SPORTING KANSAS CITY vs FC DALLAS SPORTING PARK, Kansas City, Kan.
March 15, 2014 (WEEK 2, MLS Game #12) 7:30 p.m. CT (KMCI-38; TWCSN-TX) The defending MLS champions make their league home bow for 2014 when Sporting Kansas City meet FC Dallas on Saturday evening at Sporting Park. SKC began defense of its title last weekend in a 1-0 loss at Seattle Sounders FC. FC Dallas started off their new season on a good note, knocking off the Montréal Impact 3-2 at home. This is the only league meeting between the teams this season. The teams met just once a year ago, a 2-2 draw in Frisco. When Sporting won 2-1 in 2012 in Kansas City in the
lone meeting that season, it was their first home win vs. FC Dallas since 2009. Sporting have come away with points on their last two trips to Frisco. Coaches record: Peter Vermes vs. SEA: P7 W3 L3 D1 … Oscar Pareja vs. KC: P2 W0 L1 D1
SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City didn’t see defense of their 2013 Major League Soccer title get off to the best start, Seattle Sounders scoring yet another late, late goal for a 1-0 win Saturday afternoon at CenturyLink Field. Sporting have 0 points from 1 match. LAST MATCH
The game's lone goal came well into stoppage. From a goalmouth scramble, Clint Dempsey put a header off the crossbar. The ball rebounded to Chad Barrett, who followed up another Dempsey shot and got just enough of it to put the ball in the back of the net. It was the fifth time in four years that Sounders FC have scored a late goal to beat Sporting KC.
Sporting manager Peter Vermes did not have any newcomers in his starting lineup for the league opener, but there were five changes from the team that started MLS Cup 2013 in December.
SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-1-2-3): Eric Kronberg - Kevin Ellis, Aurelien Collin, Matt Besler, Josh Gardner (Mechack Jerome 90) - Lawrence Olum - Graham Zusi, Benny Feilhaber (Ike Opara 90) - C.J. Sapong, Dom Dwyer, Jacob Peterson (Sal Zizzo 58).
TEAM NEWS For the fifth time in seven matches against Sounders FC, Sporting conceded the winning goal in stoppage-time.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak in season openers for SKC. “This is not an easy place to play being the first game of the season and their home opener. I thought we
played very well for 93 minutes and 43 seconds,” said SKC manager Peter Vermes. “We did a really good job on both sides. Defensively we were very disciplined. We had one lapse in our defensive shape overall, and that was in the last 17 seconds. It's unfortunate. We probably should've gotten a lot more coming out of this game because we had some really good chances as well, but that's the way it goes.”
After the retirement of Jimmy Nielsen in the offseason, Eric Kronberg started in goal for Sporting, just his sixth career league appearance in nine seasons with Kansas City.
“He played fantastic. He really did. He played fantastic,” Vermes said. “He's got a lot of good games ahead of him. He has nothing to be upset about, other than the fact that we lost. He played very, very well.”
Said Kronberg: “It was almost amazing. A lot of excitement for sure, some nerves, but once you get out on the field you feel like every other day and you feel comfortable and confident. It's a great place to play and just wish we could've gotten a result.”
MLS GAME INFORMATION
Sporting were also missing half of their starting back four from the MLS Cup-winning team, without fullbacks Chance Myers (right groin strain) and Seth Sinovic (right hip sprain). In addition, midfielder Paulo Nagamura (left ankle sprain) was also out of the season opener.
Homegrown Player Kevin Ellis started at right back, his third career league appearance, second as a starter. Josh Gardner slotted in on the left side of defense.
“The team played well. I don't have any criticism for any of the guys, other than the fact that we had one lapse in the midfield late in the game,” Vermes said. “We should've been very smart and kept things compact, and at the end it fell apart, but outside of that, the team played really well.”
On Wednesday, Sporting began their CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal series with a 1-0 win against Mexico’s Cruz Azul at Sporting Park. Defender Kevin Ellis scored the game’s lone goal on 17 minutes.
