    After over 40 years of teaching (30+ at Garden Gate ElementarySchool), Ms. Mariana Alwell will be retiring. All of the students,families, and staff will miss her. She has done so much for all ofus. Come and wish her a fond farewell and let her know howmuch she has meant to our community.

    GARDEN GATES INTERMEDIATE BAND - A SWEEP OF AWARDS!Congratulations to the members of Garden Gates Intermediate Band and their very able director,Keith Pennings. On Saturday, May 1st, the Intermediate Band performed at a band competition held atMilpitas High School. Our student band won the Esprit De Corps Award, the Elementary School ConcertBand First Place, and the award for the Overall Elementary School Concert Band! Congratulations to our

    very talented and enthusiastic students and Mr. Pennings! What a wonderful day for them and us!

    SCHOOL SITE NOMINATIONS ARE NEEDEDPlease see the following article and nominate yourself or someone you know to serve on the School Site Council for nextyear. To date, we have not received any nominations and it is necesssary to have these positions filled. Your kindconsideration is appreciated.

    SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL SEEKS NOMINATIONSThe School Site Council (SSC) is asking for nominations for two parent positions on the SSC for next school year.The SSC develops and monitors the School Plan and School Based Coordinated Program Budgets. The SSC is agreat way to be involved and to give input to our school programs. Our SSC is comprised of an equal number of staffand parent representatives. The meetings are held once a month after school. If you are interested in serving on theSSC, or if there is someone you would like to nominate, please complete the information below and return the form toschool by May 27th.     WE DID IT! TFIN WAS A SUCCESS!We saved our teachers, we saved our small class sizes and we saved the cohesiveness ofour teacher groups! Congratulations to Sophia Chan who lead our Garden Gate effort!Congratulations to our Garden Gate Community! Congratulations to our community atlarge, the businesses and people that have shown their priorities!

    Now our teachers can relax and focus on teaching instead of wondering what will happen!Welcome back before you ever had to leave! This is Staff Appreciation Week; I cannot think of a better announcementto show our true appreciation!

    GARDEN GATE WALK-A-ROUND STATUS UPDATE$15,290.41 RAISED FROM THE WALK-A-ROUND!

    Even with so many of us digging deep in our pockets to save our teachers, we still were able to support the GardenGate Walk-A-Round. All of money raised from the Walk-A-Round stays here at Garden Gate School to fund projectsfor our kids! The kids had a chance to place their raffle tickets in the boxes this week and the raffle drawing was heldwith a lot of excitement on Wednesday, May 19th. Congratulations to our lucky winners!

    PTA BUDGET COMMITTEE MEETINGOn Friday, May 21st the budget committee will be meeting to create the PTA budget for the next school year. We willreview the preliminary budget at the June 3rd PTA meeting. If you interested in knowing how we plan to spend yourmoney, please plan to attend.

    FUN-IN-THE-SUN!Fun-In-The-Sun is one of our most fun events and it will be taking place on Tuesday, June 1stfrom 2:00 - 3:30 on the school grounds and it is FREE! Merav Talmor is looking forvolunteers for this event, so if you have some time, please plan to assist with this year-endcelebration or at least please plan to attend! We will have games, a Splash Down, andpopsicles too! I hope to see you there!

    OST LIBRARY BOOKSAll Library books must be turned in byWednesday, May 26th.

    lease take a moment and search under the beds andn students bookshelves for any overdue books fromhe library or lost classroom textbooks. You will beeceiving a notification from Mrs. Gokhale regardingny books that have not been returned. If your childannot find the book, they will be charged for the lostook. Books are very expensive and we cannot affordo absorb the cost of lost or destroyed books.

    tudents will not receive a report card until allbrary charges are paid. If the book is found afterou have paid, your money will be refunded. Thankou for your understanding regarding this matter.

    LOST AND FOUNDBe sure to have your children check for lost items in our Lostand Found area located behind the administrative building.Remind your child that it often takes a few days for an itemto find its way to the Lost and Found, so checking more thanonce is recommended. Lost non-clothing items, such asglasses, keys, and jewelry, can be found in the office.Please remember to label your childrens clothing and lunchboxes. This will help us return lost items. Any clothing itemsremaining after June 10th will be donated to a local charity.

    SUMMER FLYERS ARE AVAILABLE IN THESCHOOL OFFICEThe school office has many pamphlets and fliersfrom several organizations offering activities andprograms for students over the summer. Theyinclude: Athletic opportunities, summer enrichment

    programs, camps, etc. If you are interested inreceiving any of these, please stop by the schooloffice.

    NURSES NOTES: MEDICATIONIN THE HEALTH OFFICEJODI QUINTON, PHNIf you have stored your childs medicationsin the school health office, please makearrangements to take them home on thelast day of school. Any medication that remains after the

    close of school will be discarded. If your children areattending summer school and will need the medicationduring the shortened day, please take it to that school sitesmain office on the first day of classes.

    If it will be necessary for your child to receive medicationduring the school day next year, please pick up a blueMedication Authorization form at the school office before thelast day of school.

    In order for either prescription or over-the-countermedications to be given at school, both the doctor and theparent must sign the form. When completed, bring theMedication Administration form and the medication (in the

    original container) to the secretaries in the school office.Have a happy and healthy summer.

    010-2011 SCHOOL YEAR FURLOUGH DAYSn response to the unprecedented reductions in education funding from the state all district employees

    ave agreed to a temporary work year reduction of five days for the 2010-2011 school year. Thisepresents $2.5 million in salary savings, which will help minimize the severity of employee layoffs andessen the impact of budget cuts on the districts education programs. This furlough agreement onlypplies for next year. As a result, next years school calendar will be adjusted with the followingurlough days:

    November 22 and 23, 2010 (the first 2 days of the week of Thanksgiving) The last 3 days of school:

    o June 8, 9, and 10, 2011 (all schools except Murdock-Portal Elementary School)o June 15, 16, and 17, 2011 (for Murdock-Portal Elementary School)

    After much consideration, both of these blocks of time were selected to minimize the impact onlassroom instruction. Specifically, the district traditionally experiences abnormally high absence ratesuring the two days of school held during the week of Thanksgiving.THEIR FUTURE IS NOW!
