CATEGORICAL WON-LOST-TIED HEAD COACH CALEB PORTERHead coach Caleb Porter guided the Portland Timbers on a record-setting, turna-round season in 2013, his first season in MLS and as the club’s head coach. He was announced as the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joined the club ahead of the 2013 MLS campaign. Porter received the Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year at the Oregon Sports Awards on March 9, 2014, becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the award since it was founded in 1957.

Porter was named the 2013 MLS Coach of the Year after leading Portland to a 14-5-15 (57pts) record, finishing the regular season in first place in the Western Conference and with the third-best record in the league – just two points shy of MLS Supporters’ Shield-winners New York Red Bulls. In 2013, the Timbers set new single-season club marks in points, wins, goals (54), goal differential (+21), shutouts (15) and fewest goals allowed (33).

Under Porter, the Timbers assembled one of the biggest turnaround seasons in MLS history in 2013. In comparison to Portland’s 2012 totals, the Timbers assembled a 23-point improvement in points and an MLS-record 43-goal improvement in goal differential. Portland’s five losses during the 2013 regular season are tied for the fewest in MLS history in a 34-game season. In 2013, the Timbers ranked third in MLS in goals scored and conceded the second-fewest goals at 33, giving the club a league-best, plus-21 goal differential. The club also led the league with 15 shutouts, tied for third-most in a single season in MLS history. During the regular season, the Timbers assembled one of the longest unbeaten streaks in MLS history at 15 games.

The Timbers recorded a 15-game, home unbeaten streak during the 2013 regular season, posting a league-best 11-1-5 home record at Providence Park. The club also set an MLS single-season record with 11 home shutouts. Among Porter’s achievements during the 2013 season, the club’s 57 points accrued are the most earned by a first-year head coach in MLS since the league’s inaugural season in 1996. Porter’s winning percentage (.632) in 2013 ranked among the best in league history for first-year MLS head coaches, and the Timbers’ 15-game unbeaten streak is the longest by an MLS head coach in his first full season at the helm.

Under Porter in 2013, Portland qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since joining the league in 2011. By defeating rival Seattle Sounders FC in the Western Conference Semifinal, the Tim-bers became just the fifth club in MLS history to reach the conference championship in their MLS Cup Playoff debut, and the first since Real Salt Lake in 2008. Additionally, the Timbers made their deepest run in club history in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2013 under Porter’s guidance, reaching the semi-finals of the tournament.

Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron from 2006-12. He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 at Akron and owned the highest winning percentage (.832) among all active Division I coaches. Porter garnered numerous honors while at Akron, including 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year.

From Kalamazoo, Mich., Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010, and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. In all, he guided Akron to seven Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular-season championships, five MAC tournament titles and five consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament’s Round of 16 (2008-12). Porter set multiple NCAA records while at Akron, including a 48-match, home unbeaten streak (44-0-4) from 2008-11 and a 47-match unbeaten streak (44-0-3) in conference play from 2006-12.

Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and he spent three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team from 2009-11. Prior to joining Akron, Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University.

As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his professional playing career in 2000. Porter also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games.

He had a successful collegiate playing career at Indiana, where he was a three-year captain and a three-time All-Big Ten honoree. Porter led the Hoosiers to four conference titles, and four NCAA tourna-ment appearances. As a senior, Porter captained IU to 23 consecutive wins before losing to eventual national champion UCLA in the national semifinals and was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy.

PORTLAND TIMBERS AT SPORTING KANSAS CITYTUESDAY, JUNE 24, 2014

ABOUT THE U.S. OPEN CUP

The 101st edition of the tournament features 80 teams, an increase from the then-record 68 that took the field last year. The expansion results in both the largest number of amateur teams (42) in the tournament proper, exceeding the previous record of 34 set last year, as well as the largest contingent of pro clubs (38, surpassing last year’s record of 34), with all Division I, II and III professional sides participating for the third consecutive year. An additional record for the competition saw 24 second-round matches played, exceeding the previous high of 18 in a single round (2013 first round).

A new feature will be the prospect that many pro teams will have to play an early-round Open Cup match on a weekend date (a first in the competition’s modern era). This scheduling opportunity for fourth-round games June 14-15 is the result of a league break Division I (Major League Soccer) and II (North Ameri-can Soccer League) clubs will take during the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, recognized as U.S. Soccer’s national club cham-pionship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. The tournament has crowned a champion for 100 consecutive years dating back to 1914. This year’s winner will earn $250,000 and have its name engraved on the historic Dewar Challenge Trophy, one of the oldest nationally contested trophies in American team sports. The runner-up will take home $60,000, while the team that advances the furthest from each lower division will earn a $15,000 cash prize. D.C. United is the defending U.S. Open Cup champion, having won its third tournament title (fol-lowing triumphs in 1996 and 2008) after a tense 1-0 road victory over Real Salt Lake on Oct. 1, 2013. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor American soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.

During the 2014 regular-season schedule, Sporting Kansas City has compiled a 6-5-4 (22pts) record, including a mark of 3-1-4 at Sporting Park. MULTI-GOAL GAMESPortland has recorded six straight multi-goal games in regular-season play. The six-game stretch is the longest with multiple goals in a game by the Timbers in the club’s four MLS seasons. Previously, Portland recorded multiple goals in four straight games (May 12–June 8, 2013).

HITTING THE WOODWORK

The Timbers lead the league with 12 shots that have hit the frame this season. Toronto FC and Seattle have hit the woodwork eight times, which ranks second in the league.

SQUAD DEPTHDisplaying good depth in the squad, the Timbers have seen 22 players earn a start, while 26 players have earned playing time in all competitions this season, including regular-season play and the U.S. Open Cup.

AMONG LEAGUE LEADERSThe Timbers rank among the top teams in MLS in several offensive categories. Portland is tied for second in goals (28) and ranks tied for third overall in assists (21), while the squad has attempted the second-most shots on goal this season (82). The Timbers are the second-most fouled team in MLS through the first 16 games, suffering 258 fouls.

ASSIST LEADERMidfielder Diego Valeri holds the league lead with eight assists, including four in the last three matches. The playmaking midfielder, who finished as the league-leader in assists (13) last season while winning MLS Newcomer of the Year honors, has tallied at least one point in six of the team’s last eight regular-season matches. Valeri’s three assists against Vancouver on June 1 tied the Timbers MLS single-game record for assists in a match.

SCORING PACE

Portland’s 28 goals this season are tied for second-most goals in the league. The Timbers are currently on pace for 59 goals this season, which would be five more goals scored that during the record-setting 2013 season. Portland is averaging a goal every 51.43 minutes, third-best rate in the league.

BACK-TO-BACK MATCHESThe Timbers face Sporting Kansas City twice in a four-day span starting Tuesday. After squaring off against Sporting KC in the U.S. Open Cup at Sporting Park on Tuesday night, the Timbers play host to the Eastern Conference club in the Rose City in regular-season action on Friday night. Only one previous time have the Timbers faced the same opponent in back-to-back U.S. Open Cup and regular-season matches across all eras. In 2006, the second-division Timbers took on the Charleston Battery in the third round of the Open Cup on July 12, 2006, in Charleston, S.C. before playing the Battery again two days later in USL First Division league play, also in Charleston.
