Every year the Globe Guilders proudly bring this highly antici-pated couture event to San Diego in conjunction with Neiman Marcus to support The Old Globe. This year the Globe Guilders Fashion Show is honoring Peggy Matthews as a beacon of fashion and longtime supporter of The Old Globe. Fashion informed most of Peggy’s life, 17 years of which she spent as an editor at Mademoiselle Magazine. As part of her responsibilities, she traveled across America to stage fashion events. She mingled with iconic couturiers and also en-thusiastically worked with student fashion organizations. Based in Chicago, she became Midwest Editor of Mademoiselle. After she retired, she and her husband Bob moved to San Diego, where she was persuaded to accept the position of Regional Pro-motions Director for the Broadway department store. She was a consummate volunteer managing publicity for a myriad of or-ganizations here in San Diego. With her background deeply im-bedded in fashion, the fact that Peggy gave generous monetary gifts to the Globe Guilders and The Old Globe costume depart-ment surprises no one. Hats off to Peggy! At the event, guests will be greeted with a champagne reception and enjoy live and silent auctions, a delicious lunch, and of course, the beautiful fashion show featuring tip to toe fashions, forecasting the key themes to watch for and to have in your wardrobe now and in the coming season. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

This year is flying by for me. What about you? We are already in the busiest time of the year at the Globe with a production on all three stages. I hope you have a chance to enjoy all the wonderful shows being presented this sum-mer. I am looking forward to see-ing them all.

We had a perfect day for the June 8th luncheon at the Town and Country Resort. The outdoor pa-vilion was beautifully decorated in similar colors to this year’s fashion show and the vendors proved too much for me to resist. Many thanks to Chair, Wendy Ledford, and her talented com-mittee for creating another suc-cessful event. We welcomed Managing Director, Tim Shields, who gave us an overview of all the Globe activities. His presen-tation was so interesting, I prom-ise to ask him to come back. Meet and Greet events for Native Gardens (5/1), The Tempest (5/15), The Lorax (6/26), Barefoot in The Park (7/2) Much Ado (7/10) and Heart of Rock and Roll (7/31) were heartily provided for by the untiring efforts of Judy McMorrow and Maggie Acosta and their merry band of support-

ers. Thank you for welcoming so many artists and making it look so easy! We enjoyed a very special sea-son preview from Barry Edelstein on June 27. The Old Globe wel-comed over 100 Guilders and friends with wine and appetizers. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn how the season is devel-oped and learn about the shows coming up. My personal thanks to Barry for his presentation. Please enjoy reading all the latest in this Gazette and look for all the fun events coming up. In the meantime, I will see you at Cele-brating Couture on August 16!

Warm regards,

Kim Neapole

Sekeres, Ticket Sales; Gail Dill, Invitations and Table Tents; Joydelee Marrow and Gigi Cramer, Reservations/Check In; and Bonnie Wright, Mailing/Drawing Set Up/Money Hat; VP So-cial Lynn Silva, moral support. Timothy J. Shields, the Globe’s Man-aging Director, was our speaker. Pam and Joydelee very cleverly sold the centerpieces. And Joydelee did such an organized job with reserva-tions! Gail put my idea of table tents to work and they were lovely. We made a whopping $1,600 plus for the Globe. Thanks to all who helped make it such a success.

NEWS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE

LETTER FROM BARRY AND TIM Dear Globe Guilders,

It has been a fantastic summer of enchantment at The Old Globe, as we celebrate new productions and the return of many friends – esteemed actors, directors and costume de-signers who have been a part of past Globe productions and whom we are thrilled to welcome back.

The Tempest – starring the incomparable Kate Burton and featuring a cast of Globe veterans, including Philippe Bowgen, Manoel Felciano, Robert Dorfman, and Associate Artist Robert Foxworth – launched our Shakespeare Festival in June. Everyone’s favorite storyteller, Dr. Seuss, is back with the story of a grumpy but lovable creature who fights to protect the trees in Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax. And two beloved romantic comedies preparing to take the stage next will be directed by Globe favorites: Jessica Stone, who last summer staged Ken Ludwig’s Robin Hood!, directs Barefoot in the Park; and Tony-Award winner Kathleen Marshall, who directed 2016’s Love’s Labor’s Lost, returns to direct Much Ado About Nothing.

Darlene Gould Davies is another close friend of the Globe whom we are honored to celebrate. Darlene, whose Globe involvement began at age 11, has served in many capacities at the thea-tre, including as an actor, usher, Gala chair, writer, lecturer, donor, and Board member. From 2012 until this year, Darlene served as the Globe’s historian, collecting, archiving, and writing about the Globe’s rich history of artists, productions, and work in the community. She has just stepped down from this position, and she will be sorely missed.

Darlene penned over 150 Globe “history moments,” curated the 2017 exhibition Muses of The Old Globe at the Women’s Museum of California, and has earned many First Place and Best of Show awards from the San Diego Press Club, two of which were for articles about the Globe.

Few individuals have exhibited such commitment and passion for the story, impact, and mission of the Globe as has Darlene. We thank and applaud her dedication and service.

As we head into August, we thank you again, Globe Guilders, for all that you do, and we wish you a wonderful summer!

With gratitude, Barry Edelstein Timothy J. Shields Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Managing Director

Jane Cowgill and Judi Menzel organized a Mexican food-themed party at the home of Judy McMorrow, inviting Guilder Moms and Dads to celebrate the accomplishments of these talented artists. Both classes, 2018 and 2019, attended.

The highlight of the party was the presentation to each graduate of the stole to be worn on graduation. Guilder Marguerite Jack-son Dill once again made these seven stoles from black satin, with gold tassels and embroidered with USD 2018 and MFA be-neath The Old Globe logo. Marguerite has agreed to continue this tradition for the Class of 2019.

This summer, the graduates, and now second-year students, are busy in their roles and understudy roles in Much Ado About Nothing at the Lowell Davies Festival Stage, running until September 16.

Upcoming MFA Production The MFA fall show will be Julius Caesar. This production will run in The Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre from October 10-28.
