History Period Study: De Stijl

De Stijl was a Dutch artistic movement founded in 1917 to 1931 in Netherlands.

De Stijl is also the name of a journal that was published by the Dutch painter, designer, writer, and critic “Theo van Doesburg” that served to spread the group's theories

He was an important contributor to the De Stijl art movement and group.

He developed a non-representational form of art which he named neoplasticism.

This consisted of white ground, upon which was painted a grid of vertical and horizontal black lines and the three primary colors.

Impact

What influenced me in this artistic movement and Piet Mondrian art is that it promoted pure abstraction by a reduction to the essentials

of form and color, they simplified visual compositions to the vertical and horizontal directions, and used only primary colors “red, blue and

yellow” along with black and white.
