2 PURPLE PATCHES

In the recent school holidays, Liesel Dunstan and myself travelled to New York and were fortunate enough to visit a fellow Edmund Rice school, All Hallows High School. All Hallows is situated in South Bronx, a short walk from Yankee Stadium and caters for 800-plus young men, mainly of African-American or Latin American descent.

The school is true to the Edmund Rice value of education for all and caters to students from a vast range of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. However, the school does have strict policies in place for lateness, truancy, non-submission of assignments, uniform and behavior. This is all done in a nurturing and safe environment and through consultation with parents and students. All Hallows focuses on educating the student through contemporary means and empowers the students to be proactive in their learning. The school boasts a great multimedia room, equip with a green screen, cameras and looks like something more

akin to a newsroom. Media students use this to create, edit and present videos or news reports to the school community.

Liesel and I were extremely fortunate to be shown around by Bernie Ramirez, an old-scholar who now works back at the school as Director of Development and Recruiting. Bernie showed great passion and pride in the school and is keen to continue to foster strong links between CBC and All Hallows. We also met school principal Sean Sullivan and school president Ronald Schutte who took time out of their holiday’s to meet us and say hello.

If you are ever in New York, I urge you to contact Bernie and organise a tour of All Hallows, as it further reiterates that the values of the Edmund Rice Education charter are being lived in the same manner in a country on the other side of the world.

Congratulations!

Tristan Tomlins

Year 11 student, Tristan (above) who was presented with the South Australian State St John Cadet of the Year Award. Tristan competed in a practical and theory examination as well as an interview with senior St John’s representatives. Tristan was congratulated by St John CEO Michael Cornish at the award ceremony. Well done Tristan.

William Holmes

Primary school students aged 10 to 13 years were trialled and selected in a district representative team to compete at the State Cross Country Championships this year at Oakbank. From here, a team was selected to represent South Australia at the National Championships held in Hobart, Tasmania on Friday 11 to Monday 14 August.

CBC would love to recognise and congratulate the efforts of William Holmes, (Year 6) on his accomplishments at the Cross Country National Championships. William managed to place 4th overall in the individual 3km event, 1st in the U11 5 x 1.5km Relay and 2nd in the U11 first team across the line.

Well done William!

The CBC community was privileged to welcome George Heading (National Finalist, Australia’s Local Hero 2017) and Old Scholar Paul Vasileff (2017 Young Australian of the Year) at a special assembly where they shared their stories.

BASKETBALL

Open A BasketballCBC 49 defeated Pulteney Grammar 48

CBC played as a team and that got us over the line with narrowest of margins. This was perhaps our most challenging game to date and full compliments to PGS for their tenacity and sportsmanship. In the overall scheme of things, they won the first and third and CBC took over in the second and fourth. I ask myself the question: what made that one point difference? Team supporting each other on and off the bench, critical intercepts/denials of opposition passes, communication during the game, increased defensive pressure in the third and fourth, and sheer tenacity. One of the things that really impressed me was the combination play between players. This was never going to be an easy game as PGS and CBC were both top of their respective pools. This is all leading to the Intercollegiate game against Blackfriars Priory School and we need to maintain this in the next two weeks. The team showed great character.

Jaidzems impressed with good drives to draw the foul. He also had some good steals and made excellent position off an M Machar rebound for a pass to score. Dalwood had an incredible game. His intercepts of the ball and intensive pressure in addition to rebounds was a game changer as was the fight for the loose ball. Geisler and Dalwood were a good combination. He played excellent defence as he applied enormous pressure on the opposition ball handlers. Great work at both ends with presenting scoring and passing options.

M Machar hit 17 points and was instrumental in rebounds and ensuring that we kept in touch with threes. At critical points in the game, he stepped up to keep us within striking distance at all times. He was always heavily tagged by the opposition. Tavian was brilliant under the basket and directing defence. His positioning was excellent to score, as was his positional man-up in defence. Daniele also set the tempo for the game and in my opinion played a captain’s game. His attacking drives drew some opposition fouls and were converted. His intense defensive efforts gained us some breathing space notwithstanding scrambling for the loose ball.

A Machar combined aggression to the basket as well as contributing valuable threes on the scoreboard. He was a versatile player in this game with rebounds and close defensive tagging. Navarro was impressive with his speed to drop back in defence on an opposition fast break. He also made good position under the basket to hit five points in addition to his impressive defensive pressure on his man. The Tavian –Navarro combination is starting to look good from our perspective.

Thank you to our parents who were superb in their support. I could hear them across the court!

Best: Oliver Dalwood, Malith Machar, Sam Daniele, Akok Machar.

Next Week: At Westminster College at 8.30am for the divisional Semi-finals and possible Grand Final. Be there early please.

Important notice: The Intercollegiate game against BPS is on Thursday 24 August at 4.00pm at CBC.

