There are careers available in almost every field, including government, commercial, educational, and private organizations. GIS technicians read and interpret maps, manipulate and understand digital land data, and manage data entered into a GIS database. They also design and prepare data using GIS hardware and software applications. GIS improves decision making by government officials, identifies at-risk and under-served populations within a community, improves allocation of resources and planning, and manages natural resources and improves communication during a crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Geographic Information Systems offer a radically different way to produce and use maps to manage communities and industries.
