Military service was always heldin high esteem as a way out, away up and a way ahead in ourcommunities. When we remembergrowing up in Kansas City,

Missouri, and Crystal Springs,Mississippi, we can see almostthrough a storybook lens, thegatherings of men rounding up,almost saddling up, preparing togo to serve.

In Kansas City, in the 50s,elders in the neighborhood meaning adults who were as oldas 24 and up would assemble atthe National Guard Armory where

they formed a company that, asfar as we youngsters knew, couldand would do whatever it took tokeep our country, even with itsmany, many imperfections, safeand free.

There was a certain pride andconfidence in seeing Mr. Conley, the mailman, a neighbor and oneof your best friendsdad, suited inarmy fatigues, moving troopers

with the same efficiency andreliability he put into moving themail, day after day. It was great tosee a grade school teacher, settingout for his two-week summerdeployment, managing men withthe same facility and intensity hedeployed in managing the lives ofstudents in our communityschool. These men, mounted ontheir jeeps and troop transport

canvass covered trucks, were notjust patriots and heroes, they wereour parents, uncles, cousins andour neighbors. They were ourparents friends. Some drovetrucks for a living. Some dugditches. Some worked infactories. Some were tradesman, craftsmen, educators,

On the other hand, if you arrivefrom Latin America or another

RALEIGH (NNPA) - Despitenarrowing pre-primary polls,

withering negative nationalheadlines and a relentless assault byhis fierce Democratic opponent,North Carolina put Sen. BarackObamas historic bid for thepresidency firmly back in thedrivers seat last Tuesday with acommanding 56-42 primary victoryover Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton ofNew York.

There were those who weresaying that North Carolina could be agame-changer. But today, whatNorth Carolina decided is that theonly game that needs changing is the

one in Washington, DC, the AfricanAmerican candidate, with his

beaming wife, Michelle looking on,said to over 3,000 cheeringsupporters Tuesday night in NorthCarolina State Universitys ReynoldsColiseum.

I want to thank the people ofNorth Carolina for giving us avictory in a big state, Obamacontinued, a swing state, and a statewhere we will compete to win if I amthe Democratic nominee forPresident of the United States.

Winning the lions share ofNorth Carolinas 115 pledgeddelegates, in addition to the popular

vote, made losing the Indianaprimary 51-49 percent in a squeaker

Obamas impressive NorthCarolina triumph wounded Clintonsclaim that she is the surging, mostviable Democratic presidentialcandidate to face presumptiveRepublican nominee Sen. JohnMcCain in November, despiteObamas frontrunner status andinsurmountable pledged delegatelead.

The recipe for record US gasolineprices goes like this: Take a tight oilsupply and growing world demand.Add a falling dollar and lots ofinvestment money flowing into oil andother commodities.

Finish with market turbulencecaused by the annual switch fromwinter to summer gasoline blends. Theresult: an average US retail price forregular of more than $3.60 a gallon. Will gasoline stay that high? At least

through the summer, say experts. Atthe margin, pump prices may nowdepend on currency fluctuations andfinancial speculators as much as ontraditional economics.

The old fundamentals thebalance between demand and supply still matter, but it is these new factorsthat are the driving force behind the

    professionals and ministers.In Crystal Springs,

Mississippi, in the 40s and in the60s and 70s, our families and ourcommunities yielded some of thehighest recruitment enlistmentrates in the nation. Uncle PaulFord and Uncle John Ford, Jr.were part of The GreatestGeneration. Cousin Paul Ford,Jr., was a Vietnam era Armyparatrooper. Cousin Dwight Fordand Cousin Michael Ford wereMarines. Dwight Ford, Jr., in thenext generation was a DesertStorm era Marine.

From The Greatest Generationto the Vietnam War Era to theGulf War Era, our families, ourneighbors have always answered

the call to service, and havealways served with honor anddistinction. But it was more than justanswering a call.

For we embraced militaryservice, like all young Americansdo, as a gateway to responsibleadulthood and citizenship and asa ticket to adventure in marvelousworld.

Military service was alwaysboth depersonalizing and at thesame time, highly personal. Theidea, of course, is that the trainingdisplaces the inherent sense of

self-importance and selfishindividualism. The trainingnurtures self-reliance andpersonal achievement within the

context of cooperation, interdependence, and sharedcommitment to duty and values.