Middle B BasketballCBC 45 defeated Pulteney Grammar 15

Another great win by the Middle Bs this weekend. At first look, the opposition had some very tall boys that towered over our smaller players and would give some of our taller players some grief. I was incorrect in my assumption. CBC had the jump and agility that Pulteney were not able to contend with.

CBC played as a team and held back the opposition in our scoring half, not allowing Pulteney to progress down to their scoring end. Our smaller players were too fast and many ball steals and turnovers were created that

only enhanced our winning score.

Our boys played with heart and sportsmanship along with great teamwork, backing up each other. It was fantastic to watch, especially Harrison who was on fire during the last half, with his speed and agility that rattled the opposition.

Thank you to all parents who support the boys by getting them to the matches and cheering them on. Also a big thank you to Mrs Iommazzo for scoring during the game.

DEBATING YES! NO!

Junior DebatingCBC (affirmative) vs Loreto College CBC won by 2 points

Round 3 of our debate topic was that ‘we should introduce a tax on sugar’. CBC hosted the debates on Wednesday 9 August. Our first speaker Jake Kollarackal introduced the topic as the affirmative and did an excellent job of defining that the tax should be applied to processed sugar not natural sugars. He talked about the impact obesity and how a tax would alleviate the problem. Our second speaker Jonathan Sawers spoke about how a tax would raise revenue for the government instead of generating profits for multinational companies. Our third speaker Ethan David did a great job of rebutting the negative team. The boys certainly improved on their rebuttal and public speaking manner by using light and shade in their speeches. Thank you to Harrison Lowman, Lachlan Hancock and Paul Mazzone for chairing and time keeping for the debates. Well done on another great debate!

FOOTBALL

First XVIII FootballTrinity College 23.9 (147) defeated CBC 13.11 (89)

Best Players: Danielle 7, Martin Frederick, Michael Frederick, Harrison Webb, Marcus Costanzo

Christian Brothers College First XVIII was defeated in a tough contest against a very talented Trinity College football side. CBC started the game off with a lack of energy and commitment to playing team football. Second to the ball and poor skill execution allowed Trinity to kick four unanswered goals in the opening 10 minutes. CBC were able to slowly work their way back into the game with playing a decent patch of fast, aggressive football.

The second quarter saw an even battle, with CBC being able to apply greater pressure for longer periods. Danielle was outstanding with his speed and acceleration around the ground, finishing in front of goal as well. Both Martin and Michael Frederick were able to find space and continue to drive us forward with fast paced football. Harrison Webb was dangerous in the

forward 50, finishing with two goals at the end of the game. As a team we didn’t have the confidence to take the game on and play our normal fast game style. Trinity were able to defend our attack, as we weren’t proactive with our movement going forward. Countless occasions we did high, long kicking to Trinity’s tall men. This resulted in us being killed on transition.

The Second Half we battled bravely and continued to apply pressure to the opposition. Trinity were able to continuously break through our team defence, with their full forward dominating. Marcus Costanzo did an excellent job and played his role in winning this battle in the second half. Danielle continued to dominate, finishing with five goals from the midfield.

Too many players were passengers on the weekend. The boys struggled to have an impact on the game after a very poor start. Our best is very good, but we have to bring effort every week to get the victory. We are a no excuses football team, Trinity played better football for longer periods. As a team we learn from this and look forward to the great challenge against St Ignatius at home this weekend.

We are building to Intercol!

Mr Riley AtkinsonCoach

Year 3 Div 2 FootballSt John’s 11.2 (68) defeated CBC 4.7 (31)

Although the weather was sunny, the wind was brisk. Despite the cold air the boys played well this morning. However, it was not to be a winning game this week. St John’s challenged on all fronts, with their passing, marking and kicking skills surpassing those of our boys.

CBC, ably led by their captain this week, Jayden Warry, showed evidence of good handballing early in the game and this continued throughout each quarter, but despite this, the opposition continued to put the ball through the goal posts, where it counts in this game!

There were good contests for the ball throughout the game. Cameron Richter ran away with the ball from the centre line. Will Axon shining with a confident goal through the centre when he was awarded a free kick in the forward line. Oliver Dalton gained possession and passed onto Pablo who scored a goal, showing a positive result of a good combination of teamwork and passing the ball well. Mitchell scored a goal after a significant amount of weaving amongst the players in front of goal. Jayden and Austin Wilks were on fire throughout this game and showed their true determination despite the fading score line.

Best on field this week were Jayden, Jordan, Pablo, Oliver Ryan and Mitchell. We farewell our team player Jordan Tongerie and wish him all the best for the future as he moves to a new school next week.

Many thanks to Shane Tongerie for his support of the team this season.

We will miss his compassion, knowledge, passion and drive.

Thanks to Aaron Medson, our coach, for continuing to develop a growing skill set and sense of teamwork in the players. To the parents and other spectators who show their steadfast support we thank you.

