In the fall of 2008, the Georgia State women’s golf team set the stage for a return trip to the NCAA tournament, and a wildly successful spring season, by capturing three team titles in fi ve tournaments, fi nding leadership in Iliska Verwey and her two medalist fi nishes, and de-veloping the team chemistry they will need to compete at the highest level.

Verwey opened the season in dramatic fash-ion by fi ring a school and course record 64 in her fi rst round at Elks Run G.C. in the U. of Cincinnati Fall Classic. The Panthers were without the services of senior Anna Scott, who suffered an arm injury prior to competition. Verwey took the reins and led Georgia State to a fi rst place fi nish and a medalist honor for herself by recording a 64-76-70, 210 (-6).

Verwey’s 64 marked the lowest round in school history by four strokes, her 210 set the three-round total record. The Panthers combined for a 298-291-298, 880 (+23) which tied the school’s team record of 880, set in 2005 at the Taco Bell Intercollegiate. The team win was the

12th of head coach Cathy Mant’s career, and kicked off a whirlwind fall for Georgia State.

After fi nishes of 7th of 20 and 4th of 15 in Colorado and North Carolina, respectively, the Panthers set their sights on the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate.

The second round saw under-par rounds from Verwey (68) and Sandra Maier (70), and a team score of 285, setting the school record for lowest second round total.

Georgia State cruised to another team victory, the 21st in school history, behind another Ver-wey medalist performance, the fourth of her career.

Georgia State fi nished up the fall season at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate on Kiawah Island, S.C. at the Oaks Point Golf Course. The Panthers surged up the leader-board on the fi nal day with a fi nal round 297 (+9), the best of the tournament, behind a 71 from Verwey and a 72 from Cathrine Madsen. Georgia State’s fi nal day heroics granted the Panthers their third team victory of the fall, besting the fi eld of 19 by seven strokes.

Fall 2008 Review/Spring 2009 Preview

Sophomore Iliska Verwey’s fi rst tournament of the season set the tone for the Panthers as she broke

two school records.

Sandra Maier’s improved play in 2008 helped the Panthers to another record-breaking moment and

their second team victory of the season.

Off the college circuit, the Panthers have enjoyed success as well. Iliska Verwey competed at the World Team Championships in Australia, fi nish-ing 11th for her home country of South Africa. In November, Anna Scott qualifi ed for the Duramed Futures Tour.

The accolades piled up for Georgia State in the fall. Following her impressive showing in Cincin-nati, Iliska Verwey captured GolfWeek’s National Golfer of the Week award, as well as CAA Golfer of the Week honors. Georgia State golfers were named CAA Golfer of the Week a combined fi ve times during the fall season (Verwey three times, Madsen once, and Maier once).

Panther golfers have recorded four rounds in the 60s (Verwey twice, Claire Starkie once, and Maier once), more than all of 2007-2008. Georgia State golfers recorded seven top-fi ves, nine top-10s, and 15 top-20s.

For the spring, Georgia State will add freshman Charlotte Lorentzen of Denmark to an already top-notch lineup. Lorentzen met sophomore Iliska Verwey at the 2008 World Team Championship in Australia, where Verwey competed with South Af-rica and Lorentzen with Denmark.

Lorentzen has an established reputation overseas as a dynamic young talent with her wins at the 2007 match play and medal play championships in Denmark.

Now with Anna Scott healthy, and Lorentzen added to the mix, Georgia State looks to continue its win-ning ways into the spring as they attempt to exact a measure of revenge at the CAA Championship, and make a return visit to the NCAA tournament.

Georgia State opens the spring at the Qdoba Col-legiate in Miami, Fla. on February 16th. In March, the Panthers travel to San Jose, Calif. for the 2009 Spartan Invitational before returning to Geor-gia to host the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate

on March 30th. At the John Kirk/Panter Intercol-legiate, the Panters will hope to defend their title from 2008 as the tournament’s format expands to three rounds.

Georgia State returns to Florida for the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. on April 6th, a site at which Georgia State has struggled in the past, fi nishing 6th of 15 and 14th of 16 in the last two years.

The Lady Gator Invitational marks the fi nal tune-up before the Panthers host the CAA Championship at Pine Mountain, Ga. on April 17th. In Georgia State’s three appearances at the CAA Champion-ship, the Panthers have compiled one win and two 2nd place fi nishes.

The CAA Championship could pave the way for Georgia State’s return to the NCAA Regional. Tak-ing place May 7-9th, the regional sites are Gaines-ville, Fla., Tempe, Ariz., and Columbus, Ohio. The NCAA Championship will be held May 19-22nd at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mill, Md.

Danish golfer Charlotte Lorentzen brings even more talent to a Georgia State team that won three

out of fi ve tournaments in the Fall season.