Our families knew the valueof the military service in themaking of men and women. Wetook pride in supporting thosewho stepped forward to serve.

According to General WilliamScott Wallace, CommandingGeneral, United States ArmyTraining and Doctrine Command(TRADOC) at Fort Monroe, VA,development of that sense ofpurpose, pride, confidence andcapability remains the foundationfor the Army. The small cartoon on the Tax PolicyCenters website shows a manshead with a gaping hole through itand the words Stupid Tax Trick. The words refer to the proposal byRepublican Sen. John McCain tosuspend the 18.4 cents per gallonfederal excise tax on gasolinebetween Memorial Day and LaborDay.

The presumptive Republicanpresidential nominees suggestionwas quickly picked up by Sen.Hillary Rodham Clinton, campaigning for the Democraticnomination. The idea, however, died a quick death in the Senate lastweek at the hands of a Democraticcaucus drafting a bill aimed atgiving relief from soaring gasprices. To many economists andothers, the short tax holiday didntmake much sense. Its a terrible idea, says economist

Eric Toter, coauthor of the articlethat accompanied the cartoon andwas headlined, What Were TheyThinking???

Undoubtedly, they werethinking politics. A new survey bythe Kaiser Family Foundation foundthat paying for gasoline easily topsthe list of economic woes seen byAmerican families. Some 44percent of those surveyed saw theirgas bills as a serious problem. Its out of the political panderingplaybook, says Robert Bixby,

executive director of the ConcordCoalition, a nonpartisan

organization pushing forelimination of the federal budgetdeficit.

Sen. Barack Obama, SenatorClintons rival for the Democraticnomination, did reject the idea. Onthis issue, hes the only one that

looks like a grown-up, said Bixby.Heres why critics say the gasoline-tax holiday plan is a bad idea:

It wouldnt save the averageconsumer much money. If a driveruses 10 gallons a week, he or shewould save about $26 during thethree months enough to buy sevenor eight milkshakes. A driver with along commute to work would, potentially, save more. So would thetruck drivers who were circling theCapitol in a horn-blaring caravan

last week, angered by the 24.4 centsper gallon tax on diesel fuel.

The problem, said Toter, is thatthe cheaper fuel would encourageAmericans to drive more. The endresult after increased summerdemand stretches American refiningcapacity to the limit would beeven higher prices.

It wouldnt do anything forthe consumer, Toter concluded. Itwould just boost the already recordprofits of refiners and oilcompanies.

An econometic analysis by JeffPerloff, an economist at theUniversity of California, Berkeley,is not so harsh. Drivers might savenine to 12 cents a gallon despite therising demand, he reckons.

The gas-tax break would donothing about United States

dependence on imported oil, or, forthat matter, on a limited supply ofdomestic oil. Contrariwise, it wouldadd to consumption and to global-warming emissions. We are the laughing stock toEurope because we keep [gasoline]taxes so cheap, notes MatthewSimmons, chairman of a Houston-based investment bank for theenergy industry, Simmons & Co.International.

The state gasoline tax, whichranges as high as 32.1 cents inWisconsin and as low as eight cents

in Alaska, averages 28.6 cents agallon. So, add in the federal tax,and the average tax totals 47 centsway low by European standards. In Germany, for example, gas istaxed at about $2 per gallon.

Only last January, a bipartisancommission appointed by Congressrecommended a 40-cent boost overfive years in the federal gas tax withrevenues used to improve thenations transportation system.

The tax break would add to thefederal deficit. Gas-tax revenuesnormally go to the Highway TrustFund, which is used to maintain and

improve the highway and publictransit systems. One proposal inCongress would have substitutedTreasury revenues for the lost HTFmoney.

The change would be anadministrative nightmare for thenations retail sellers of gasoline. It would be a logistical challenge, says Jeff Lenard, spokesman for theconvenience stores that sell 80percent of the nations gasolinesupply.

    At this time, Republicans and

Democrats are busily trying toblame each other for the troublinghigh gas prices. For instance, sometimes more than once a dayHouse Republican Leader JohnBoehner issues a press releaseteasing Speaker Nancy Pelosi fornot presenting her long-promisedcommon sense plan to lower gasprices.

