Leaders Salate NAACP In his message to the NAACP conference, Lester B. Granger, ex- ecutive director, National Urban League said: “Looking to the years ahead after the 50th anniversaries of both the NAACP and the National Urban League, we in the Urban League see greater need than ever for an intense application of our twin programs ... May your 51st year be an auspicious beginning for the new job ahead. The nation needs a sound- ly-led and firmly-supported NAACP program as npver before.” George Meany, president, AFL- CIO: “We share your objectives. We are fully committed to them as you are and we are constantly pressing for their fulfillment in the laggard areas of the labor movement as well as in the nation as a whole. While we are proud of the accomplishments of the trade union movement to date, we are cognizant that much remains to be done within our own house, and, as we have made quite clear, we intend to do that job. “We share as well common enemies. It is no mere coincidence that the last anti-Negro stronghold in America is likewise the last anti-union stronghold. Those who oppose you, oppose us. In so doing, they oppose all that is good for America. “But the goal we share with you is not so close to achievement as to permit the luxury of differences in. tactics developing into recriminations. We are both entitled, on the basis of our individual organizational records, to confidence in the other’s good faith.” Other famous persons who sent messages to the conference were: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., presi- dent, Southern Christian Leadership Conference; William O. Walker, presi- dent of the National Newspaper Pub- lishers Association and publisher of the Cleveland Call and Post; Adlai E. Stevenson; Walter Reuther, president, Prominent American Baha'i Dies HORACE HOLLEY, for 36 years secretary of the U. S. National Spirit- ual Assembly of Baha’is, died of a heart attack in Haifa, Israel, July 30s 1960. Recently Mr. Holley was ap- pointed as one of the Trustees of the Faith and left this country in Decem- ber of 1958, with his wife, Doris Holley, to take up his residence in Haifa, the World Center of the Faith. In addition to his many years of service as secretary of the U. S. Na- tional Spiritual Assembly, Mr. Holley has contributed much to the Baha’i literature of this country. His writings have been very helpful in explaining many vital principles having to do with the administration of the Faith in the United States. I was also impressed with the affair which was elaborate and in keeping with the event and the surroundings. Monday, 1 p.m. the Arizona dele- gation had its first caucus. After con- siderable discussion, the delegation was polled and this was the result: KENNEDY-24; JOHNSON-5; SYM- INGTON-2; STEVENSON-1. Two members did not vote. My vote was for Kennedy. Later that day I met the Kennedy family. With Ted Kennedy it was a renewal of acquaintance. Monday at 5 p.m. I attended the first convention session. This was something to behold and not to forget. It appeared to be the greatest show on earth. During that session I think I walked 25 miles meeting and talking with delegates from all the states. Michigan had the largest delegation of Negroes—26 in all. There were many Negro delegates from Illinois, Washington. D. C., Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Maryland, Texas, Oklahoma, California, Virginia, and the Virgin Islands. There were a total of 90 Ne- gro Delegates. In my humble opinion, the 1960 Democratic platform is- the best that they have ever adoped. It was a plat- form which made one feel fully Amer- ican—a first class citizen. I had a grand time meeting all the “VIPs” (very important persons) in the political arena. Friday morning Senators John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson met with all the Negro delegates. Senator Johnson assured us, and made the point very clear and Senator Kennedy joined him in this, that if they are elected they wilPsee to it that Negroes make more progress in the next 4 years than they have made in the last 50. To further drive home his point, relative to southerners who have helped the cause, he cited Hugo Black of Kentucky, Ex-senator Claude Pep- per of Florida and Governor Leroy Collins of Florida. This indeed was .an education along many lines. It was a privilege to have been a part of this important delibera- tion. There was, of course, minority opinion and it was expressed openly and at times forcefully. But the over- all majority opinion was what finally came out on top. I think we are in for some progressive years. THE ARIZONA SUN MORGAN'S GROCERY Groceries Beer Wine Notions Magazines 1830 SOUTH PARK TUCSON Distributor of THE ARIZONA SUN Page 6
