THE 7’S

What an exciting time for the Squadron! Our Soldiers continue to do extraordinary things and I couldn’t be more proud of this team’s performance.

Over the last month we’ve continued to build our partnership with the Kuwaiti Army. The mutual trust, respect, and learning that is occurring are making a difference in this country and I know we are having fun working with them. Along the way, our Troopers are continuing to executing tough, realistic training as we hone the edge of our individual and collective skills.

We are already a great outfit but we intend on returning to Fort Hood as the best trained Cavalry Squadron in the Army. Therefore we aren’t going to slow down as we enter the home stretch of the deployment. Over the next six weeks we’ll execute an intense training cycle that includes Bradley Gunnery, Mortar Gunnery, Platoon Maneuver training, Unstablized Gunnery, Javelin training while simultaneously continuing to strengthen our partnership with the 94th Kuwaiti Brigade and executing services on our equipment.

Our Troopers continue to strive for excellence on a daily

basis resulting in several of our Soldiers earning

well-deserved recognition in the BCT FIST certification

or some of our mortar men earning their Expert

Infantryman’s Badges. I want to once again thank the

Troopers for what they do every day and all of our

families for their untiring love and support.

SEVENTH FIRST!

Camp Buehring, Kuwait— The Soldiers of 1st Squadron, 7th US Cavalry

Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, departed from

Camp Buehring, Kuwait, every Wednesday for a meeting with the 94th

Kuwaiti brigade around Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. The Squadron leadership

spent time building a friendship to partner with our Kuwaiti brothers. The

partnership includes identifying areas of common interest and interoperability

for future partnerships, building a culture for the US Soldiers to understand

and learn foreign military, and energize our Soldiers to increase their

knowledge of Arab culture, alluded Capt. David Sherck, commander for

DFST. The partnership with the Kuwaiti brigade shows the strong need to

foster an understanding of military culture outside the normal boundaries for

our US Soldiers. This gives the GARRYOWEN Soldier an opportunity to

learn and grow in his/her military career. As the partnership continues, the

next area of interest will focus upon the staff areas of the brigade.

GUNNERY PICTURES!!

With the conclusion of another month spent in the dusty sands of Kuwait, the Soldiers of 1-7 CAV delivered an explosive result. The unit moved into their gunnery operations to qualify Soldiers in their Bradley Fighting Vehicles thru Table VI. The Soldiers formed crews of four Soldiers to train and execute how to work as a team. The teams completed training on the Bradleys in the areas of: loading the weapon systems, driving the vehicle, communications, battlefield strategies, and the most awesome part of the training—blowing something up! Now that is good training!

The teams within the Troops will compete against one another for the best crew. This competition is coveted within the ranks of the GARRYOWEN Soldiers. It brings pride, espirit de corps, and a substantial amount of trash talking amongst the Troopers. As always, the Soldiers of GARRYOWEN executed the training with the high standards and discipline they have shown throughout the centuries. GARRYOWEN!!

CPT Marc Jason relinquished command of Apache Troop, 1-7 CAV, 1BCT, 1CD, on March 21st, 2012. After one year of steadfast leadership, CPT Jason will move over to command a second group of Soldiers in Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2-8 CAV, 1BCT, 1CD.

CPT Jason led the Apache Troop during an National Training Center rotation in Fort Irwin, California, unit gunneries, a historical retrograde of personnel and equipment for United States Forces-Iraq, and the current mission 1-7 CAV finds itself serving upon in Kuwait. CPT Jason served as a staff officer in the S3 shop before taking command. CPT Jason gave his Soldiers a tremendous example of leadership and knowledge to guide them in trainings and missions. CPT Jason will be missed in the GARRYOWEN family. Yet, we will still see him down the road in 2-8 CAV

cheering for his beloved Georgia Southern football team.

The incoming commander, CPT Michael Kiser, served in the S3 shop as the unit’s planner. He brings a vast amount of knowledge and tenacity to lead these fine warriors in upcoming trainings and mis-sions. Congratulations, CPT Kiser on the privilege to command!!

