Take it PersonallyThe Project Cornerstone parent workshop, Take it Personally, will be held at Garden Gate on six consecutive Wednesdaysbeginning September 27 at 8:10 am. The group will meet in the Garden Gate Staff Room. Please see the flyer posted onthe Office window, or contact the school office for more information.

Dismissal TimeParents, please remember the designated area on campus where wed like you to wait for your 4th or 5th grade student tobe released from class: the snack tables in front of the Caf Window. Please do not wait in the hallways, as low noise, such as conversation can be disruptive to classes still in session. Similarly, for safety and security reasons, children are notpermitted to play on the play structures or the blacktop areas after school. Instead, please have your children wait, seated, with you. The Garden Gate Staff appreciates your support with maintaining our learning environment and keeping studentssafe.

Traffic and Parking LotStudent safety is our first priority. Follow these simple rules to ensure student safety: Always drop offalong the curb. Do not allow your child to exit the car in the parking lot alone and attempt to walk acrossthe lot. The curb is a no parking anytime zone. Drivers must remain in their vehicles. Drivers wholeave their vehicles unattended could be ticketed by the Sheriffs Department. Always cross at a cross

walk. Hold your childs hand and teach your child to always look both ways. Avoid getting stuck in traffic.Leave home earlier to make sure your child arrives to school on time. Students may be on campus

beginning at 7:45am.Concerned NeighborsThe Garden Gate Office recently took a phone call from an upset neighbor. The neighbor stated that she, and other parentsin the neighborhood, were frustrated that Garden Gate parents had parked their vehicles on the street in a manner thatblocked their home driveways. The Sheriffs Department has been alerted to this problem, and action may be taken againstthose who park on the street, blocking a driveway. Similarly, neighbors have reported destruction to their fences and plantson their property, along the Greenleaf sidewalk. Please encourage Garden Gate parents and students to respect the homeof residents in our neighborhood.

Start the School Year Off Right with Back-To-School RoutinesIn most families, summer is a time when parents take a more relaxed approach. But now school has started again. Thatmeans it is time to re-introduce the routines that will make your family run smoothly again. These same routines, researchshows, can also help children do better in school. Begin by talking with your child. What parts of the day were the toughestlast year? Did she find herself racing for the bus? Did she often get to school without something she needed?Once your child sees how some changes can actually make her life easier, you can embark on a plan. Dont start by sayingyoure going to change everythingfocus on just one or two things that can make a real difference. For example, establish a routine for what your child must do before bedtime. Thats the time she should pick out (and try onher outfit for tomorrow, make sure her math homework is in her folder ... her folder is in her back- pack ... and the backpack

is by the door. Then make sure everyone goes to bed at a reasonable hour. Youll have a happier and more stress-freemorning. And your child will be relaxed and ready to learn when she gets to school.Source: Michigan Department of Education, What Research Says About Parent Involvement in Childrens Education,www.michigan.gov/documents/Final_Parent_ Involvement_Fact_Sheet_14732_7.pdf.

PropellersDo you wonder how to connect better with your children? Do you wonder what matters to them, and how you can assistthem to grow up to be healthy, caring and responsible citizens? I encourage you to try a "propeller" - a question intended tospark conversations with your children. Try it around the dinner table tonight! This week's Propeller: What are the worst problems in the world today that you wish you could do somethingabout?
