Generic Management Learnership

NQF Level 4

What is a Learnership?

A learnership is a process of learning through which a candidate gains theoretical

knowledge and practical skills while working. The process leads to a qualification that is

recognised nationally (according to the National Qualification Framework).

The learning process consists of classroom based learning as well as on-the-job training.

Students who enrol in a learnership may be new employees at a company, who have

been hired specifically for the purposes of working while completing a learnership, or

they may be existing employees.

What is a Generic Management Learnership?

Generic Management (NQF 4) is a learnership that covers the skills needed to be an

effective supervisor, team leader or junior manager.

This learnership is a 12 month programme that consists of 150 credits. It is equivalent to a

one year FET (Further Education and Training) Qualification.

Who should do it?

Learnerships are available to unemployed and employed people with a Matriculation

Certificate who are interested in gaining a National Qualification.

The Generic Management Learnership is ideal for candidates who are junior managers,

team leaders, supervisors or any employees suited for progression to middle

management positions.

Benefits for the company

1. Tax Incentives

With the existing education crisis in South Africa, our government is encouraging

companies to up-skill their employees by granting tax incentives for each employee that is

registered for a learnership.

How does this work? For every learner that registers for a learnership, the company pays

less tax. This works as follows:

When an able-bodied learner starts a learnership, the company doesn’t have to pay tax

on a total of R30 000. When that same learner completes a learnership, the company gets

a further incentive of not paying tax on another R30 000. So for every learner that

completes a learnership the company has a total of R60 000 on which it doesn’t have to

pay tax.

ie: R60 000 x 28% (tax) = R16 800 --This is tax that the company doesn’t have to pay.

This holds true for every employee that is registered for a learnership. When a disabled

learner completes a learnership, a company does not have to pay tax on R100 000.

2. BBBEE Rating

Not only does a company earn points on the BBBEE scale for each delegate that

completes a learnership, the focus of BBBEE is changing to middle management rather

than junior management - the natural progression of employees in the workplace.

3. Skilled Staff

Above all, the company gains staff with more skills and a better understanding of the

business. Not only will learners become more productive, effective and efficient, they will

also be able to lead and manage their co-workers.

Benefits for the individual

1. Broaden your knowledge and marketability

On successful completion of the course you receive a National Qualification that not only

increases your value to your company, but also increases your knowledge base and skill -

set.

2. Transferability

The qualification is transferable, which means it is applicable to your current company,

but also to other sectors, as it teaches management principles.
