“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy
Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are
not your own?”
Paul asks his audience this poignant question in the 1st letter to
the Corinthians (6:19). Church teaching has always upheld the
value and dignity of human beings: soul and body. After all, we
were created in the image and likeness of God. According to the
Genesis creation account, God breathes life into Adam (2;17). We
therefore should respect it as a gift from God which has dignity because it is
intimately connected to our soul and the Spirit. (Catechism #365).
What about after death? Once the soul has left the body, does a body no longer
have the same dignity? On the contrary, we as Catholics believe that, “The bodies
of the dead must be treated with respect and charity, in faith and hope of the
Resurrection. The burial of the dead is a corporal work of mercy; it honors the
children of God, who are temples of the Holy Spirit.” This is why the Church insists
that the body, even if cremated, be given the dignity of being placed intact into a
blessed place of rest. The Church does allow for autopsy, donation of organs, and
even donation of the body to science, as long as such practice does not deny our
faith in the resurrection of the body and the body is respected and given a proper
burial as soon as possible (Catechism #2300-2301).
Recent news stories have suggested that it has become common practice for body
parts obtained through immoral means to be used and disposed of in ways that fail
to respect the God given dignity that we believe our bodies possess. Pope Francis
has decried such abuses of life and bodies as the product of a “widespread
mentality of profit, the throwaway culture, which has today enslaved the hearts and
minds of so many.” It is only natural that we should be disturbed by these actions;
for we know the dignity that human lives and bodies should be given.
How can we respond? First, we should pray for an end to such practices and for
those affected by them. If you feel moved to take further action, I encourage you to
visit the Diocese of Joliet’s respect life page for more information:
Please know of my constant prayer for all of you, that the Holy Spirit dwelling in
you would grant the peace, healing, and strength you need to witness to our faith,
Fr. Jason
