Funding sought for iconic Wine Capital Cycle Trail
Six South Australian Councils and Regional Development Australia SA are seeking Federal funding to develop an iconic cycling trail spanning 250 kilometres and four world renowned South Australian wine regions – Clare Valley, Barossa, Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale. Adelaide Hills Council Mayor Jan-Claire Wisdom says the Trail would lead to fresh opportunities for local communities and the development of valuable infrastructure for communities in bushfire and drought recovery. “This project has the potential to link 200 cellar doors and more than 500 businesses through one continuous trail that connects 25 towns impacted by fire and drought. “The Adelaide Hills community has been hard hit by the Cudlee Creek Bushfire and we see the Wine Capital Cycle Trail as providing fresh growth and renewal opportunities for tourism businesses, but also a way to strengthen community networks. “The Trail would build on existing shared paths and trails to create a more connected community network, with the associated health benefits of safe and accessible cycling routes for everyone to enjoy.’ “All the other Capitals in ‘The Great Wine Capitals Global Network’ offer established wine tourism cycling trails and given our region’s natural beauty and abundant local produce, we have the chance to develop the best and brightest of them all. “I have no doubt this Trail would attract locals, interstate visitors and people from all around the world who value an immersive, healthy and truly local experience. “This project also demonstrates the strong collaboration between these six councils and multiple tiers of government towards one common goal for our communities, said Mayor Wisdom.” Note: See Attached Media Release from Regional Development Australia for details of the Building Better Regions Fund Round 4 Grant Application and Proposed Map of The Wine Capital Cycle Trail – Indicative route subject to further consultation)

ADELAIDE WINE CAPITAL CYCLE TRAIL
Connecting Wine Tourism Regions
The ‘Adelaide Wine Capital Cycle Trail’ project seeks to deliver an iconic cycling pilgrimage
spanning 250 kilometres and four distinct wine regions – Clare Valley, Barossa, Adelaide Hills and
McLaren Vale.
The ‘Adelaide Wine Capital Cycle Trail’ would reinforce Adelaide’s role as a strong member of the
‘The Great Wine Capitals Global Network’, for which all other Capitals have established wine
tourism cycling trails. The project will drive growth in wine and food exports, cycling events and
tourism spending, ultimately supporting employment opportunities in regional South Australia. To
this end, Adelaide will be explicitly connected to the trail, enhancing South Australia’s reputation
for family friendly, healthy and culturally immersive wine tourism.
Through the close collaboration of 6 councils and Regional Development Australia SA, this project
has the potential to link 200 cellar doors and more than 500 businesses through one continuous
trail. The creation of such an iconic trail (with associated maps, apps, marketing and signage) would
enable visitors and locals alike to experience the stories, people, food, beverages, and diverse
natural beauty of this glorious stretch of South Australian landscape.
Such a world-renowned cycling pilgrimage in South Australia, linking food and beverage tourism
businesses and connecting 25 towns impacted by fire and drought, would lead to fresh
opportunities for local communities and the development of infrastructure to assist regional South
Australia’s bushfire and drought recovery.
The Adelaide Wine Capital Cycle Trail Committee have applied for a Commonwealth Government
Building Better Regions Fund Round 4 Grant (BBRF4) to enable the whole trail to be brought to a
stage of “shovel ready”. It is expected that successful BBRF4 applicants will hear back around May
2020. Should this grant be secured, the following 12-18 months will focus on the strategic planning
and industry consultation required before infrastructure delivery commences. Subsequent trail
delivery will likely be the subject of further grant application(s), alongside investment from the
community and private sector. The project will require the commitment and support of all tiers of
government, industry and community to enable this project to reach its full potential.
Cycle tourism provides significant economic benefit; with more than 3 million visitors coming to
Australia to cycle, the industry has generated over $254M in economic benefit for Australian
communities. The 2019 Santos Tour Down Under in 2019 generated a record impact of $70.7
million, an 11% increase from the previous year’s event. The health benefits resulting from cycling
in Australia is estimated at over $150M, with the bike economy growing at a steady 5.3% per
annum.
The proposed Adelaide Wine Capital Cycle Trail will provide much needed support to local
communities looking to rebuild and diversify their local economy. The project supports a sense of
community, promotes opportunities for small business to grow, while furthering the health and
wellbeing of South Australians. The project intends to build safe cycling routes, provide affordable
leisure options and improve network links between tourism businesses and community facilities
for residents.
The project intends to enable each of the 4 wine regions involved to promote their distinctive
tourism offerings, while maintaining a seamless trail brand across and between these regions. The
trail would also offer tourism operators and their clients a further option for experiencing our
culturally rich, agriculturally diverse natural landscapes.
