Dear Parents and Friends of GTIYO,

I am thrilled to welcome you to GTIYO’s premiere chamber music recital. This concert has

been many months in the planning and the students have put in a lot of hard work in preparation

for this performance.

My philosophy for holding this solo and chamber recital is this: Playing in an orchestra is very

different from playing a solo or even from playing chamber music. Yet, the different skills required

to excel at each of these types of performance are very much intertwined. In order to be a

strong member of the orchestra, one must have the confidence and artistic nuance of a soloist

while listening with a keen ear and communicating intimately with fellow musicians like a

chamber musician. In order to be a good soloist, one must also be able to communicate the music

intimately to an audience, just as every chamber musician or orchestra member must. In order

to be a good chamber musician or orchestra member, one must learn to meld their soloistic

personalities harmoniously with the musicians around them. That is why it is so important to foster

each student’s growth not only in orchestra, but in solo and chamber work as well.

This year, we have had so many student accomplishments that deserve recognition. First,

I’d like to congratulate the students who received superior ratings at the Ohio Music Education

Association (OMEA) Solo and Ensemble contest. Next, I’d like to congratulate all the students who

made District and State Honors Orchestra. We even had one student who performed in Carnegie

Hall in New York with the National American High School Honors Orchestra. Additionally, we had

students compete in the Ohio Buckeye String competition at the district and state level. Finally,

I’d like to congratulate all of the Monday Musicale scholarship winners. As music director, I am so

proud of all of the students for their hard work and dedication. These accomplishments are

a testament to what strong soloists and chamber musicians our orchestra members are. It takes a

lot of courage and determination to participate in these performances. Today, we would like to

showcase the culmination of all the hard work and passion these students have put into their

music. We hope you enjoy the concert!

Musically yours,

Mr. Yang Kun SongGTIYO Music Director and Conductor

PROGRAM NOTES

Sonatina Op. 100 by Antonin Dvorak. In 1893, the Bohemian composer, Dvorak, wrote theSonatina in dedication to his children. The piece was written and published in the United Stateswhile Dvorak was staying in New York City. Intended for young people, the piece represents thehappiness and innocence of childhood. So, here is the Sonatina, Op. 100, a work of Bohemianroots with an American inspiration, turned into a work of art through Antonin Dvorak.

Viola Concerto in C Minor by H. Casadesus. Henri Casadesus (1879-1947) was a Romanticperiod composer famous for works on the viola and viola d’amore. Famous for his viola concertos in the styles of J.C. Bach and George Frideric Handel, both of which were thought to be composed by the composers themselves. He is also famous for founding the “society ofancient instruments” with his friend and colleague Camille Saint-Saens.

The viola concerto in C minor has a long history of misattribution and false claims on its origin. Henri Casadesus had originally claimed that the piece was a work by Saint-Saens andthat he was simply editing it for him; furthermore, he claimed that the piece was based on a1789 piece by Johann Christian Bach that was originally played on viola da gamba. This storybecame further twisted until it was believed that the piece itself was written by J.C. Bach.Eventually, after examination of the documents it was determined that the piece was actuallyfully written by Casadesus himself in 1947 but was simply in the style of J.C. Bach.

Concertino No. 1 in C major, Op.7 by Julius Klengel. Julius Klengel- (September 24th,1859 – October 27th, 1933) was a romantic period German cellist who wrote theConcertino No.1 in C major Op. 7 in his earlier years. Julius Klengel became a member of the Gewandhaus Orchestra at the age of 15. He toured extensivelythroughout Europe as cellist and soloist of the Gewandhaus Quartet. All together he composed hundreds of pieces for the cello.

Concerto No. 1 in A Minor, BWV 1041 by J.S. Bach. The Violin Concerto in A Minor was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in the early 18th century, the Baroque period. It's thoughtthat Bach wrote the concerto while he was director of the Collegium Musicum in Leipzig. The motifs of the theme of the Allegro moderato appear in changing combinations and areseparated and intensified throughout the movement. Although this piece is something typical of Bach to compose, this is an altogether more yearning and melancholy concerto than any of his others..

Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major, BWV 1007 by J.S. Bach, is a part of Bach’s Six Suites forUnaccompanied Cello. It is one of the most frequently performed movements out of all of thesix suites and has been performed in many films, including Master and Commander.