The fall allowed for a maturity and team concept to envelop the Panthers, providing crucial expe-rience that will pay dividends during the spring season. Anna Scott’s injury provided an opportu-nity for players like Nicole Loesch to step in and contribute solid scoring in the Panthers’ opening win, and required others like Maier and Madsen to learn how to fi ll an expanded role without the senior.

Scott returned for the UNCG Starmount Fall Clas-sic, in which she fi nished fi fth, while Iliska Verwey travelled to Australia.

Scott and Verwey competed together for the fi rst time in 2008 at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate, sparking the Panthers to two team victories to fi n-ish off the fall season.

Finally at full strength, and with a roster fi lled with proven talent, spring 2009 offers the Georgia State women’s golf team a chance to place an exclamation point at the end of an already his-toric 2008-09 season by making their fi rst trip to the NCAA Championship.

Cathy Mant is in her ninth season as head coach of the Panthers. In her career, she has compiled 15 team tour-nament victories as head coach.

In the fall of 2008, Mant led the Panthers to wins

at the U. of Cincinnati Fall Classic, the Lady Pi-rate Intercollegiate, and the Edwin Watts/Pal-metto Intercollegiate. Mant also coached Iliska Verwey to her third and fourth career medalist fi nishes at the U. of Cincinnati Fall Classic and the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate.

In 2007-08, Mant coached Georgia State to wins at the Lady Jaguar Invitational and John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate. The Panthers fi n-ished second at the CAA Championship, earn-ing a berth in the NCAA East Regional. The NCAA appearance was the fourth in school history, all four coming under Mant’s tute-lage. Mant was awarded with her second CAA Coach of the Year trophy in three years, her fourth conference coach of the year honor all-time.

Mant was named the CAA Coach of the Year in 2006 after leading the Panthers to their fi rst CAA title as a fi rst-year member. With the con-ference title in hand, the Panthers earned their second-straight and third-ever automatic bid to the NCAA Regional. It also marked the second consecutive year that Georgia State won the conference title. Mant guided a young team to two team titles and seven top-fi ve fi nishes in 2005-06.

She was honored as the Atlantic Sun Confer-ence Coach of the Year in 2005 after guid-ing the Panthers to their second conference championship and NCAA Regional automatic bid.

Mant was previously named the A-Sun Con-ference Coach of the Year in 2003 after lead-ing the Panthers to their fi rst-ever conference title and NCAA Tournament bid.

Under Mant’s leadership, the women’s golf team won a school-record four tournaments and fi nished in the top-fi ve in nine events dur-ing 2004-05. She also directed former golfer Lisbeth Meincke to four straight conference individual titles and conference player of the year honors in 2005 and 2006. In addition, Mant helped Joanna Klatten become Geor-gia State’s fi rst women’s golfer to qualify and compete in the NCAA National Championship in 2006.

Mant was named Georgia State’s fi rst full-time women’s golf coach in September of 2000 and set immediate expectations for developing a nationally successful program at that point. Previously, Mant had been involved in the golf industry since turning professional in 1973 and her experience was just one of the many attri-butes that she brought to Georgia State.

Her collegiate golfi ng career reached its pinnacle in 1970, when Mant won the individual title of what was then called the Division of Girls and Women’s Sports Championship, now known as the Women’s NCAA Cham-pionship.

Accompanying that victory at Arizona State University, she was named a Collegiate All-American and was in-ducted into the Arizona State Univer-sity Sports Hall of Fame in 1999. Mant helped continue a strong tradition of success in the Sun Devil’s program, a tradition that now includes Joanne Carner, Heather Farr, and Danielle Ammaccapane.

After her collegiate days came to an end, Mant played on the LPGA Tour from 1976 to 1986. Mant’s best fi nish on the Tour was third at the Rail Charity Championship in Springfi eld, Ill. She played in 10 United States Women’s Opens, as well as each major on the LPGA Tour. Mant was highly involved in the LPGA player government and served as a player representative to the LPGA Board of Directors as well as the President of the LPGA Tourna-ment Division in 1985.

When she fi nished her LPGA career, Mant decided to devote her time and energy to a full-time teaching career. She has developed a strong following of students, many of whom have gone on to play collegiate golf at such universities as Stanford, the University of Southern California, Oregon, Arizona State, Tennessee, San Jose State, and Ohio State. Mant is a Class A member of both the LPGA Tour, the Teaching and CP Division, and cur-rently serves on the United States Girls’ Junior

Committee. Mant continues to teach at Ea-gle’s Landing Country Club, home of the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate. In 2002, Mant was named one of Golf For Women’s “Top 50 Teachers.”

One of Mant’s largest areas of focus is the short game, believing strong short play allows the Panthers to consistently compete at the top level. Mant regularly works with State’s golfers on fi rming old technique and introducing new short shots. She also devotes time to the men-tal aspects of the game and course manage-ment, a subject she feels most amateur golfers do not completely understand and often ignore in practice time.

