Highland courses taught at the high school have the identical course content of courses offered on campus, online, and in our regional classes. Classes are evaluated by the Highland DirectorofConcurrentEnrollmentandtheVicePresidentofAcademicAffairsbeforebeingimplementedatthehighschool.FacultyareevaluatedandmustmeettheKansasBoardofRegents criteria. Students interested in participating in the pro-gram should contact their concurrent coordinator or Sara Smith, the Highland Director of Concurrent Enrollment, for additional information and details on the enrollment process.

Concurrent Enrollment Defined: TheKansasBoardofRegents(KBOR)encourageshighschoolstudentstotakeadvantage of postsecondary education opportunities by enrolling in college courses while still in high school. The statute commonlyisknownasConcurrentEnrollmentofHighSchoolStudentsinEligiblePostsecondaryInstitutions.

Highland’sConcurrentProgram–takingcollegeclassesinthehigh school setting -- is a great opportunity for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors approved by their principal to experience college while they are still in high school. Students whochoosetheConcurrentProgramlearnfirst-handthedemands of going to college. They experience the process of enrolling in college classes and get a feel for the costs associatedwithcollege:tuition, fees, andtextbooks.TheConcurrent Program experience eases a student’s transition from high school to college and provides academic enrichment to students who are ready for the challenge of college course-work.Participationintheprogramexposesstudents(andtheirfamilies) to valuable learning lessons that will support a student’s remaining college career. Students who choose collegewhileinhighschoolmaymakeconsiderableprogresstoward their college education if the appropriate time and focus is given to their studies. Highland classes are offered at affordable rates when compared to state universities, and students enjoy accessibility to instructors within small classroom settings.
