Gametophyte of Marchantia sp
Gametophyte of Marchantia sp.All gametophytes are haploid (n). The state of gametophyte is called thesexual generationof the plant. They can produce gametes for fertilization. The sexual generation terminates as the zygote is formed. Then, the zygote is diploid (2n) and develops into theasexual generation.
The gametophyte of a Marchantia is athallus. A thallus is a leaf-like structure on wet-soil surface or floating on water surface. The lower side is composed of thin-walled cells for the storage of nutrient. Multicellularrhizoids may extend out for the absorption of water and minerals. The upper side is composed of columns of chloroplast-bearing cells for photosynthesis.

The number of thalluses can be increased by fragmentation.Gemmae cupscan be produced on the upper side. Inside the gemmae cup are a number of buds calledgemmae. When the gemmae are detached and reach satisfactory conditions, they would germinate to produce new thalluses. This is the way ofasexual reproduction.