Concerto in D Major, Op. 108 by August Nolck. While much is known about Bach and hisfamous cello suites, August Nolck was a German composer about whom there is only limitedbiographical information. Born in 1862, he was a virtuoso cellist who composed well over 300 works for the cello and the piano in the style of German Romanticism. He died in Dresdenin 1928 and, unfortunately due to the extensive bombing of Dresden in the final months of World War II, many of his works were lost or destroyed. His Concertino in D Major is one of thepieces that survived.

Page 13: G T INTERNATIONAL YOUTH ORCHESTRA Reci tal file14/07/2016 · his previous orchestra on a concert tour visiting ... In 2008, his group performed in Europe, visiting two other Toledo

Romanze for Viola, Op.85 by Max Bruch. Previously, romances in music was usually sung. However, during the Romantic period of music, Max Bruch(6 January 1838 – 2 October 1920)turned it into a lovely work for solo viola. He makes the instrument express a variety of moods, with the theme always recognizable played either by the viola or the piano. Throughout thispiece, tension builds up with mixed rhythms and an agitated section of music. Eventually, themain theme is played again, similar to the beginning with musical ideas repeated. This leads up to a beautiful end where the viola can finally show its true, magnificent tone. With this outstanding work, one can really feel Bruch’s emotions and what he went through in his life

Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 8 by Antonio Vivaldi. Born on March 4, 1678, Antonio Vivaldiwas an Italian composer known for his Baroque operas and his violin concertos known as “TheFour Seasons”. Many of his musical compositions were written for women opera ensembles andhe wrote them as a catholic priest. Antonio Vivaldi later died in the year of 1741.

The four seasons consist of “Spring”, “Summer”, “Autumn”, and “Fall”. These compositionswere written in 1723 and were Vivaldi’s most popular pieces. “Summer” by Vivaldi is about a hot and humid summer day that ends with a thunderstorm in the end. The 3rd Movement of“Summer” is referred to as “Storm” because of the way it was composed to represent a thunderstorm. The upbeat Presto tempo and the precise scales represent the thunder and lightning in the storm, while the repetition of the deeper notes represent the dark, thick clouds.Overall, including “Storm” and the many compositions in the “Four Seasons”, these well-knownpieces were a beginning to the idea of a concerto (a solo with an orchestra backing).

INTERMISSION

Merry-Go-Round of Life composed by Joe Hisaish, is from the Japanese Animator HayaoMiyazaki's film, Howl's Moving Castle. The movie, set in old Europe, plays with the ideas of magicand fantasy. The Merry-Go-Round of life also brings a similar tone of fantasy with its slighteerieness but playful tunes and runs. Originally for full orchestra, the piece has been adaptedfor five cello parts.

String Quartet No. 15 in D minor, K. 421 (K. 417b) by W.A. Mozart. Completed in 1783,this is one of a set of quartets that Mozart dedicated to Haydn, and it is the only oneset in a minor key. Mozart’s wife claimed that the rising passages in the violins represented her crying from the next room!

Divertimento No. 4, K. 439b (Anh. 229) by W.A. Mozart. Mozart composed five diverti-menti for three Basset horns, published posthumously, but now they are most oftenperformed by a trio of two clarinets and bassoon; today we hear an arrangement for three cellos.

3 Duets for 2 Violas, No. 1, F. 60 by W.F. Bach. Wilhelm Friedermann Bach (1710 -1784), wasthe eldest son of Johann Sebastian Bach (and his first wife Maria) and became a renownedorganist. In addition to much keyboard and church music, he composed many compositionsfor small instrumental ensembles, making use of contrapuntal styles learned from his father. Thisduet, No. 1 of three for Viola, reflects that contrapuntal style.

W. F. Bach was a genius at composing, but his income and employment becameunstable and he died in poverty. This baroque duet is a fantastic example showingwhen Wilhelm was happy in his life with the teamwork of two violas.

String Quartet No. 1 in F Major, Op. 18 by Ludwig von Beethoven. Beethoven’s F majorquartet, published as No.1, was actually his second attempt at string quartet writing. It under-went much revision by which it became perhaps the strongest work of the six quartets labeledopus 18. Beethoven sent its first version to his close friend, the violinist Carl Amenda, but twoyears later wrote to him, "Don't let anyone see your quartet as I have greatly changed it, as onlynow do I know how to write quartets properly." The first movement presents each of the fourplayers with equally interesting material.

Concerto in D Major for Four Violins by Georg Philip Telemann (1681-1767). In additionto many concerti for solo instruments and orchestra, he also composed four concer-tos for four solo violins playing together with no orchestra. In the in D Major Concertomotifs pass easily between the violinists, with none more important than the others; infact, often the third and fourth violins play above the first and second violins.