For now, Washington is lookingfor other ways to hold downgasoline prices. One popular idea isto stop filling the StrategicPetroleum Reserve. At present itcontains 701 million barrels, enough with private oil company

reserves to substitute for importedoil for 118 days. It is being filled ata rate of 70,000 barrels daily, not ahefty amount compared withimports of 10.1 million barrels aday.

We are addicted to petroleum,a source of energy which isgradually going to disappear, warns Michael Klare, who teachesinternational affairs at HampshireCollege in Amherst, Mass. He saysthe US must really work onalternative energy sources.Thats not a short-term solution.

As commander of the U.S. Army's 5th Corps, General Wallace led the Army forces in the allied invasion of Iraq. He discusses the level of Iraqi

resistance encountered, the issue of allied force flow, and some of the key events, such as the breakthrough in the Karbala Gap in preparation

for the advance on Baghdad. He recalled the point at which "we broke the back of the regime" and the postwar shock of realizing that, "when

[we] decapitated the regime, everything below it fell apart." Wallace commanded V Corps during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was the

Commanding General of the Combined Arms Command (CAC) and Fort Leavenworth in Kansas. He commanded the Joint War-fighting Center

of the market can be seen in the factthat on May 1 Exxon Mobil Corp.reported first quarter net income of$10.89 billion its highest ever.

Average US retail gas prices haverisen for five weeks in a row, accordingto the Energy InformationAdministrations latest availablefigures. At $3.60 per gallon, theaverage price of a gallon of regular hasnow spiked 21.4 cents since April 14.Looking back a bit further, gas priceshave climbed over $1.40 a gallon in 18

months. Sure, China and India aregetting richer and their citizens areusing more petroleum. But haseveryone in Guangzhou purchased aCadillac Escalade since, say, March?

The market has gone [so high] fora variety of reasons, some of which arefundamental, and some of which arespeculative, says Amy Myers Jaffe, a

fellow in energy studies at the JamesA. Baker III Institute for Public Policyat Rice University.

Perhaps the most fundamental ofthe fundamentals is supply specifically, a flattening in the growthof available oil reserves.Throughout the 1980s and 1990s,increases in demand for petroleumproducts were quicklycounterbalanced by the appearance ofnew sources of supply, say experts.

That pace since has slowed. Newfields are still being discovered, inBrazil and other places around theglobe, but it takes a long time to makethem operational. Meanwhile, the end

of the era of cheap and easy oilextraction may be coming.

Since 2000, we have hit a moremature period in terms of supply. Atthe same time, weve had the demandshock come into play, says DavidPumphrey, deputy director of theenergy and national security programat the Center for Strategic and

International Studies.Global economic expansion hasresulted in a world demand for oil thathas been rising steadily and hasproved remarkably resilient in the faceof high prices.

According to Cambridge EnergyResearch Associates, world oildemand will increase a further 1.3million barrels per day in 2008, withAsia and the Middle East accountingfor 800,000 barrels per day of thatgrowth.

To put that figure in context, theUS consumes about 20.6 millionbarrels per day, or roughly 25 percentof global demand. China is the second-

largest consumer, at 7.2 million barrelsper day. Japan, with 5.2 million barrelsper day, is third.High gas prices have dampeneddemand somewhat, but not as much asmight be expected, according to Jeroenvan der Veer, chief executive officer ofRoyal Dutch Shell.

    The demand reaction to continued

high prices might be a delayed one, said van der Veer at a recentsymposium at the Council on ForeignRelations. We think it may happenthat people wont drive less, but thatnext time they buy a car they will buya more fuel-efficient car, he said. Then there are the reasons for highprices that fall under the speculativecategory referred to by Myers Jaffe.Prime among these is the fall in thevalue of the dollar relative to othercurrencies. Oil is denominated indollars, so that if the dollar becomescheaper relative to, say, the euro, producers need higher prices if theirglobal purchasing power is to remain

    the same.This phenomenon may have

accounted for as much as one-third ofthe rise in price of a barrel of oil sinceDecember 2000, according to BakerInstitute calculations. With worldstock markets volatile, and the UScredit crisis leading to unpredictableeffects around the world, investment

money is also flowing into oil andother commodities, which are seen asmore stable, safe bets. This puts furtherupward pressure on a barrels price.

