WALK-FOR-A-CAUSE IN SUPPORT OF
NATIONAL KIDNEY FOUNDATION (NKF)
The design of the programme for Founder’s Day 2016 is to actualise the school’s Learning for Life Programme (LLP) through experience beyond the classroom.
The event was kick-started by the arrival of the NKF bus to provide opportunities for students to ‘Discover’ and increase their understanding on kidney disease, prevention, treating kidney failure and leading healthy lifestyles through interactive exhibits.
To enable the students to ‘Develop’ good habits and build on their visit on board the NKF bus, the school invited NKF to conduct its outreach programme to add a new dimension to their academic learning, as well as develop compassion and social entrepreneurship.
The main highlight for this year’s programme is to enable students to ‘Design’ their world through reaching out to the public and heightening public awareness on the importance of kidney health in conjunction with ‘World Kidney Health Day’. This activity aims to extend the philanthropic spirit the school has adopted from its founder and to provide opportunities beyond the classroom to nurture the ‘Active Contributor’ in students with pre-Founder’s Day activities culminating in the ‘Walk-for-a-Cause’ on 11 March in support of NKF’s event at Vivocity.
Through the Founder’s Day event and activities, we hope to enable all staff, students and partners, past and present, to ‘Desire, Know and Do the Good’, by actualising the three D's of the LLP using the home-school-community approach as we respond to a national cause.

...I encourage all Gessians to hold on to these three things as we learn to be innovative thinkers for the 21st century: seize the opportunities around you, reframe any problem to probe for opportunities, and seek to acquire more knowledge. Onward!

FOUNDER’S DAY 2016Dear Gessians,
This Founder’s Day, we celebrate with the theme which is taken from our GESS Student Portrait – Innovative Thinker. One
interesting story that I’ve been reading recently, which is related to the theme, is called Acres of Diamonds. This story is about being aware of all the opportunities that surround us – if only our eyes could see them.
There was once a wealthy man in India called Al Hafed. He lived a peaceful life, until someone told him of the existence of diamonds in the world. Al Hafed was so taken by this news that he sold his farm and travelled all over the world, to search for the diamonds which eluded him. He became poor and depressed, and finally drowned himself.
Back at his former farm, the new owner discovered a brightly shining rock in the river on the property. He picked it up and brought it home. Sometime later, his rock was recognised as a large diamond.
In this way, the diamond mine of Golconda was found. Golconda is supposed to be one of the most amazing diamond mines in all history, and the famous Hope diamond is believed to come from the Golconda mine.
What is the lesson of this story?
First, you do not need to look far for opportunities or achievement, as they are all around you. The innovative thinker does not wait for ideal conditions to exist before he starts innovating; rather, he makes do with the materials and opportunities that are around him. This is part of the ethos that was imbibed by our senior Gessians, many of whom reminisce about the good old days when the school did not have as many resources as today, and yet they made good use of what was available, in order to seek and make progress. This philosophy prevails in what we see our senior Gessians do today, when we watch them make use of available opportunities to do the good that they know and desire, for the sake of the school.
Second, problems usually contain the seeds of opportunity. As innovative thinkers, we should always be thinking of how to reframe any problem in order to see the potential opportunities that lie within. When diamonds are first taken from the mine, they usually look dull, rough and unappealing. To recognise a true diamond, we need to have clear vision that looks past the superficial to see the true value within. The average person only sees the difficulties and gives up, but a Gessian who is an innovative thinker is flexible in his thinking and visioning, in order to find the gems that are opportunities.
Third, what should Al Hafed have done, in order to enjoy the acres of diamonds on his original farm? He should have learnt about what diamonds looked like, and where they are to be found, before he started looking for them. Knowledge is a precious thing as it enables the innovative thinker to increase the odds of finding what it is that he seeks. Otherwise, without knowledge, it is easy for the person to give up as he does not have a clear idea of what to look for, and where it is to be found.
In conclusion, I encourage all Gessians to hold on to these three things as we learn to be innovative thinkers for the 21st century: seize the opportunities around you, reframe any problem to probe for opportunities, and seek to acquire more knowledge. Onward!