HELLFIGHTER

Hello again from beautiful Kuwait! March has been a crazy month for the Squadron and Hellfighter Troop. The Soldiers have really hit the training hard and the weather has tried to fight back on every turn. We have seen beautiful days and a few turning orange with the wind blowing us off our feet. Overall, March has been a very busy month with our Kuwaiti partnership, FIST Qualification, Driver’s training, CLS, gunnery preparations and gunnery itself. The Soldiers in the staff sections and medical platoon make great strides and continue to make our Squadron better. In the beginning of the month our Fire Supporters continued with their FIST University, which quickly transitioned into their qualification. The Squadron sent three teams with our HHT Fire Support NCOs providing support. With their input and help, the Squadron was able to take the top three spots in the Brigade. While our FA guys were lobbing big bullets downrange, we continued to strive forward with a few things on Camp Buehring. We sent a handful of Soldiers to conduct driver’s training increasing our numbers and capabilities to maneuver our Troop. A few of us traveled down to visit our Kuwaiti brothers to conduct our first partnership event. SFC Moore, SSG Robbins, SGT McDaniel and I spent three days working with the Kuwaiti military police company to share the best practices. SGT McDaniel took the lead on familiarizing the Kuwaitis on checkpoint operations, vehicle searches and personnel searches. Over the three days we worked with over 60 Kuwaiti Soldiers sharing with them techniques to increase their ability to react towards problems at their checkpoint. They also showed us a few things we will incorporate into our future training. Much to the dismay of SSG Robbins, SGT McDaniel taught them how to control a person by holding just their fingers. The Kuwaiti Soldiers promised not to break each other’s fingers using his technique. At the end of the month, we sent a few more Soldiers to partner as the Kuwaitis zeroed their M-16 rifles. Our partnership with the Kuwaitis continues to be a good experience for some of our Soldiers and will continue throughout April and May. This month also saw our S-6 shop and medical platoon enter into vehicle and personnel services. This has allowed all of our vehicles to receive their annual repair services to ensure a long life of use in the Army. Most of the vehicles were in great condition having just received them from the APS-5 draw last month. We also had the Soldiers visit the S-1 shop to update their emergency contact form and life

insurance forms. In addition to those they updated their enlisted record briefs, APFT card, awards, finances and legal. Our S-1 shop, led by our new Adjutant, 2LT Hansen, has done a great job getting our Soldier’s paperwork correct. As the S-1 shop works to improve our individual Soldiers, the rest of the staff has worked diligently to plan the Squadron’s gunnery density and future training. They have put together plans on gunnery and assisted the line troops on their platoon and troop maneuver plans. The staff also worked closely with the Kuwaitis throughout the weeks to help them with numerous events. Our workhorse for this month has been the medical platoon. They have been working through services and also training the Squadron’s Soldiers on CLS and Pegasus First Responder. They have conducted numerous classes and re-certifications to get the Squadron healthy. LTC Southerland and MAJ Campion have been busy conducting gunnery skills testing and shooting gunnery as well with their crews. It will be a tight race for the best overall score during the culminating table VI in April. Finally we would like to congratulate our newly promotable Staff Sergeants on their selection to Sergeant First Class. SSG Rawcliffe (A Troop FSNCO) and SSG Willey (B Troop FSNCO) made the list. From our medics we had SSG Slaughter and SSG White as well as SSG Manyen (A Troop). Our Master Gunner, SSG Waddell, was also picked up. SSG Trevino, our career counselor, completes our list. Congratulations to all of them and their Families. The Troop is training hard for the home stretch of the deployment. First Sergeant Hankal and I have seen great improvements in each section and will continue to push hard to fine tune our processes. We are extremely proud of where we are and the work our Soldiers have done. Please continue to support them and the mission. Thanks for everyone’s support. As-Salamu Alaykum from Kuwait!

March has been a good, but busy, month for Apache Troopers. While preparing for the change of command and conducting inventories, the Troopers still managed to conduct BATS and Gunnery Skills Testing as well several weapons ranges and equipment services for Red Platoon. The Troop Fire Support Team (LT Murphy, SSG Rawcliffe, SPC Orozco, and SPC Pierce) placed second in the Brigade FST cert---a truly excellent job. Apache Troopers also participated in the Squadron Sports day, where the team of LT Schultz, SSG Hoops, SGT Mitchell, SSG Webb, and PFC Craven destroyed the competition to win the “Fight Gone Bad” event by over 100 points.

Looking ahead, the Troop will be shooting Bradley Gunnery during the first week of April, followed by a week in the field later on for platoon maneuver training. The mortar section will be firing its mortar gunnery in the second week of April. While being busy doesn’t make us miss our families any less, it certainly helps the time go by faster!

Congratulations again to SSG Manyen and SSG Rawcliffe, who were selected for promotion to Sergeant First Class! BLACKHAWK

March again saw Blackhawk busy training

and preparing for future training. The focus for

the month was and continues to be upcoming

SQDN gunnery with most of the events for the

month focused on accomplishing this task.

Blackhawk Troopers put all of our vehicles and

equipment through services, ensuring the

equipment is in top shape and will stay that

way for a long time. The Bradley Fighting

Vehicle crews conducted pre-gunnery training

and testing both in the BATS simulation system

and also during Gunnery Skills Testing. During

both, Blackhawk showed its merit by getting

numerous 1st time "go’s" without significant

issues. All the drivers in the Troop conducted

drivers training to learn either new systems or

brush up on vehicles they have not driven on

for some time. All and all, Blackhawk Troop is

ready for gunnery where we are confident that

we will do extremely well.