The total effect of these financialpressures is a matter of some disputeamong experts. Many OPEC nations, for instance, blame financialspeculation for much of the recentincrease. Others hold that the marketbelieves supplies will remain tight forsome time to come meaningfundamentals remain the most

important oil price pressure. Will prices stay high? That

depends in part on the prospect ofgeopolitical events, such as unrest inNigeria, that can cause spikes.Pumphrey says, we are looking atprices above $100 [a barrel of oil] forthe rest of the year. Myers Jaffe saysthe price reflects a bubble and thatthe market is due for a correction.

globalization that connectscommunities and nations. Internetmakes information at and fromthe battlefield instantly available. The technology means that peoplearound the world are aware ofwhat they lack. They are aware of

what they dont have, and theywant those things, now, he said. That means intensified

competition for resources likefuel, food and water. Wallacesaid, Indian super-company Tata, recently announced it willmanufacture and sell at $2,500automobile. Indias populationexceeds 1 billion. What will theavailability of low-cost cars dofor oil consumption for fuel heasked. Water will be as precious aresource as oil, particularly as60% of the planets populationbecomes urban, rather than rural.Right now, there are 15megacities each with populationsof over 10 million, and eight ofthem are situated on geologicfault lines. It is questionable

whether any have sufficientresources to maintain their rate of

growth, he said.Juxtapose the webbing of

cities and towns into megacities, with the reality that there are

many ungoverned spaces on theplanet. Such places, Wallace said,

are ripe for radical ideologies.Wallace said there are also

    ungoverned spaces in somemegacities.

Wallace quoted former USintelligence chief William Casey

in describing the decades ahead asan era of persistent conflict. He

said the next several decadescould be decades of conflict and

confrontation. Against thatbackdrop, todays Army forges itsmission, he said.

But there is a problem ofreadiness and fitness for militaryservice that the nation mustaddress, Wallace said. There are31.5 million youth of militaryservice age but fewer than 30% ofthem can qualify to serve. Therest are excluded because of

education, physical and mentalhealth, or moral inadequacies. The problem for the military isthe same problem for the laborforce, Wallace said. It is aproblem for the nation becausethat 31.5 million is the laborforce, he said.

Presently, all Army recruitshave a high school degree or itsequivalent. Wallace said whilecriminal convictions normallyexclude a person from service, out of 100,000 recruits, some 600may have felony convictions. Thecase-by-case considerationsreflect the belief that in somecases, even when offenses havebeen serious enough to rise tofelony conviction, a secondchance may be merited and that

who must make the ultimate decisionabout whom to declare theDemocratic Party nominee beforethe party convention in August, arehard pressed now to justify turningtheir backs on Obama, as HillaryClinton and her supporters haveinsisted they do.

Clinton seemed to admit as muchduring what some suggested was aconciliatory victory speech inIndiana.

Though she had hoped for adecisive victory in the Hoosier State, coupled with either a surprise win inNorth Carolina - where both herhusband, former President BillClinton, and North Carolina Gov.Mike Easley, campaignedexhaustively - or at least a

convincing narrowing of the 20-point lead Obama had there, she wasstunningly denied both.

While vowing to work [her]heart out running in West Virginiaand Kentucky -two of the upcomingsix remaining primaries thatconclude June 3 - Clintons tone wasno longer defiant.

I want to commend SenatorObama and his supporters on theirwin in North Carolina, the NewYork senator told supporters, as hersubdued husband, and daughter,Chelsea, looked on. We are, inmany ways, on the same journey. Itsa journey begun long before we were

born. It is a journey by men andwomen who have been on a missionto perfect our union, who marchedand protested, who risked everythingthey had to build an America thatembraces us all.

As she did with the NorthCarolina Black Press a week earlier,

Clinton vowed to work as hard asshe could to elect the Democraticnominee in the fall.

I know that people are watchingthis race and theyre wondering, Iwin, he wins, I win, he wins. Its soclose. And I think that says a lotabout how excited and passionateour supporters are and how intent somany Americans are to really takingtheir country back, Clinton said.

But I can assure you, as I havesaid on many occasions, that nomatter what happens, I will work forthe nominee of the Democratic Partybecause we must win in November.

While his margin of victory in

North Carolina was impressive,Obamas win still betrayed signs ofweaknesses.

With the re-emergence of theracial controversy involving hisformer pastor, the Rev. JeremiahWright, plaguing his campaign andthreatening to undermine his ability

to win a significant percentage ofwhite, working class voters, Obamastruggled with that demographic inNorth Carolina, garnering 36 percentto Clintons 59 percent, according toexit polls.