Here’s the Sporting team: Eric Kronberg; Seth Sinovic, Matt Besler, Ike Opara, Kevin Ellis; Oriol Rosell, Paulo Nagamura, Benny Feilhaber (C.J. Sapong 76); Graham Zusi, Claudio Bieler (Dom Dwyer 88), Sal Zizzo (Jacob Peterson 60)
“It was a big match and we expended a lot of energy. We worked very hard and it's a shame we could not get a second goal. We had some very good chances,” Vermes said. “But all in all, I think our work ethic ruled the day. But if you really take it over a 90-minute match, this is the first half and we have another half to play when we go to Mexico. We still have a big challenge in front of us.”
FC DALLAS FC Dallas kicked off the Oscar Pareja era on the right note, getting three goals in short order around halftime to claim a 3-2 win against the Montréal Impact on Saturday evening at Toyota Stadium. FC Dallas are one of five teams with 3 points from 1 game in the Western Conference. LAST MATCH
Montreal took the lead 10 minutes in when when right winger Justin Mapp beat two defenders down the right side and crossed a ball across the goalmouth to a waiting Sanna Nyassi, who easily turned it past goalkeeper Chris Seitz.
FC Dallas were level just six minutes later. Jair Benítez sent a cross from the left to Je-Vaughn Watson, who sent it forward into the box for Blas Pérez. He pushed the ball into the path of winger Fabián Castillo, who picked his spot at the far post and calmly finished past goalkeeper Troy Perkins.
In the 23rd minute, Mauro Díaz drew a penalty when he drew contact with defender Jeb Brovsky and referee Edvin Jurisevic pointed to the spot. Perez stepped up and drilled the attempt into the roof of the net to give FCD the lead.
Two minutes after the second-half restart, from a handball just outside the top of the area, Diaz sent a gorgeous free kick into the upper left corner.
Andrew Wenger pulled Montreal back to within a goal in the 65th minute, easily heading home an early looping ball from Felipe Martins.
Newcomer Mauro Diaz started the match in the playmaking role in midfield and Hendry Thomas filled the holding midfield role in Oscar Pareja’s first game in charge at FCD.
FC DALLAS (4-2-3-1): Chris Seitz - Kellyn Acosta (Andres Escobar 81), Matt Hedges, Moises Hernandez, Jair Benitez - Andrew Jacobson, Hendry Thomas (Michel 65) - Je-Vaughn Watson, Mauro Diaz (Peter Luccin 88), Fabian Castillo - Blas Perez.
TEAM NEWS Oscar Pareja won his debut as the FC Dallas field boss, the club’s third consecutive win in their season opener,
extending their undefeated streak on opening day to five matches. “It’s great to start with a win. There are a lot of things that we need to put into effect in the game to see what
we want. ... I have to say that the boys are pleased with the results of the game tonight,” Pareja said. “Little by little – it’s an on-going process. It’s a long season. They were happy, but they know there is a long way to go.”
With the departure of former MLS MVP David Ferreira in the offseason, Mauro Diaz was installed as the club’s attacking linchpin in the center of the park, and he scored a goal and added an assist in the season opener. Diaz scored 3 goals and added 2 assists in 10 league appearances (five as a starter) after arriving at midseason a year ago.
“It’s a great way to finish off a solid game from him. He was very active all game. He always wanted the ball. He is everything you look for in a No. 10,” said FCD captain Andrew Jacobson.
Chris Seitz was given the reins between the posts as the starting goalkeeper for the season opener, ahead of Richard Sanchez and Raúl Fernández.
“He really made some outstanding saves. The first save he made in the early minutes of the match was big and he continued to do well and be in good positions throughout the match,” said defender Moises Hernandez. Said Pareja: “I’m happy to see that the competition for the position is very high now. What Chris Seitz did today was outstanding, which also pushes Raul [Fernandez] and Richard [Sanchez].”
MLS GAME INFORMATION
Blas Perez picked up where he left off in 2013, scoring his first goal of the season. Perez netted 11 goals last year for FCD, five coming over the final 10 games of the season.
Fabian Castillo also scored his first goal of season, scoring just twice in 2013 after netting six goals in 2012. “Castillo showed all of his potential, with the six or seven plays and the quality… He brings a lot of quality to the flanks every game,” Pareja said.