In other news, Blackhawk showed its stuff at

Garryowen Sports Day, where our Troopers

battled it out with other Troops in the SQDN in

order to come in the overall 1st place slot.

In the rear, Blackhawk spouses continue to be

the rock we anchor upon. Please continue

your involvement in supporting FRG events at

the Troop and SQDN level.

Comanche Troop families and friends, The last month seemed to fly by for our Soldiers as we began our preparations and crew certifications for gunnery. Troopers stayed busy preparing vehicles to shoot, move and communicate during gunnery. Countless hours were spent shedding blood, sweat and even a couple tears during Comanche Troop’s Gunnery Skills Testing (GST). Not surprisingly, Comanche Troop’s outstanding corps of NCO’s proved critical to our successful completion of the testing. Every NCO in the Troop worked diligently to coach, teach and mentor new Troopers on weapons disassembly and re-assembly and prepare them for the upcoming Gunnery challenges. Special thanks to SSG Mansfield, for his professional teaching techniques from his vast base of gunnery knowledge prior to the testing events. SSG Mansfield’s dedication to the Troop and the Squadron during GST, ensured each vehicle crew was properly resource and professionally trained throughout the event. Congratulations to our Fire Support

Team (FIST) for placing 3rd overall in the

Brigade during their culminating training

event known as FIST University. Led by

worked tediously during the weeks leading

up to the major training event. The hard

work and dedication to their team and the

Troop was apparent during the field

training portion where their team scored an

impressive 1395 out of 1400 possible

points. “Way to lead from the front,

gentleman!”

More exciting news from the Comanche Troop ranks. Special congratulations to the following Soldiers on their most recent promotions. PVT Dakota Duree made it to the next level and is now proudly wearing the rank of PFC. SPC Cody Kirchoff was promoted to the rank of SGT.

SGT Luis Gonzales and SGT Phillip Trahan were also pined as SSG. In keeping with the finest military traditions, SPC Richard Sooy and SGT James Murdough, raised their right hands and swore an oath to continue their dedicated service to our great nation and reenlisted this last month.

In other events, three new arrivals showed up on the Comanche Troop front door. I would like to officially welcome PFC Nicholas Babich and PFC Sean Beaver to the Troop. These Soldiers may be new to the Army, but they wasted no time making an outstanding first impression within the Troop. I would also like to officially welcome 2LT Nathan Kish to our Troop family. 2LT Kish took the reins as Platoon Leader for Comanche White Platoon and has done an exceptional job continuing to lead them to success.

Hand in hand with new arrivals are

the expected but never easy departures.

Special thanks to SPC Jason Chapman and

SGT Bryan Fitzgerald for your countless

contributions, dedication and hard work over

the past year in ensuring Comanche Troop

remained the best. Your friendship and

laughter will be missed dearly within our

ranks, and without question every Comanche

Trooper wishes you two the best on your

future endeavors.

The Comanche Troop family readiness group is busting out their secret recipe books for an upcoming bake sale. The ladies are busy making cookies and cupcakes to be sold in the Clear Creek PX on 29 March in support of the Troop. This will be a one day event so don’t miss out. From every Comanche Troop Soldier, thank you for all the support and we wish you the best on the sale.

Well, with another month behind us,

the future continues to get brighter. Soldiers

are more excited than ever to be training for

gunnery, knowing it won’t be much longer

until we start packing our bags. Until next

DARKHORSE


March became an eventful month for Darkhorse Troop. Unfortunately, after an undefeated season, the Darkhorse Troop Basketball team lost in the camp semi-finals. A tough loss, but a great job by all the members of our team. Our biggest project for the month was to increase our partnership with the Kuwaiti Army. Darkhorse Soldiers have been working with our partnered Kuwaiti Army Logistics Battalion throughout the month. Our Soldiers have conducted a series of professional exchanges and partnered training events to learn about the Kuwaiti Army and culture with us sharing about America and the US Army. The Darkhorse Soldiers have been doing an excellent job as ambassadors for America, while working with the Kuwaitis. The professionalism and enthusiasm Darkhorse Soldiers has shown during this partnership helped to build a better relationship with our Kuwaiti Allies and projected a positive image of the United States. We have also been gearing up to support a number of training events next month including: Bradley gunnery, mortar gunnery, and a series of maneuver exercises by the reconnaissance troops. Our cooks will be excited to finally break out their kitchen and do some cooking to support these events. The mechanics have been hard at work with annual services on vehicles and equipment to get them ready for these events. The S&T platoon has been conducting extensive drivers training on our big trucks to get ready, too. On the officer side of the Troop, we said farewell to LT Hope Tucci, who has moved over to the 115th BSB as her year in the executive officer slot at Darkhorse completed. We also shifted LT Ybarra to be the S&T Platoon Leader, LT Klein to be the Executive Officer, LT Van Engel to be the Maintenance Platoon Leader, and completed the switches by welcoming LT Matt Mott from the 115th BSB to be the new Maintenance Control Officer. Additionally this month, SGT Shannon headed back to the States to begin his transition out of the Army. SGT Shannon, thanks for your service and good luck on the outside. Unfortunately, we also moved SGT Martinez back to rear detachment as he gets treated for a medical issue. Please keep SGT Martinez and his Family in your thoughts and prayers. Greetings from Fort Hood! The last month

