DawkinsalsoearnedUCFitsfirstat-largeberthtotheNCAA Tournament in 2018-19. The Knights were a nine seedinthetourney,theirhighestseedinfiveNCAATournamentappearances,anddefeatedeighthseededVCU,73-58infirst-roundaction.

The Knights were stellar down the stretch to secure their at-large NCAA Tournament berth winning on the road at No. 6/8 Houston to snap the Cougars’ 33-game home win streak, and thentoppingNo.19/20CincinnatiinOrlandoonSeniorKnight.ItmarkedthefirsttimeUCFhadearnedmultiplevictoriesoverrankedopponentsinthesameseason,andtheKnightsdid it in back-to-back games.
UCFfinishedtheyear24-9,tiedforthefourthmostwinsinasingleseasoninprogramhistory. The Knights’ 23 regular season wins marked a new record in UCF’s Division I era. Theteamwent13-5inAmericanAthleticConferenceplay,theteam’smostleaguewinssincejoiningTheAmerican,andearnedthefourseedintheconferencetournamentforthesecondtimeinthreeseasons.
KnownfortheirdefenseunderDawkins,theKnightsranked11thinthenationindefensivefieldgoalpercentage,holdingopponentstojust39.4percentfromthefloorin2018-19.UCFwasalso27thinscoringdefense,allowing64.5pointspergame.
UCFcrackedtheAssociatedPressTop25Pollforthefirsttimesince2011,earningarankingof25thlateintheregularseason.ItwasthelatestintoaseasonthattheKnightshaveeverbeenranked.ThehomefinaleagainstCincinnatimarkedthefirstmatchupofrankedteamsatAdditionFinancialArena.
DawkinsledUCFbacktotheNCAATournamentforthefirsttimesince2005,andthefirsttimeasanat-largeselection.ThepreviousfourNCAATournamentswereaschampionsoftheAtlanticSunConferenceTournamentin1994,1996,2004and2005.
Hehelpedthreeindividualsearnall-conferenceaccoladesfromTheAmericanin2018-19,asUCFledtheleaguewiththreehonorees.B.J.TaylorbecamethefirstKnighttoearnfirstteamhonorsfromTheAmerican,whileAubreyDawkinswasnamedsecondteamandTackoFalladded third team honors.

In three years, Johnny Dawkins has led UCF to new heights on the basketball court, but he hasdoneanevenbetterjobwithhisplayersintheclassroom.WithDawkinsatthehelm,theKnightsmen’sbasketballprogramrecordedanaveragesemesterteamGPAover3.0forthefirsttimeinrecordedhistory.Theythendiditagain,settinganewprogramrecordwithanaveragesemesterGPAof3.03lastspring.
DawkinstookoveratUCFaftertheKnightshadgone12-18andhadn’tfinishedabove.500since2012-13.HeledtheBlackandGoldtoa24-12recordinhisfirstseasonatthehelm,thesixthbestturnaroundinthenation.Withjustsevenscholarshipplayersduetotransfersandinjuries,theKnightsearnedthefourthseed–theirhighestever–intheAmericanAthleticConferenceTournament,eventuallyfallingtoleaguechampionSMUinthesemifinals.
Itwasaseasonfulloffirstsin2016-17,asUCFhosteditsfirstNITgame,defeatingColoradofortheprogram’sfirstwininanNITorNCAATournamentgame.TheKnightswentontodefeattopseededIllinoisStateontheroad,beforecominghometothefirstsell-outcrowdatAdditionFinancialArenaandwinning68-58overIllinoistoearnaspotintheNITFinalFour.
UnderDawkins’leadership,UCFledallNCAADivisionIteamsindefensivefieldgoalpercentagein2016-17,holdingopponentstojust36.5percentfromthefloor.TheKnightswerealsosixthinthenation,allowingonly61.2pointspergame,andgaveup45orlesspointsinfourgamesoverthecourseoftheyear.DawkinswasnamedafinalistforboththeJimPhelanandBenJobeNationalCoachoftheYearawardshisfirstseasonatUCF.