Moises Hernández was also given the start in central defense, with nominal starter George John out injured. “Tonight’s game was a big challenge for Moises because that was his first game in that position. You know he’s young and that position isn’t natural for him, which is hard, but I think he did great,” said Pareja.

SPORTING KC NEWS & NOTES
Sporting KC defeats Cruz Azul 1-0 in first leg
Sporting Kansas City will enter the second leg of the CONCACAF Champi-ons League quarterfinals ahead on aggregate after the team’s 1-0 victory over Cruz Azul on Wednesday at Sporting Park. Homegrown defender Kevin Ellis scored the decisive goal in the 17th minute on an assist from Designated Player Claudio Bieler.
Eric Kronberg recorded his fourth shutout of the tournament, most among all goalkeepers in the competition and most by a Sporting KC player all-time in international competition, and lowered his goals against average in the CCL to 0.20 with only one goal allowed in five games. Sporting Kansas City and Cruz Azul will meet again in the return leg at 9 p.m. CT on March 19 at Estadio Azul in Mexico City with a berth in the semifinals at stake.
Matt Besler named team captain
Sporting KC manager Peter Vermes has selected Matt Besler as the team’s captain for the 2014 season. The defender assumes the role after the retirement of Jimmy Nielsen, who was the club’s captain for the two previ-ous seasons.
Besler has appeared in more than 100 MLS matches since being drafted in the first round of the 2009 MLS SuperDraft out of Notre Dame. An Over-land Park, Kan. native, Besler was voted an MLS All-Star in 2011 and 2013 and debuted for the U.S. Men’s National Team in 2013.
Sporting KC signs Antonio Dovale
Sporting Kansas City has signed Spanish midfielder Antonio Rodriguez Dovale, the club announced this week. Dovale will be added to the team’s 2014 roster upon receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 Visa and will occupy the club’s fifth of eight available international roster spots.
Dovale began his career in the youth system of Ural CF, a club in his hometown of A Coruña, Galicia, Spain. He then played four years in the Barcelona Academy alongside future professionals Jonathan Dos Santos (FC Barcelona), Thiago Alcântara (Bayern Munich) and Bojan Krkic (Ajax FC).
The Spanish midfielder signed a professional contract with second division club Celta de Vigo when he was 16 years old and played there for three years before going on a year-long loan to SD Huesca. Dovale returned to Celta de Vigo prior to the 2011-12 season and helped the club earn promotion to LigaBBVA with two goals in 30 appearances.

Game #1 03/08/2014 KC 0 at SEA 1 L
FC DALLAS INJURY REPORT QUESTIONABLE – Raul Fernandez (GK) sports hernia; George John (D) right knee; Walker Zimmerman (D) groin; Zach Loyd (D) right hip strain; London Woodberry (D) right hamstring strain. ROSTER TURNOVER TIMELINE DEC. 9 – FC Dallas traded Jackson to Toronto FC for allocation money and a conditional second‐round pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft. FC Dallas came to terms with its second‐round selection in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft, Ryan Hollingshead. The 22‐year‐old midfielder elected to help his brother build a church in Sacramento, Calif., rather than turn pro after being selected by FC Dallas with the 20
th overall pick in the Jan. 17, 2013 draft.