Mant is also a member of the Golf Coaches Hall of Fame, an induction that came in 1989. In 1999, Mant co-authored “Golf Coaches Guide to Success,” a book designed to help high school golf coaches prepare members of their golf teams for the college golf experience.

Mant was born in Seattle, Wash., and grew up in Eugene, Ore. She is married to Rick Mant and has a 22-year-old daughter, Ashley. Mant received her Bachelor of Science degree in marketing from Arizona State in 1972.

Georgia State Women’s Golf 2008-09

The 2007-08 season yielded the Georgia State women’s golf team a pair of team victo-ries, a second place fi nish at the CAA Cham-pionship, and the team’s fourth ever trip to the NCAA Regional. Individually, the Panthers exceeded all expectations, earning medalist honors three times, garnering multiple con-ference honors, including CAA Golfer of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors for Iliska Verwey, and conference Coach of the Year accolades for head coach Cathy Mant. Three golfers were named All-CAA as Georgia State rose to the national top 40 for 33 consecutive weeks.

Georgia State’s breakout season included wins at the Lady Jaguar Invitational and John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate, and team fi nishes of 2nd at the Myrtle Beach Classic, McHaney/Morehead Invitational, Canes and Cardinals Classic, and the CAA Champion-ship.The Panthers earned an NCAA East Re-gional berth, where they fi nished 14th of 21.

Freshman Iliska Verwey led the way for Geor-gia State with two medalists at the Myrtle Beach Classic and Lady Jaguar Invitational. The win at the Myrtle Beach Classic featured Verwey’s fi rst career round in the 60s as she fi nished the event with a round of 69. Ver-wey’s year concluded with six top-10s in 11 events. Thanks to her successful freshman campaign Verwey earned both CAA Golfer of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors for the Panthers. Verwey fi nished the season ranked 51st in the GolfStat Cup and 83rd in the GolfWeek standings.

Junior Anna Scott fi nished second on the team in scoring, posting the best fi nal round scoring average. Scott’s season included six top-10s and only one fi nish outside of the top-25. Scott fi nished the season ranked 71st in the GolfStat Cup and 116th by GolfWeek. Scott was named to the All-CAA 1st Team at the end of the season.

Sophomore Cathrine Madsen enjoyed an ex-traordinary end to her season with a medalist honor at the CAA Championship after posting a 70-69-72 211 (-5), making her the second

golfer in Georgia State history to capture a win at a confer-ence championship. Madsen was awarded the Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player Award and named to the All-CAA 2nd Team.

Senior Claire Starkie powered her way to fi ve top-25’s last sea-son, including an eighth place fi nish at the Lady Jaguar Invi-tational. Starkie’s explosive play put her in the lead after two rounds at Kiawah Island last year, before fi nishing T-18th.

Sandra Maier showed great promise in 2007-08, recording a 72 as a freshman on her way to a top 10 fi nish at the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate. Maier also posted 72 in Miami at the Canes and Cardinals Classic. She had her score counted 18 times on the season, as she developed into a reliable option for coach Mant.

Sophomore Nicole Loesch matured during the 2007-08 season, posting a season low of 75 at the McHaney/Morehead Invita-tional to fi nish 34th. Her best fi nish of the year came at the Lady Jaguar Invitational, where she fi nished 20th. Cherishton Brett gained valuable experience in 2007-08 by playing in two tour-naments as a freshman, the Lady Jaguar Invitational and the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate. Brett’s freshman campaign included a 28th place fi nish at the Lady Jaguar Invitational.

Over the past 14 seasons, the John Kirk/Panther In-tercollegiate has become the annual highlight of the Georgia State women’s golf team’s schedule.

For the fi rst time since 2002, the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate will consist of 54 holes of play, ex-panding from a 36 hole format.

The tournament was fi rst played in 1993 at North-wood Country Club, the de facto home of the Pan-thers until 1999. The tournament was founded by Georgia State golf coach Kevin Propst, assistant Kirk McQueen and with extensive help and support from Northwood CC club pro John Kirk. When John Kirk passed away after a battle with cancer, his name was branded to the Panther Intercollegiate to honor his assistance and commitment to the Georgia State women’s golf program.

The 2009 John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate will fea-ture a strong fi eld comprised of teams from around the country and will take place at Eagle’s Landing Country Club in Stockbridge, Ga. to be held March 30th and 31st. The 54-hole tournament is played on the par-72, 6,100-yard course.

The 12-team tournament fi eld features nine teams ranked in Golfweek’s top 100 including 40th-ranked Chattanooga and 63rd-ranked Campbell. Also ex-pected to participate are Augusta State, East Tennes-see State, Elon, Jacksonville State, CAA rival James Madison, Maryland, Miami, Sacramento State, and Western Carolina.