The same held true in Indiana, where Clinton laid claim to thatsupport base. However, as withObamas other primary victories instates with a significant AfricanAmerican population, especially inthe South, the Democraticfrontrunner dominated the senatorfrom New York, 91 percent to 6percent.

He also did well with young

people; new voters; and white, educated progressive whites.

Thanks to Obama, Democraticvoter registration in North Carolina

jumped to over 100,000 sinceJanuary, and early voting figureslogged in at almost 500,000.North Carolina election officials

estimate that over 2 million voterswent to the polls Tuesday.

But Obama faces anotherlooming problem - Hillary Clintonvoters who vow not to vote for himin November if he is indeed thenominee. Exit polls show that while45 percent of Clinton voters wouldsupport Obama, 38 percent indicatedthey would vote for Republican JohnMcCain.

Pundits are saying Clinton, whois not expected to be chosen asObamas vice presidential runningmate, will have to work hard to pullher white, working class and whitefemale coalition together with

Obamas supporters in order to winthe White House for him. But shemay no be ready to make that deal

just yet.The Obama victory comes amid

yet another attempt by the Clintoncampaign to redefine the terms of thegame, suggesting Tuesday that the

2,025 pledged delegate goal fornomination set by the DemocraticNational Committee should actuallybe 2,208.

Clinton campaign strategistsargue that the pledged delegatesClinton won in the certified Floridaand Michigan primaries shouldcount, even though both statesdelegates were disallowed by theDNC because they changed theirprimary dates without authorization.

While Obama didnt campaignin either state, as mandated by theDNC, and actually removed hisname from the Michigan ballot,Clinton won both uncontested but

    disallowed contests.DNC Chairman Howard Dean

said the 2025 delegate goal is still inforce, even though neither Obamanor Clinton can reach the magicnumber without the approximately300 undeclared super delegatesweighing in.

"Every fight was a movement-to-contact at the platoon through

battalion levels, perhaps at thebrigade level, largely because theenemy was so indescribable, sovery difficult to template. Ourtraditional shaping operationsagainst a conventional enemy justdidn't work against this enemy.

For example, it was hard todetermine how he was defendingin the cities. In Baghdad, with aUAV [unmanned aerial vehicle]looking down, a guy with an AK-47 wearing a polo shirt and pair ofblue jeans looks like a civilian--but he could be the enemy.

The fact is that when ouryoung soldiers were in contact

with the enemy, they weredeveloping the situation at thesame time they were fighting andadapting to the battlefieldconditions continually. And everybody was in the fight,

whether you were a truck driver ora POL [petroleum, oil andlubricant] handler or aninfantryman. There was no trulysecure rear area. Periodically, artillerymen found themselves indirect fire contact. Some combatsupporters showed up ready tosupport but not ready to fight. That's a training issue we've got todeal with. Regardless of branch, soldiers must be able to use theirassigned weapons, bothindividually and collectively.

Q: What was your Commander'sIntent for Fires? How did you

employ your fires--both joint andlandbased?A: My Commander's Intent forFire was to kill as many bad guysas we could as often as we couldso they weren't effective when wegot in direct fire contact.Generally, we targeted theenemy's artillery to preclude himfrom massing fires.

    The enemy was fighting a

"positional defense." Most of hisdefensive preparations were inand around Baghdad, and it didn'tappear he had the wherewithal todo a lot of repositioning. Wereasoned that our direct fire and

joint fires team would be effectiveagainst his positional defense. The only way the enemy

really could hurt us was if weslowed down and he massedindirect fires on our formations.Of particular concern were hisballistic missile forces and thepotential for using chemicalsagainst us. So that's what wetargeted with joint fires. OurUAV's and corps-directed indirectfires and CAS [close air support]went after his artillery systems--especially his rocket forces--ashigh-payoff targets.

Well, I figure that we have allsummer to talk about the Twinsbaseball highs and lows, soinstead well continue to rapabout the highstakes, and highlyentertaining NBA playoffs. Morespecifically, there are some NBAplayers who just plain ole deserve

    attention.Kevin Garnetthaaaa ha ha,

whew! Before I move on to thereal playoff All-Stars I wouldrecommend that the world take amoment to respectfully suggestthat Kevin Garnett not do hiscurrent nipple demonstrationcelebration when his super-powered team is beating anAtlanta Hawks team that just tookhis super powered team to themaximum limit. That would belike the Timberwolves celebratinga victory over the North HighPolars. Actually, that might be agood game.

