Gasholder Remediation , Southern England
Eneotech Environmental were employed by Calor Gas
Properties Ltd. to undertake the remediation of a former
gasholder site under the supervision of MJCA (MJ Carter
Associates).
During decommissioning of the gasholder many years
ago, demolition waste was used to fill the deep void left
between the foundation walls. The demolition waste and
basal sludges infilling the annulus space had to be
excavated due to the level of contamination present. All
arisings were sent directly to landfill for disposal.
Eneotech used a pole excavator with a grab bucket to
remove the material from in between the gasholder
foundations. This specialist plant was required as the
standard back-acting excavator could not reach the full
depth of the excavation due to the radius on the
foundation walls. The pole excavator could drop vertically
in the annulus space reaching the base of the
foundations. Excavated material was then taken of site
to a hazardous waste landfill.
The open excavation was backfilled with imported
crushed concrete. Compaction was achieved during the
backfilling process by mechanical compaction using a
remote controlled tamden roller within the confined
space. To minimise the risk of collapse of the two
foundation walls material was backfilled into the spaces
immediately after the excavation.
In order to avoid re-contamination of the backfill
contaminated water was removed from the annulus using
a hydraulic pump. The use of this type of pump was due
to the potentially explosive atmosphere of the excavation
site. Contaminated water was passed through a
Eneotech owned treatment plant designed specifically for
the likely contaminants (dissolve methane, BTEX
solvents etc).
Eneotech Environmental Ltd. provides a wide range of
waste management techniques enabling the regeneration
and redevelopment of contaminated land. We offer a full
range of technologies including water treatment, sludge
handling and dewatering, soil washing, thermal
desorption, soil vapour extraction, air sparging,
