    In 30hrs, you have to learn the basics of VFR and IFRaircraft handling, IFR procedures and approaches.

    With only the Basic Flying Course as previous experience.We will continue the training where the BFC stopped andbuild up from whatyouve learned so far.

    IFR training is VERY DEMANDING. Even for the mostskillful student, it is a lot of hard work to meet the

    standards. Dontthink that the flight training will be easy.

    This briefing is not to de-motivate you! It is meant toencourage you and to help you to study and preparecorrectly for your missions.

    If you do well, you will have the maximum benefits from yourtraining.

    Your efforts will pay off during the rest of the training.

    We know that in the mean timeyoure working hard for the

    ATP theory course. However consider the sim training asbeing equally important to the theoretical training.

    We dont have time in the sim to explain the verybasics or what is clearly explained in the book.

    Be well prepared, than your instructor will be able to teachyou as much as possible and make you a fine pilot!

    Prepare your missions well in advance

    Dont just read your manual, study, understand andchair fly!

    Learning has 4 levels:

    Root knowledge study by heart

    Understanding

    Application ability to apply

    Correlation

    Application is the minimum level you should achieve

    before showing up for the mission.

    You can reach the level of application by firstunderstanding what is in the manual, and afterwards dochairflying (see further in this briefing).

    During the (de-)briefing, we do not want to hear questions

    on the level of root knowledge. It is not the Instructorstask to go through the manual with the student (root

    learning and understanding).

    For 80% of your questions, you will find an answer in youmanuals! So please, first try to find an answer in the book.

    However, if something is unclear, dont hesitate. Ask thequestion.

    Dontwait until the evening before the session to have aquick look into your manual.

    Study well in advance: if you dont understand certainparts, you still have some time left to ask the instructorwell before the actual mission.

    Most of the IFR procedures (interceptions, holdings)require more than just a quick home study. You need many

    hours to understand and especially learn to apply theseprocedures(chairflying).

    Last minute changes in the schedule are possible, dontwait with preparing a mission until it is scheduled!

    Let us useinterceptionsas an example.

    You can read the chapter interceptions in the IFR manual.You will learn the basic rules by heart (root knowledge). Ifyou read it well, you will understand everything. But thatdoesntmean you will be able to apply it yet.

    For this, you need to draw the RMI visualization of the

    different possibilities of interceptions on paper. Later, youcan practice this on PC flight simulator. You have to makethese drawings many times (each case at least 20 times)until it goes really fast. This is called chair flying.

    The day you will perform interceptions for the first time inthe FNPTII, you will already be able to apply it pretty well.

    Your instructor can then get you up to a much higher level ofapplication and focus on the more advanced exercises.

    Another example of chair flying is learning the flows andchecklists at home. More about that later when talking about

    the normal procedures.

    How to prepare for a mission

    During the training, you will encounter your limitationsconcerning multitasking and saturation (compare to theinternal memory of a computer)

    The saturation level is something you cant change, but by

    chairflyingat home, you can increase your pilot ability!

    The time you need for every individual task will decrease ifyou practice it bychairflying. In the end you will be able to

    do multiple and more difficult tasks simultaneously whileflying (multi tasking).

    (i.e. fly the aircraft in turbulent conditions,turn in the holding and prepare an approachat the same time).

    Start studying well in advance before the actual mission. Ex. Interceptions at M8, start to study this 1 week in

    advance at the latest!

    III-23 Mission details

    For every mission, check homework topics and airexercises. Study this in detail (IFR/VFR manual includingbulletins, QRH, BFC, PPH, review long briefings!). Chairfly special patterns at home (example the vertical Sfigures).

    This is the absolute minimum to study for the mission.

    More details about the QRH and G1000 knowledge seelater in the briefing.

    Review the topics from previous missions if required.

    The completion standards give you a good idea of the levelyou should have by the end of the mission.

    Prepare your initial Com/Nav setup (check and study thedeparture clearance).

    Make sure you have the necessary (IFR) charts, airportcharts with you.

    You received or will receive a folder from the studentadministrator with the charts for the US and Belgium.

    Prepare yourself in a professional way like an airline pilot.

    For the first 20 missions:

    Pitch power table: no single eng. settings or flapless

    pattern. Maneuvers: speeds, go-around.

    Patterns: normal pattern, all 2 engine IFR approaches.

    The flows and CL will initially be your main study task, youcan expect it to take many evenings to study them!

    By mission 1, understand all flows, CL. Basics of execution.

    By mission 2: you must be able to execute all flows and CL.Mistakes and slow pace is acceptable.

    By mission 3: few mistakes should can be made and theflows (and in flight CL) should be done at a good speed.

    After mission 3: Fully up to standard. No mistakes, highspeed. You should not be thinking about the items, it mustgo automatic.

    How can you best study this? = CHAIR FLY!

    Put a picture (full scale) of the complete cockpit against yourwall. Take a seat and sit in front of this picture.

    Go through the flight, do all flows and Checklists out loud.Make the hand movements. Do this over and over again.

    Create a disturbance while practicing (to simulate enginenoise, ATC). Example: very loud music in your room.

    During any moment of the day, let your little sister or brother

    question you (i.e. ask for a CL, the speeds of a pattern)You must be able to answer immediately!

    If you can only do it slowly at home, you wont be able to do

    it in flight!

    Be there 45 min in advance; the FI will be there at the latest30 min in advance.

    For M20, be there 1hr in advance. If you are scheduled with 2

    students for M20, be there together 1hr before the first M20.However, the missions will be flown separately.

    FNPT II Briefing room is in front of the B-737/200 FFS.

    The FI will review the briefing topics of the mission and

    check your preparation and home study. Present your training records to the FI (FTD phase and extra

    training record).

    PF: have your kneeboard with you

    Prepare your kneeboard in advance:

    Ball pen and paper to make notes, copy the ATIS,

    Airport chart, approach charts, SID, ...

    PM: Backseating = free training!

    Pay attention, think like you would be flying yourself.

    Make notes for the PF, after the flight you can pass yournotes to each other. The FI will not repeat everythingduring the debriefing.

    Complete logbook and flight report. Present it to your FI, sothat he can sign it. Logbook in column 11 under type: BFNPTII-007 and in column 12 write the mission number e.g.M5.

    Give your training record to the FI. He has to complete this.

    It is your responsibility that your training records andlogbook are up to date!

    The FI will review the exercises. Make notes! After the

    session update your PPH! Time to ask questions about the mission

    Good moment to ask questions about the next mission.