Ok, now, Chris Paul. It wasmy suggestion to the homies afew weeks ago that Chris Paulshould win the NBA MVP trophy

over Kobe Mamba Bryant. I doadmit that I lost that argument andcame to agree that Kobe deservesto be MVP after being dissed forthe last three or four years. Butwaaaiit a minute! After furtherreview Im going to have to go

back and demand my propers. The first few rounds of the

playoffs have been the ChrisPaul Show. Everything negativethat has been applied to KobeBryant over the years (and he hasmildly improved on thosedeficiencies), would beconsidered a major strong suit for

Chris Paul. I am quite confidentthat Kobe Bryant could average12 assists per game if he had thenatural understanding of theteam concept that Chris Pauldoes. And this is the reason thatChris Paul is a more effectiveteam player in only his second

year. Thats right: Second year.NBA veterans and pundits

already make sweepingstatements about the historicallygreat abilities that Chris Paul has

shown thus far. As with mostgreat players (other than Kobe) itis hard to make a directcomparison between Chris Pauland any other great player in NBAhistory. The closest comparisonthat I can make is to formerDetroit Piston great IsaiahThomas.

The difference that existsbetween the two is that Chris Paulis a much more streamlined pointguard. Isaiah needed Joe Dumarson his Detroit Pistons team inorder to calm down his amazingstreet-ball performances. Street-ball looks dazzling, but team-ballwins professional championships.Im certainly not knocking the

all-time great talent that IsaiahThomas was on the court, butChris Paul just seems like a moreefficient overall team player.Plus, Isaiah looked like a molesterback in the 80s when he played. Ilove Magic Johnson, but I wasnt

feeling the kisses on the cheekbetween he and Isaiah before the1988-89 NBA Finals games.

One of the best things that canbe said about Chris Paul, is that

he plays with a bunch of scrubs.Peja Stojakovic is hardly theplayer that he used to be when heplayed for the Sacramento Kings(and I dont think that he was thatgood then). And who in the worldin David West? The answer to thatquestion is: NOBODY BEFOREHE PLAYED WITH CHRISPAUL!!

It is a beautiful thing to watchan unselfish player. You areseeing great basketball when yousee a player get 17, 18, or 20assists. You are witnessing oldschool team basketball when yousee a player who consistently getstriple-doubles. This is what ChrisPaul is all about, and these are the

reasons that I think that hetechnically deserves the NBAMVP Award over Kobe TheMamba Bryant.

For those people whom havebecome disenchanted with thenew age of NBA basketball, I

would encourage you to watch aNew Orleans Hornets playoffgame with Chris Paul. If thatgame happens to be against the

Los Angeles Lakers I wouldrecommend that you dont miss aminute of that one.

The NBA Playoffs aretremendously good this year. So, inhonor of this elite competition, willhave some ongoing commentary ofthe all-time great players that wesee on the current playoff stage. Iinvite you to send your commentsabout your favorite player to the e-mail address you see over thereunder the dude with the Lakers

jersey.I have to say that I was inspired

to do this series based on TimDuncan. As a Lakers fan, TimDuncan has been a major antagonistto my need for championshipcelebrations. I dont blameMinnesota sports fans for beingbitter about having no recentmajor sports championships. It isfun when your team wins, andprofitable to the region as well.

For 11 years Timothy TheodoreDuncan has silently terrorized theNBA. Duncan is a shade lessathletic than Kevin Garnett, yet heis a better player because of hiscontrolled mental approach to thegame. Maybe that comes with theHonors Degree in Psychology.

Kevin Garnett has been knownto jump on tables and pound his

chest to clarify his passion, andenergy, (I know that I pick on K.G.a lot, but I will never get over seeinghim pass the ball to Sam Mitchell totake the game winning shot in aplayoff game. He didnt even lookat the hoop before he passed it. Imsorry, two thumbs down for that.)while Tim Duncan simply puts theball in the basket and puts the ringson his fingers. Four rings to beexact.

