HEAD COACH CALEB PORTERHead coach Caleb Porter enters his fifth season with the Timbers in 2017. Since joining the club for the 2013 season, Porter has compiled one of the league’s top winning percentages among active coaches with a record of 56-39-44, while leading the Timbers to their first MLS Cup title in 2015, two Western Conference Championship appearances and double-digit victory totals in each of his first four seasons. During his tenure, the Timbers have qualified for CONCACAF Champions League twice (2014-15, 2016-17), finished in the top three in the Western Conference twice and made their deepest run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, reaching the semifinals in 2013. Porter coached in his 100th game as an MLS coach against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 14, 2015, posting a record of 39-25-36 in those games, which tied Dominic Kinnear for the fewest losses (25) in MLS history in a coach’s first 100 career games. In addition, his .570 winning percentage during that span ranked fourth among then-active coaches through their first 100 games, behind the Bruce Arena (62-37-1, .625), Sigi Schmid (52-33-15, .595) and Kinnear (40-25-35, .575). Ending the 2015 campaign with a nine-game unbeaten run across all competitions, the Timbers lifted their first MLS Cup trophy with a 2-1 win over Columbus Crew SC on Dec. 6, 2015. Portland finished the regular season with an MLS-club-record 15 wins, while also tying for the league lead in shutouts (13). On the road, the Timbers finished the 2015 season tied for the most road wins (7) in the league. Porter, who led the Timbers to a club-record 12 home victories in 2016, is a two-time recipient of the Oregon Sports Awards’ Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year (2013, 2015), becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the honor since it was founded in 1957. On Aug. 6, 2014, Porter helped guide the MLS All-Stars to a 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at Providence Park. In his first season with the club, Porter was named the 2013 MLS Coach of the Year after assembling one of the biggest turnaround seasons in league history, guiding the Timbers to a 23-point improve-ment and a plus-43 goal-differential increase over the previous season. The 2013 club finished atop the Western Conference to secure its first MLS playoff berth and posted a league-best 15 shutouts, includ-ing a league-record 11 clean sheets at home. Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter, who holds a U.S. Soccer Federation “A” license, was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron (2006-12). He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 and was named 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year. Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances (2009, 2010) and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team (2009-11). Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University, winning two national championships with the Hoosiers. Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin (8) and Jake (6), and a daughter, Stella (5).

  • PORTLAND TIMBERS VS COLUMBUS CREW SCSATURDAY, MARCH 25, 2017

QUOTESPortland Timbers head coach Caleb PorterOn the team’s performance in the second half...“I think it shows the heart they have. The hunger they have. The fight they have. And it’s every single player on the pitch. Every single player. Obviously there are certain guys who fight because it’s in their DNA, but you need fight out of guys like [Sebastián] Blanco and guys like Darlington [Nagbe] and [Diego] Valeri. I was really proud of the entire team, but I was really proud in the second half with those three guys in particular because it’s not always natural for those guys to want to dig and fight and grind and battle. I thought the whole team did that, but we got it out of everybody and that was the main reason we were on the ball so much because we kept winning it back with our pressure and I thought we just played with a real edge, a real ruthlessness that I’ve been wanting to see and we showed that. So I’m real pleased with obviously that second half and to be honest with you the entire game we were pretty good. The PK was tough, but we got one as well so that kind of washes out. But the only takeaway for me is we have to manage that one counter attack better, but outside of that I thought we were excellent the majority of the 90 minutes.”

Portland Timbers forward Fanendo AdiOn the come-from-behind victory…“It means a lot. Even though we were down 2-1 in the first half, but we talked at halftime about putting them under pressure and that’s exactly what we did. We pressed very high, and everyone put in a lot of work. It’s great to come back from 2-1 down to win the game 4-2.”

MATCH RECAPBehind three second-half goals, the Portland Timbers recorded their third win of the season with a 4-2 win against the Houston Dynamo at Providence Park on March 18. With the win, the Timbers are unbeaten in their first three league games, continuing the team’s strongest start to a season in the club’s MLS era.

Midfielder Diego Valeri recorded his second brace in three games played, while forward Fanendo Adi and midfielder David Guzmán each added a goal and an assist. Portland has scored 10 goals so far this season, marking the most goals scored through the first three games to start a season across all eras in club history (since 1975).

The Timbers (3-0-0, 9pts) scored just 11 minutes into the match when Valeri convert-ed from the penalty spot, blasting his effort down the middle after defender DeMarcus Beasley was called for a handball in the box.

Following the Timbers opening finish, Houston (2-1-0, 6pts) managed to score a pair of goals late in the first half, with forward Erick Torres scoring a penalty kick in the 38th minute, before forward Romell Quioto scored two minutes into stoppage time.

Attacking early in the second half, Portland found the equalizing goal when Valeri scored his second goal of the game in the 58th minute, tallying his fourth finish of the season. The goal took place after defender Zarek Valentin’s cross into the area found Valeri on the edge of the six-yard box, with the midfielder whipping a header into the far corner to bring the home side level.

With the finish, Valeri has scored the second-most goals in the league to start the season. Portland took the lead in the 66th minute when a clever pass from midfielder Darlington Nagbe resulted in Guzmán’s first goal for the Timbers. With two minutes remaining in the game, Portland extended its lead when Adi turned and fired from inside the 18-yard box, scoring his third goal of the season.
