from TSF represent all of our disciplines (cardiac, general thoracic, and congenital) and surgeons at all career stages. The Foundation’s awards have been instrumental in developing hundreds of young surgeons by providing the support needed for their career advancement. These awards also have been important stepping stones in furthering innovation in cardiothoracic surgery. I’m certain that under the leadership of TSF’s new President, Dr. Joseph Bavaria, the foundation will reach new heights.

If you have not given to the Foundation recently, I urge you to consider doing so now. And, if you generously donated in 2018, please consider another gift at this time. Let’s make 2019 TSF’s best year yet. You can click here or anywhere on the bottom of each page to make an online donation. Your generosity will help us ensure a bright future for surgeon-scientists and excellent care for our patients.

Thank you for your continued support of TSF.

Douglas E. Wood, MD, FRCSEd TSF President, 2017–2019

The Thoracic Surgery Foundation’s mission is to provide better patient care through four main avenues—research, education, global outreach, and innovation. To ad-vance the field of cardiothoracic surgery and improve the care we give to patients in the future, we must conduct research to better understand cardiothoracic dis-ease, and we also must train the next generation of cardiothoracic surgeons and surgeon-scientists. The research grants provided by the TSF are meant specifically for this purpose.

The TSF is the literal foundation for our specialty. Giving to the Foundation will help support innovative, impactful research, which will help patient care in the future. It also will help support today’s trainees and young cardiothoracic surgeons who will be the leaders in the field in the future. Grants for these surgeons can be extremely important for launching their research careers. I know this firsthand.

In 2005, I was a grateful recipient of a TSF grant that was co-sponsored by the NIH. This helped me devel-op the research skills I needed to cultivate a research program focused on thoracic aortic disease and help launch my career. I can’t begin to imagine what I would be doing right now if I hadn’t received that initial grant. So, contributing to the Foundation, both in terms of lead-ership and in making donations, is an important way I can give back for everything that it has done for me.

It has been my pleasure and an honor to serve as the TSF Research Chair for the past 2 years. I wish to express my sincere thanks to the members of the Research Committee. This team of experts selflessly dedicated many long hours and tremendous effort to evaluate applications. Their thoughtful reviews and objective evaluations helped ensure that TSF resources would be used to support work with exceptional promise to advance the field and improve patient care.

me to continue my research on

lung premalignancy and cancer

prevention. The funding will

make it possible to generate the

additional data and publications

required to successfully apply for

future grants on the path to

becoming an independent surgeon-

“ My laboratory is studying the noninvasive diagnostic

potential of circulating transplant tissue-specific exosomes

in clinical heart transplantation. Thanks to the generous

support of the TSF, we have now successfully validated

detection and characterization of donor heart exosomes

from recipient circulation in heart transplant patients, and

preliminary data suggest that acute rejection leads to

time-specific changes in transplant tissue exosomes.”

“ It is a true privilege to receive this

prestigious award, and I would like

to thank the TSF for its support

an in-depth study of the genomic and transcriptomic

events that occur during the course of human donor

heart preservation. This funding also provided

important preliminary data on how valproic acid can

modify these molecular events and impact subsequent

ex-vivo heart perfusion.”

“ There are few specialties in American medicine in which early career research

is supported as well as cardiothoracic surgery, and TSF is a large part of the

reason why. As an early career congenital heart surgeon with early stage transla-

tional research, I have been so fortunate to gain support from the TSF. The Nina

to be competitive for further funding in the transition from fellowship to faculty.”

“ It is a great honor to have been awarded the Nina Starr

Braunwald Fellowship grant. While the award provides

the resources vital to the continuation and expansion of

my research, the biggest impact of this fellowship is the

opportunity to tread on the same path once taken by

many of the pioneers in cardiothoracic surgery. To me,

the fellowship does not just represent support for science.

The award and its past recipients collectively represent the

limitless roles that women can play and the immeasurable

impact that women can make on the field of surgery when

given the opportunity and the mentorship.

The Nina Starr Braunwald fellowship serves as a daily
