Analysis of Africa Shox: Creating a slide show: Areas you may wish to analyse

• Identify generic aspects of mise en scene. Link any aspect of mise-en-scene to a genre theory.

• Explain narrative structure and link to a media theory.

• Write about technical purpose of aspects of mise-en-scene: lighting, camera shots and angles.

• Representation of place: Negative or positive representation of New York – dystopia which links to the sci fireferences (protagonist is a zombie)! Representation of ethnicity.

• Linked to genre – visual signifiers that indicate the roots of dub step/hip hop, electronica: Think about thetitle of the track, roots of genre (Africa, slavery, young black kids in New York creating their own style),zombie a metaphor for slavery (the slaves would have arrived in shock, blinded by the light etc), significanceof the dog tag

• Audience –niche why? Underground nature of the genre is represented by the sequences in the

underground car park

• Theme – colonisation of black music by white artists – reference white dancers in car park.

• Intertextuality – Identify and explain any aspect that reminds you of another text.

• References to popular culture and consumerism: Star bucks – to an educated contemporaryaudience they know this company don’t pay their taxes. Star Bucks have colonised our high streets. –

thus this reference could b e read as critical because Star Bucks are driving independent tax payingcoffee shops off the high street. Think about conventions of electronica, dub step reggae, hip hop

• Identify key features of this music video that transport audiences out of their comfort zone

• The big question: How does the music video challenge audience’s perception of hip hop? How doesthe music video represent New York.