DEC. 13 – Dallas acquired veteran defensive midfielder Adam Moffat from Seattle Sounders FC in exchange for allocation money and the rights to Kenny Cooper. Moffat, 27, set career‐highs with 26 appearances, 24 starts and three goals for Houston in 2013 before the Dynamo traded him to Seattle in mid‐September. JAN. 2 – FC Dallas re‐signed defender Zach Loyd. Drafted fifth overall by FC Dallas in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, Loyd appeared in 111 of the club’s 132 MLS regular‐season matches in the past four seasons, second only to Jair Benitez (114). JAN. 9 – FC Dallas acquired midfielder Brian Span in a weighted lottery conducted by Major League Soccer. Span, 22, spent the past two seasons with Swedish first‐division side Djurgårdens IF, where he made 14 appearances and scored one goal. JAN. 16 – FC Dallas selected forward Tesho Akindele with the sixth overall pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft presented by adidas. A native of Thornton, Colo., Akindele played four seasons for the Colo. School of Mines where the 6’1” forward became the school’s all‐time goals leader with 76 goals scored. JAN. 21 – FC Dallas lands defender Nicholas Walker in the third round (43
rd
overall) of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft presented by adidas. Walker, 24, was a two‐time all‐North Atlantic region first team selection at Fairleigh Dickinson. The center back was also named 2013 Northeast Conference Defender of the Year as a senior. JAN. 23 – FC Dallas re‐signs French midfielder Peter Luccin. The 34‐year‐old was one of the inspirational stories of 2013 as Luccin, after suffering a serious knee injury early in preseason, rehabbed throughout the sweltering Texas summer to earn a re‐activation to the FC Dallas roster in mid‐Sept. FEB. 12 – FC Dallas acquired defensive midfielder Hendry Thomas from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for allocation money. The Honduran joined the Rapids midway through the 2012 season and started the final eight games of that year before claiming 27 starts in 2013 with two goals and one assist for the Rapids. FEB. 14 – FC Dallas acquired forward Andrés Escobar on loan from Ukrainian power Dynamo Kiev. A native of Colombia, the 22‐year‐old forward has been with Ligue 1 club Évian on loan from Dynamo Kiev where he signed in 2011 at age 20 from Deportivo Cali.
FEB. 21 – FC Dallas acquired Uruguayan forward David Texeira from FC Groningen as a young designated player. The 22‐year‐old forward has been with Eredevisie side FC Groningen since 2011, appearing in 65 matches and scoring 14 goals for the club. HOMEGROWN HERNANDEZ’S FIRST START It took 1,316 days for Moises Hernandez to make his first MLS start with FC Dallas since signing his initial Homegrown contract with the club on July 30, 2010.Hernandez played all 90 minutes for FC Dallas in the 3‐2 season‐opening win over Montreal on 3/8. “It’s always been a dream of mine to play here in Dallas,” Hernandez said. “I remember the first game [I watched] here in the stadium. Ever since that day, I came with my dad and Carlos Ruiz scored for FCD. I fell in love with FC Dallas. It’s a dream come true that I’m here.” HOMEGROWN INITIATIVE FC Dallas has signed 11 Homegrown players, more than any club in MLS history. Of those 11, eight have seen time with the first team. Hernandez was one of two Homegrown players to start on the back line versus Montreal. There were four Homegrown players in the top 18. FC DALLAS’ YOUNGEST HOMEGROWN PLAYER FC Dallas’ most‐seasoned Homegrown player is also its youngest. A then 17‐year‐old Kellyn Acosta became the fifth FC Dallas Homegrown player to start an MLS match on 8/11/13. During his first start, which came against the LA Galaxy, Acosta was deployed in three positions (left back, right back and center midfield) due to injuries that occurred during the match. Now 18, Acosta netted two goals for FC Dallas this preseason. Despite being the youngest of FC Dallas’ 11 Homegrown signings (60 days younger than goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez), Acosta has played the most MLS minutes (1085). MLS TEAM OF THE WEEK Fabian Castillo scored FC Dallas’ first goal of the season in the 16
th minute
and Mauro Diaz netted the eventual game‐winner via free kick in the 47th
minute. Diaz also created the penalty kick opportunity that was hammered home by Blas Perez in the 24
th minute. For their efforts, both were named to
the MLS Team of the Week for week 1. PRESEASON RESULTS Date Score Opponent Scoring MARCH 1 1‐1 San Antonio (NASL) Acosta (Michel) 47 FEB. 22 6‐1 Ft. Lauderdale (NASL) Perez (Castillo) 17,

th CAREER MLS START
Adam Moffat may be new to FC Dallas, but the Scottish‐born midfielder is only two starts away from his 100
th regular‐season MLS start. Should Moffat
be named to the starting XI against Sporting KC this weekend, he will be in line to hit the century mark against Chivas USA at Toyota Stadium on March 22.