RUGBY

Brothers U16 RugbyBrothers 74 defeated St Peter’s College 29

Best Players: Michael Kittel-Neil, Leonard, Brandon Minazo, Josh Rahaley

Brothers at home at Burnside RUFC played against a strong St Peters side. St Peters numbered 14 players, Brothers had 15. We didn’t have to, but we decided to match numbers to make it an even contest in the spirit of rugby. St Peters dominated early play with strong tackling, but did not have the stamina to last out the first half. The Brothers side played to our strengths which

Page 4: gaa pnaap Christian Brothers College Newsletter...CBC (affirmative) vs Loreto College CBC won by 2 points Round 3 of our debate topic was that ‘we should introduce a tax on sugar’

is speed, agility, ball handling skills, scrumming and the ability to step past the opposition at pace. When we played our game we were unbeatable. Beau and Banksy made some terrific runs, and the Captain Josh Rahaley was dominant in every aspect of the game.

This victory makes it 9 in a row for us, finishing the minor premiership rounds this season undefeated and top of the ladder. We have the Grand Final next week, with home ground advantage, against Sacred Heart College who finished second on the ladder.

SOCCER

Open A SoccerSt Michael’s 6 defeated CBC 1

Best Players: Adrian Cochrane, Ricky Francesca, Jake Oliviero

Goal Scorer: Alex Stefanopoulos

A hard fought game by both teams -- unfortunately SMC fought harder. The score line does not reflect the actual nature of the game. Yes St Michael’s were the better team on the day but CBC acquitted themselves with pride. An unfortunate outcome of this loss is that it put us out of finals contention. Therefore,we now focus all our energies on the Intercol and reclaiming the Ray Coster Cup. There are no excuses for the loss; we had two questionable penalties go against us but the other four goals were decent efforts. Our goal came off the boot of Alex Stefanopoulos, a dynamite bullet from the penalty spot, so I guess a fairer score line may have been 4–1. We have PAC next, then Blacks in the Intercol. We need to finish on a high with two final wins for the 2017 season, and to send off some exceptional Year 12 lads.

TABLE TENNIS

Open Table TennisCBC defeated Rostrevor

Well, after two days at the Monastery at Glen Osmond attending the Mt Sinai workshop for longer serving staff, I was ready for anything. On the drive back to the city centre I was narrowing the gap between the sacred and secular worlds and I arrived in plenty of time for discernment. Last time we met, our scratch team was defeated in the poorly lit Hamilton Hall in the scenic hills of Morialta. At the time we considered launching a protest about poor light, home town advantage and, given half the Rostrevor team wore Ray Bans and costumes left over from a casual day, we decided to bite our collective lips. Gonski 2.0 and the funding of light bulbs was still on the table. And at the end of the day it was really none of our business where the money went.

This time we won well with players over. Maybe it was ‘dumb boy glory’ in the lead up to Intercol in a couple of weeks. Maybe it was the realisation that to lose once in two seasons was a loss too many. Whatever the reason, we were out in an hour, the floor swept and the gym left neat as a pin.

And the lost tie from last week? Well it was found on the bus back at Ifould Street and returned to the student the following Monday morning. The world was righted and a mother’s wrath pacified.

We considered the burning bush and the flame never going out as we wheeled our bicycles down Frome Road into the fading light.

Mr Rory HarrisCoach

Open B Table TennisCBC 13 defeated St Paul’s College 7

With the form slump that came on either side of the break now a distant memory, the CBC Open B Table Tennis boys continued their charge towards Intercol, easily accounting for St Paul’s B Team last Friday. The win may have been convincing in the end but it looked shaky early on with the boys only winning one of the four doubles matches and being down 5–1 overall at one stage. From here though the tables started to turn and the wins came in steady fashion. The squad won five out of eight singles matches, and then squared up the ledger and overtook St Paul’s in the reverse singles, only dropping one of these matches. Joseph Tripodi and Dominic Zampogna led from the from as 1st and 2nd and didn’t drop a set all game. Lachlan Elliott and Anthony Boffo provided good support in the 3rd and 4th positions respectively, winning all their singles games. This week students take on PAC’s A side in the final game of the regular season before Intercol in Week 5. Please note that due to the clash with Football the Intercol game has been moved to Tuesday afternoon in Week 5.

Mr Shane MeeganCoach

Middle B1 Table TennisCBC 18 defeated St Ignatius 2

The B1 and B2 teams boarded the luxury coach to once again head to the leafy foothill of Rostrevor. The B2 team was deposited at Rostrevor while we went on to fight the same foe we defeated last week, St Ignatius. Even though we only had seven players, the boys were confident that they would put up a good fight. Chanting ‘once more to the breach…’ we entered the St Ignatius gym.

It soon became apparent that we would win this competition easily as CBC won set after set. In the end we had won all but two of the sets.

Filled with elation, we boarded the luxury coach to collect the B2 team and head home for a well-deserved victory celebration.