Christine is one Gessian who exemplifies the spirit of learning, playing and living at the fore. As a self-directed learner, her attitude towards
learning is commendable. She has a zest for learning and was always one of the top students for various subjects in her class. She emerged as our school’s top student in the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Normal (Academic) Level Examination in 2014 and our school’s top GCE O-Level Normal Academic student in 2015. These achievements came with hard work and a positive attitude. Christine made sure she observed our school’s core values – Discipline, Integrity, Resilience and Respect – in her journey towards success.
As a recipient of our GESS All-Round Excellence Award, Christine was an active and dedicated member of the GESS Dragon Scouts. She displayed a high level of commitment and enthusiasm in the discharge of her duties. She was a good role model for her juniors, and always provided help and advice. She was also recognised for her contribution and leadership qualities, thus was promoted to the rank of Senior Patrol Leader in 2014. For her concerted participation and active contribution, she was awarded the Bronze Medal for the National Youth Achievement Award in 2013.
In addition, Christine has a heart for the community. In the area of community involvement, Christine completed more than 200 hours of community service. This was way beyond what was expected of her and her peers.
Christine has shown an ability to strike a balance between academic and CCA achievements. Being self-driven, motivated and responsible, she has the perseverance to stretch her potential and strive for more. Christine is indeed an inspiration to our young Gessians.
TRIBUTE TO TEACHERSGan Eng Seng School was my home for five years. In these five years, I have grown a lot as a person. I would like to highlight three teachers who have supported me throughout my journey in school.
Firstly, Mr Phua Jeffrey who taught me Additional Mathematics in 2014 and 2015 stood out for me because he put in a lot of effort into making the class enjoyable. Mr Phua also encouraged us to participate actively during class. Being able to count on him for extra help was really special to me because it showed that he cared for the success of his students.
The second teacher is Mr Chan Hoong Leong who was the teacher-in-charge for my Co-Curricular Activity (CCA), Dragon Scouts. When I was first given a leadership role, I found it tough. However, Mr Chan guided my council and I through the many challenges we faced. He even took the time to highlight our mistakes and praise our accomplishments after every CCA meeting. He instilled values in me such as responsibility and endurance.
Finally, I would like to thank my PE teacher, Mr John Yim. When I joined GESS, I disliked going for PE classes and would rather stay in class. I slowly grew to enjoy playing sports due to his continuous efforts in highlighting the importance of fitness and making it fun. He has taught me that while it is important to study, it is also important to take breaks in between. He has embedded that rule in me so much that I have opted to take up a sports CCA in my new school.
In all, I would like to thank all the GESS teachers for giving me the best school experience and for going the extra mile. I appreciate it more than you will ever know.

TRIBUTE TO TEACHERSI am thankful for all teachers in Gan Eng Seng School who guided me through the adversities I faced, and for nurturing me to be a confident individual. The invaluable values instilled in me will remain with me for the many years to come. I have three groups of teachers to thank in particular. Firstly, my Secondary 1 form teachers, Mr Ken Ng and Mr Derrick Ng helped me adapt to the new surroundings as I was still a shy and reserved person then. They taught me to have a positive mindset. Secondly, I thank my Secondary Three and Four teachers Mr Qaleelullah, Ms Heather Chow and Mr Chan Hoong Leong. They constantly encouraged me and my class to work hard and overcome tough circumstances. This taught me to be resilient when faced with challenges and to keep going on. Last but not least, the teachers in charge of Prefectorial Board and Student Leaders who believed in me and kept pushing me to take the leap of faith. I am truly grateful for the advice and countless opportunities given that helped me to be a better leader. Thank you teachers, for the advice and words of encouragement that motivated me as I work towards my goal.

GESS teacher, 1960-1968
In eighteen-eighty five, our founder Gan Eng Seng
Conceived the noble aim for a new breed of men

To give them a chance to be something more
To teach them to learn, play and live at the fore
To give of their best and say forever more