has been a productive one. The Echo Troop

Soldiers continue to focus upon the

maintenance of equipment and facilities as

we continue preparation for the Squadron’s

eventual return. The Rear Detachment

executed a III Corps Environmental Audit,

passing with flying colors. This continues a

trend we have succeeded within for over the

last year, as we ensure the Squadron meets

or exceeds environmental expectation and

requirements. The Army is focused on being

a good steward for the environment, with

much of the work to support the upcoming

NetZero initiative that is occurring across Fort

Hood community.

The FRG Steering Committee developed a

great opportunity to conduct its monthly

meeting with LTC Southerland during his

R&R from down range. The SCO provided

an operational update, shared with the FRG

Leadership the accomplishments of the

Soldiers in Iraq and Kuwait, and gave an

update on what the Squadron will be doing

over the next couple of months. The wrap up

focused on ensuring the Squadron and Troop

Command messages are getting out to all of

our Families. We must keep working to

ensure our rosters are accurate as we

prepare the systems to notify Families when

their Soldier arrives on Fort Hood from down

range.

Family members have been preparing for the

upcoming Fort Hood Job Fair being held on

28 March in Club Hood on the east side of

post. These events have been an ongoing

initiative supported by the Army Chief of Staff

for Soldiers preparing to transition into the

civilian work force.

With this event, called “Hiring Our Heroes,”

the U.S. Chamber of Commerce will host a

Military Spouse hiring fair. This event will be

covered by the Today show on NBC, and is

focused on showcasing the amazing quality

of our Soldier’s Family members and the

value they can bring to the civilian work force.

1-7 CAV conducted their first sports day on 10 March 2012 on Camp Buehring, Kuwait. The day included: soccer, 4x400 relay, volleyball, Cross Fit, dodge ball, and tug of war between the Troops. The Troops competed for the 1st place prize in each individual event with the opportunity to talk some “smack” with their victories. The day culminated with the eventual overall 1st place trophy for the entire sports day going to Blackhawk Troop. Congratulations, Blackhawk Troop on the victory!

The day provided the Soldiers an opportunity to see another side of their fellow battle buddies during these competitions. With the outstanding training and missions conducted by the squadron throughout the train up and current deployment, the sports day allowed a “break in the action” from the daily grind and gave the Soldiers and awesome time on the sports field. GARRYOWEN!!

Over 400 Soldiers from the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division competed for the prized Expert Infantry Badge (EIB) during the final week of the month. As the week progressed, the Soldiers continued to develop their skills and techniques for the coveted award. After the dust settled, only 84 Soldiers from the brigade completed the event. The 1-7 CAV family wants to congratulate three outstanding Soldiers from their ranks who completed the week long training to earn the EIB.

It’s madness!! With one of the greatest

sporting events taking place in March,

college basketball shot its way into our lives.

From watching the games, to enjoying our

picked brackets, the Soldiers lifted their

morale with some fun sporting activities. On

top of the tournament, GARRYOWEN

competed on the dusty, sands of Kuwait

with a sports day. From soccer, volleyball,

4x400 relay, dodge ball, Cross Fit, and tug

of war, the competition brought a desire to

bring home the prizes for each Troop.

With these sports, we experienced another

aspect of the deployment. These events

brought a developing bond of fun and

friendship within our ranks. This bond will

continue to develop our unit for upcoming

trainings and times with our families during

and after the deployment. As we stretch

into the final quarter of the deployment, look

into ways you can accomplish something

different in your life. What goal slipped

away during the previous months? Let us

examine our lives to see how we can

change up the setting and slam dunk a fresh

bond into our family, friends, and fellow

Soldiers. GARRYOWEN!!

The 1st Battle Group, 7th Cavalry was reorganized as the 1st Battalion 7th Cavalry on 1 September 1963. From 1965 through 1973 the battalion saw service in South Vietnam and is most remembered for its victory in the Ia Drang Valley in Pleiku province where, for four intense and desperate days of combat, the under-strength 1st Battalion 7th Cavalry fought three regiments of NVA in November of 1965. This event was chronicled in the book "We were Soldiers Once. and Young" written by LTG (R) Hal Moore, who commanded the battalion during the battle and reporter Joe E. Galloway.