ELITE GOALSCORER: BLAS PEREZ Blas Perez had his best season in MLS in 2013. He scored 11 goals and set up three more in 21 starts. The Panamanian surpassed his goal total from the 2012 season when he scored in the 19
th minute of FC Dallas’ 2‐2 draw against
San Jose on 8/24. Despite missing nine games last season due to international call‐ups and suspensions, Perez eclipsed his minutes‐played total of 1705 in the second minute of Dallas’ 4‐2 loss to Columbus on 9/29. In just two seasons and one match in 2014, Perez (21) has climbed to 11
th all‐
time in goals scored for the franchise. He needs two goals to match FC Dallas legend Bobby Rhine (23), three to equal the output of David Ferreira/Eddie Johnson/Dante Washington (24), four to catch Jorge Rodriguez (25) and 10 to surpass Ariel Graziani’s total of 30 for fifth all‐time in FCD history. BATTLE AT LEFT BACK One of the most intriguing battles for a spot in the starting 11 has been between left‐footed defenders Michel and Jair Benitez. In his first year with FC Dallas in 2013, Michel (8) ranked second behind David Ferreira (9) in assists. He also added three goals, one of which came directly off of a corner kick versus Seattle on 5/18/13. The 32‐year‐old Brazilian logged 2,284 minutes at left back and in the defensive midfield in 2013. Now 35 years old and the oldest player on the FC Dallas roster, Benitez logged 2,473 minutes last season, which was second only to Matt Hedges. He scored a goal and had one assist in 2013. Benitez (128) needs six more appearances this season to surpass Mark Santel (133) for eighth all‐time in FC Dallas history. Benitez (122) will also take over the sixth position from Chad Deering (132) in games started for FC Dallas in 11 matches. Benitez edged Michel for the starting spot on opening day. One of three Colombians to see time for FC Dallas in the match (along with Andres Escobar and Fabian Castillo), he led all FCD players with 121 actions. He also completed 37 passes and intercepted three of Montreal’s passes. STARTING IN NET With 2013 MLS all‐star goalkeeper Raul Fernandez rehabbing an injury, goalkeepers Chris Seitz and Richard Sanchez split time in goal this preseason. Seitz started the last three matches for FC Dallas in 2013 and earned the starting role versus Montreal on March 8. The California‐native now has 43 MLS starts under his belt, 13 of which have been for FC Dallas. Seitz started eight MLS matches for Dallas in 2013. He finished the year with a 1.38 GAA, 24 saves, two shutouts and a 4‐2‐2 record. He recorded six saves in Dallas’ season‐opening win against Montreal. OPTA STATS VERSUS MONTREAL Benitez: 37 of 56 passes completed, three interceptions, 121 total actions. Hedges: 12 clearances, 93% of passes were completed. Diaz: 43 of 49 passes completed (88%). Castillo: six successful dribbles. Perez: 10 headers won. CASTROL INDEX RATING Chris Seitz(11
th – 1,025), Fabian Castillo (15
th ‐ 991) and Mauro Diaz (19
th ‐
844) finished the week in the Top 20 of the Castrol Index Ratings. CASTILLO’S BREAKOUT SEASON Judging by his Top 20 Castrol Index Rating after one match, Fabian Castillo is primed for a breakout year in 2014. The winger averaged 1.7 shots per game through 66 starts in MLS since his first appearance in the starting XI on April 1, 2011. Against Montreal, Castillo took five shots, putting him second in MLS behind only SKC’s Dom Dwyer (6). OSCAR PAREJA NAMED FC DALLAS HEAD COACH On Jan. 10, 2014, former Dallas standout Oscar Pareja was named head coach of FC Dallas. Pareja first joined the Dallas Burn in Aug. 1998. The Colombian star hung up his boots in 2005 after tallying 13 goals and 47 assists (second all‐time) in a Dallas kit. He spent two seasons as an assistant coach for FC Dallas before joining Wilmer Cabrera’s staff with the U.S. U‐17 Men’s National Team. In 2008, Pareja rejoined FC Dallas as Director of Player Development for the FC Dallas Youth system, a program he quickly established as one of the nation’s best.
