Gardenia augusta
Much loved garden shrub
Gardenia Gardenias are a very popular ornamental for temperate to warm climate gardens. The fragrant, large, beautiful creamy white rose-like flowers are seen in the warmer months. This versatile shrub has attractive, glossy deep green leaves that can be pruned as a hedge, grown as a standard and look great in pots. Gardenias are great for any garden and especially a formal garden where they can be pruned to shape. They love well-drained soil that is slightly acidic with good quality compost and fertilizer. Some of the common varieties are:
Gardenia ‘Florida’ – Most common variety 1m x 1m bushy growth Gardenia ‘Magnifica’ – 2m x 1.5m and larger flowers Gardenia ‘Radicans’ – low ground cover with small leaves and flowers Gardenia ‘Aimee Yoshiba’ – 1.5m tall with large flowers, great trained as a standard