Unflappable and ridiculouslycool are ways that I would describeTim Duncan these days, thoughmany people translate that intoboooring. Myself, I can appreciatesomeone who does so much damageon the court without even gettinghis blood pressure above a restingrate. It is funny to me. It is like the

silent poker player constantlywhoopin the big mouth pokerplayer. Makes you think: Maybe the

big mouth would win if he shut up.Ive been the big mouth manytimes, and shutting up clearly helps.

Tim Duncan definitely shut meup. I used to think he was a goof. Ialways question anyone makingmillions of dollars that obviouslydoesnt have a skilled barber toprovide grooming services. I know

that somebody in the San AntonioSpurs locker room has a pair of hairclippers and liners. How do they lethim get away with that? I usually

make a trade-off with people likethat. Something like: You get ahaircut and lining, and I will eat a

full bowl of pork chitterlings akachitlins; and no I dont eat chitlins,or any other food that smells bad. But, I aint mad at you if you do.Adding hot sauce almost does it forme, too. Anyway, Tim Duncan

needs a lining, but me and everyoneelse can shut up because he has fourNBA Championship rings (maybehe is a little boring if the discussion

leads from basketball to chitlins). Each time Tim Duncan has won

a championship, he was definitelyplaying with a solid supporting cast. Each time, they definitely wouldnot have been successful if TimDuncan was not on that team. Forsome reason I never thought of thisbefore, but Tim Duncan reminds meof a modern day Bill Russell. Theyboth seem to be dynamic, unassuming players. Of course, BillRussell has 11 Championship rings

(in 13 years), so he obviously getsthe nod for the dynamic adjectiveif comparing. Bill Russell wasohyeah, I almost forgot I was talking

about Tim Duncan.Well maybe he is boring after

all! I got pretty hyped up when Timhit the huge 3-point shot in overtimeduring the first game againstPhoenix in the first round of theNBA playoffs. That was anawesome, yet brief series. ThePhoenix Suns performed theirannual exhibition on how NOT toplay defense. Adding an aging Shaqdid nothing to help them win achampionship. The same thing goes

for the Dallas Mavericks who gotbounced with a quickness. TheMavericks added Jason Kidd thisyear. Jason Kidd graduated from

high school in southern Californiaat the same time I did, so I know heneeds to find somewhere to sitdown! Oh, right! My bad! We weretalking about Tim Duncan.

You know what, after tryinghard to make an article about TimDuncan interesting, I have to agreewith many others who tend to callhim boring. Oh! Wait! I forgot. TimDuncan was born in the U.S. VirginIslands. I have never been to theVirgin Islands, but I would have to

imagine it is a beautiful place. Ithink the Virgin Islands

the Army can help redirect a youngpersons life.

Wallace said health concerns, like obesity, play a huge role inshrinking the eligible recruitmentpool. He cited a Rand study in

which 50% of respondents said theydont do anything physical. But weneed people who are smart and fit,Wallace said.

Wallace praise JROTC (JuniorReserve Officer Training Corps)programs in six Minnesota highschools. There are 1,645 JROTCprograms in high schoolsnationwide with about 300 high

schools on waiting lists.Wallace said the military

training does not mean the studentswill automatically join the armed

services. More that half of themdont enlist, he said. But familiesand administrators in high schoolshave noted a decrease in conflictamong students on uniform days, hesaid.

In higher education, the Armywill has launched College of theAmerican Soldier, an accreditedinstitution that provides continuity

and degree completion support andservices for the 300,000 militarypersonnel who annually enroll incorrespondence courses or in localcolleges where they may bestationed. A soldier should be able

to leave active duty with abachelors degree or masters degree,or at least be well on the way toattainment of their personal and

professional education goals, saidWallace, who holds three mastersdegrees.

The Presidential candidates arecurrently making a fuss about an 18-cent gas tax savings that willultimately save you less than $30during the entire summer. Sen.Barack Obama said this has beentried in Illinois and it ended upcosting the people more. That is hisexperience and he uses it to speakagainst another tactical move. Some economist also advise againstthis strategy saying it wouldeliminate any benefit to the

consumers while costing theTreasury more than $9 billion.Since Sens. John McCain andHilary Clinton are not in office, and

theres little or no chance of makingthis summers gas tax reliefpossible, their positions on thisissue are being viewed aspandering.

As a consumer, you can makechanges in your lifestyle thatdecrease your gas consumption andimprove your gas mileage.