The Colorado Rapids named Pareja head coach following the 2011 season and in two seasons, the former Dallas man went 25‐30‐13, orchestrating a 2013 turnaround that saw the Rapids climb back into the postseason and had Pareja widely featured among Coach of the Year chatter throughout the season. The Colorado Rapids received a first round 2015 MLS SuperDraft pick and allocation money as compensation for Pareja. DAN HUNT NAMED FC DALLAS PRESIDENT On Jan. 20, 2014, FC Dallas Chairman Clark Hunt announced Dan Hunt as President of FC Dallas. As president, Dan Hunt will direct all of the business operations of FC Dallas and FC Dallas Youth. Dan Hunt has been involved in various aspects of the club for several years, beginning as a vice president for Hunt Sports Group and, most recently, as interim president of FCD since the end of the 2012 season. Hunt will also continue to play a lead role representing the club with FCD’s corporate partners, the North Texas soccer community and FCD’s supporters. Hunt joins Technical Director Fernando Clavijo and Oscar Pareja as part of the leadership team that will report to Clark Hunt, who adds the club’s CEO responsibilities to his role as chairman. FC DALLAS BREAKS ALL‐TIME SEASON ATTENDANCE RECORD IN 2013 FC Dallas averaged 15,373 per match in 2013. That total ranked 14
th in the
league. Dallas ranked 15th in the league in 2012 and 17
th in the league in
2011. The club set the Toyota Stadium attendance record for an MLS season in 2012 by drawing 218,636. FC Dallas finished the 2013 season drawing 261,346. That total is 5,170 above the previous all‐time franchise record for attendance in a season (256,176), which was set in 1996. HEDGES’ HISTORIC RUN With fellow center backs George John and Walker Zimmerman rehabbing injuries from 2013, third‐year center back Matt Hedges is a vital cog in FC Dallas’ formula for success. Luckily for Dallas, Hedges ironman status has been well documented. He appeared in his 52
nd consecutive game for Dallas
on 9/14/13, surpassing Ted Eck’s run of 51 games from 4/5/98 through 7/31/99. Hedges streak ended on 10/5/13 when Stephen Keel took over Hedges position next to John, effectively ending the UNC product’s run of 54 consecutive appearances. Hedges’ streak began on 5/9/12. POINTS EARNED Despite missing out on the playoffs for the second consecutive season in 2013, FC Dallas improved its point total from the 2012 season. The team finished the 2012 MLS season with a 9‐13‐12 (39 points) record. FC Dallas’ 2013 record was 11‐12‐11 (44 points). TOYOTA STADIUM AND TOYOTA SOCCER CENTER FC Dallas reached a long‐term agreement with Toyota on Sept. 10, 2013, to name the popular North Texas sports and entertainment venue Toyota Stadium, while the 17 professional‐grade soccer fields adjacent to the stadium will be called Toyota Soccer Center. RED FRIDAY FRISCO On Fridays preceding a weekend home match (16 Fridays in 2014), FCD will be working with the City of Frisco, over 500 Frisco Partner Businesses, FISD, Frisco HOAs, Frisco Soccer Association and many more to paint the town red. Red Friday Frisco will include: over 500 Frisco business partners hanging Red Friday Frisco flags in their store locations, fireworks will be shot off from the south of Toyota Stadium, FC Dallas youth soccer clinics being held within Frisco HOA’s at no cost to the association residents and much more. FC DALLAS RESERVES OPEN 2014 SEASON WITH WIN The FC Dallas Reserves (1‐0‐0, 3 points) defeated the Montreal Impact Reserves, 2‐0, on AdvoCare Field 1 on Sunday, March 9. Andres Escobar opened the scoring for FC Dallas in the 45
th minute before Stephen Keel
added an insurance goal in the second half. Peter Luccin had a hand in both goals. The veteran midfielder picked up an assist on Escobar’s goal and tagged the crossbar on a free kick attempt seconds before Keel nodded home the second goal of the day. FC Dallas Homegrown goalkeeper, Richard Sanchez also earned his first win and clean sheet of the season.
