How To Keep Your Car Payments Down

Some of us want to drive a certain vehicle, regardless of the cost. But if you’re willing to make a few changes to get your payments down, read on for some suggestions.

l SAVE UP FOR A DOWN PAYMENT. You know your vehicle won’t last forever. So whether it’s a lease or a purchase, put a little money aside each month for your next vehicle. Every dollar you save is a dollar you won’t have to finance.

l SCALE BACK A LITTLE. Do you really need a fancy naviga-tion system, memory seats and the designer stereo? You can save a bundle by taking the basic option package.

l SEE US FOR HELP. You may not have to wait for your next purchase to lower your payments. Bring us your current auto loans, and we’ll be happy to refinance them. If you lower your rate and/or extend your terms, that can make a big difference in the monthly payment.

Help Your IRA Catch UpMaybe you just haven’t had a chance to save as much for retirement as you’d like. Well, don’t panic. Instead, concentrate on building your IRA from this point forward.

Catch-up contributions: If you’re over the age of 50, you can contribute an extra $1,000 to your 2007 Traditional or Roth IRA for a total of $5,000. Next year the total will go up to $6,000.

A year-round savings plan: Lots of people wait until April to contribute for the previous year. But it really makes more sense to deposit money each month. That way your account has extra time to grow. We can set up automatic transfers to make it easy and convenient.

Other ideas: If your IRA still won’t cover all of your retirement needs, it’s time to consider some other alternatives. You could take on a second job right now, or plan to work part-time after retirement. If you own a large house, you might want to down-size or take a look at a reverse mortgage program.

Red Flags To Watch For...Emails and phone calls can sometimes catch us off guard. Today’s criminals are so clever, they can sometimes get you to respond before you realize what they’re really up to. And the next thing you know, you have left yourself open to identity theft or fraud.

When should you be suspicious? These phrases could be warning signs:

l “Congratulations! You’re a winner!” You may be told that you have won a sweepstakes or a contest, even though you don’t remember entering one. In order to get your prize, of course, you need to send money. Don’t do it.

l “Your account has been compromised! We need your password or it will be shut down!” These types of scare tactics are commonly used by scammers. In fact, the more urgent or threatening the tone is, the more likely it is to be a scam.

l “I need your asistence for money to obtain.” Many scams originate in foreign countries, so poor English can be a tip-off that something is not right.