    Consider the following:

Avoid warming up your car for aprolonged period of time. Less thana minute warm-up time is enough, even on a cold morning. Whenstarting from dead stop, accelerateslowly. Drive the speedlimit.Remove extra weight from thecar. When youre on the highway, keep your windows closed. Open

windows reduce mileage about10%. Have regular tune-ups andchange your air filter often to ensuregas efficiency. Take public

transportation, carpool, andcombine shopping trips.Consider a hybrid. A hybrid

combines an electric motor with aconventional gas powered engine.Over its lifetime, a hybrid will useroughly half the gas a conventionalcar uses.

Urge your elected officials toraise fuel economy standards to 40miles per gallon. Doing this wouldsave nearly 4 million barrels of oil aday.

    EMPLOYMENT

Is your manager looking over yourshoulder? Are you being introducedto a vast assortment of activityreporting tools? Do you find the jobclassifieds on your desk when youarrive every morning?Congratulations . Youre beingcoached out.

Coached out means someone isholding the back door open for you.It means someone either thinksenough of you to care what happens

next in your career or cares enoughabout unemployment law to cover afew tracks before they let the frontdoor hit you on your way out.Either way, it means you have timeto think and to plan your next move;you may be able to quit on your ownterms. But hurry. Coaching out issomething you feel intuitively orrecognize because youve seen ithappen to someone else. Identify it,acknowledge it, and get busy.

Arminda worked for a companygoing through the same belttightening many organizations areinvolved in today. Locations wereclosed, deadbeats let go, andresponsibilities on her own deskamped up to compensate for thesmaller workforce. When her officeand others were consolidated, shewas promoted to team manager overtwo other people. Arminda thoughtshed escaped the axe. However, management was not something shehad aspired to or trained for. Thepromotion was a fluke, a lack ofinsight on the part of uppermanagement, and a stroke of badluck for Arminda. Like waking up

hungry in the middle of the night,Arminda soon began sensing therumblings of something unpleasant. She knew she was being coachedout.

Know what you know:Arminda took a quick, hard look ather situation. She knewmanagement was not a talent shehad. Her former position had beeneliminated, so she knew that wasnot an option for her. She also knewthat for years she had beensuccessful in certain areas. Shemade a list of her pastachievements, challenges shedovercome and skills sheddeveloped throughout her career.

Next she made a list ofconnections, people who might beinterested to hear that she wasconsidering a job change. This listincluded close friends and family, but also others in the industry shedlike to be in. Important point here:dont let your co-workers knowyoure looking for work. Eventhose you trust. In a volatile workenvironment, people operate in self-preservation mode. They mightkeep your secret. They might not.

Know what you earn:understand your full compensationpackage, including employer paidinsurance or contributions to aretirement account. Add in bonuspotential and upcoming cost ofliving raises if you honestly expectto get these. This total is theminimum amount you need to earnin your next position. When askedabout salary expectations in aninterview, you can honestly andconfidently explain what you needin total compensation, not justsalary alone.

Know what you need: ifadditional skills will help you inyour next job search, start learningnow. Improve your computer skillsby practicing or taking classes; joinToastmasters if yourcommunications skills need a boost. If the situation worsens, if you areactually told to start looking for

something new, ask for theresources you need including helpwith resume writing, outplacementservices and time off to interview asneeded. Your employer respects

you enough to give you a heads upon the situation; respect him or herenough to schedule interviews earlyor late in the day or over your lunchhour, in order to minimize thedisruption to your current workgroup.

Arminda had a candidconversation with her managerabout her strengths and areas whereshe could improve. The manageragreed that Arminda had manytalents that added value to theorganization. On this note,Arminda asked for, and received, aletter of recommendation from heremployer very useful in hersearch, and something that might behard to obtain later on. If there is noway to realistically convince yoursupervisor to recommend you tosomeone else, ask instead for copiesof your employment reviews. These are company owneddocuments, but most HR peoplewill let you have a copy if you askwhile youre currently employedthere.

Pay attention: if youre readingthis in Minnesota, you are luckyenough to live in a place wherepeople get what they deserve, atleast in terms of vacationcompensation. The amount ofvacation time accrued as of the dayyou leave the company is yourmoney and has to be paid out to youwithin a reasonable amount of time.

Being coached out is not anymore pleasant than being laid off.Its just easier to navigate through.

Plan ahead and youll be able tolook for work because you want to,not because you have to.
