20ste Kersuitgawe

20th Christmas edition

What a privilege to be able to wish our readers a blessed Christmas forthe 20th time and to look back on all the happenings of a year for the 20th

time in the existence of GAME & HUNT! From humble beginnings in 1994, this magazine has grown phenome-

nally with regard to quality, contents and scope – especially in 2014when we published an issue of 200 pages in August, which was a first. We are grateful for the blessings from Above and for the contribution ofdedicated colleagues as well as loyal readers and advertisers.

For 20 years we have been supporting the organised hunting, gameproducers and nature conservation organisations, and promoting theconcept of sustainable utilisation of our natural assets.

It has been a privilege to contribute to the dynamic growth of the gen-eral game industry, which has brought us to the stage where today thereare more than 15 million head of game on 21 million hectares of gameranches. The game numbers and area with regard to private gameranching total more than double that of all the national parks and provin-cial reserves combined. This is a great triumph for conservation!

Amidst speculation over the sustainability of rising prices for game, this year saw numerous new record prices. Looking at the total turnoverof game auctions, the R1 billion-mark for 2013 was exceeded and pre-liminary figures for 2014 indicate that this total has already been sur-passed in Limpopo Province alone.

We wish all our readers a truly blessed Christmas season.

“The Professional Hunters Association of

South Africa (Phasa) distances itself complete-

ly from the practices and actions of which

Dawie and Janneman Groenewald stand

accused. Dawie Groenewald was expelled from

our organisation eight years ago for bringing it

into disrepute,” said Adri Kitshoff, Phasa chief

executive.Phasa said it had noted the charges brought against

the Groenewalds in the USA for, among other things, selling and conducting illegal rhino hunts in South Africa, and pointed out that neither of the Groenewald brotherswas a member of its organisation.

Kitshoff noted, however, that certain media had incor-rectly quoted United States Fish and Wildlife Services(USFWS) director Dan Ashe as referring to rhinos asbeing critically endangered. “White rhino is listed as‘endangered’ by both the USFWS and the Conventionon International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites)and this distinction is important because it determines

annual hunting quotas, permitting rules andother legislativerequirements applica-ble to the hunting ofthat listed species.”

She said that boththe USFWS and CITESsupport the sustainableutilisation of naturalresources, including rhino. “Ashe is quoted as sayingthat South Africa has worked extraordinarily hard to pro-tect its wild rhino population, using trophy hunts as a keymanagement tool. These alleged illegal ‘hunts’ under-mine that work and the reputation of responsible hunterseverywhere.

“We thank the USFW for their continued recognition ofthe role sustainable hunting plays in conservation prac-tices across the world. We also thank them for the keyrole that they play in our conservation success story bybringing perpetrators to book.”
