GeoSUR Program – Basic Facts

The Program seeks to facilitate access by decision makers and the public to Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) geospatial data.

More than 85 national and regional institutions are currently participating in the Program – with more invited to join.

The geospatial network promoted by GeoSUR in LAC is fully decentralized – data is kept close to its producers.

GeoSUR is the first Regional SDI development to be established in the LAC region.

The SDI geoservices developed by, or with assistance from, GeoSUR are available at no cost on the web.

Building bridges between the regional data-sharing initiatives: The PAIGH SIRGAS PC-IDEA and GeoSUR Joint Action Plan

2013-2015 To expedite SDI development in the Americas

The joint plan of action, was created by comparing the features of each organization, their functions, work plans and their institutional projection to:

• harmonize efforts and work plans, • foster specialization • avoid duplication • prepare institutions for technology changes and SDI innovations The purpose is not to bring about a new form of governance of regional SDI but rather to consolidate a widely distributed system of responsibilities, while respecting the necessary independence of the parties

SDI of the Americas will not become a tangible and sustainable reality as a result of individual activities, rather as the outcome of coordinated actions implemented by the key institutions and regional initiatives

Latin America and the Caribbean PAIGH, SIRGAS, PC-IDEA, and GeoSUR are the key pillars

committed to the building of SDI

PAIGH - Pan American Institute of Geography and History (1928) http://www.ipgh.org/

Regional cooperation with IGN Spain is transcendent, including multiple capacity building initiatives and innovative ways for SDI implementation. Also, URISA Chapter is becoming a relevant SDI factor for SDI development in the Caribbean

SIRGAS – Geocentric Reference System for the Americas (1993) http://www.sirgas.org/

PC-IDEA – Permanent Committee for Geospatial Data Infrastructure of the Americas (2000) http://www.cp-idea.org/

Geospatial Network for Latin America and the Caribbean (2007) http://www.geosur.info/

From left to right: Eric van Praag (GeoSUR); Valeria Araujo (CP-IDEA); Claudio Brunini, (SIRGAS) and Santiago Borrero (IPGH)

These joint actions should lead to the consolidation of SDI as an increasingly efficient mechanism for decision-making, regional integration and the growing of the infrastructure required for sustainable development in the Americas. The document is available in multiple languages at: http://www.ipgh.org/Iniciativas/JointActionPlan.pdf

Building bridges between the regional data-sharing initiatives: The PAIGH SIRGAS PC-IDEA and GeoSUR Joint Action Plan

2013-2015

The Joint Plan seeks to expedite SDI development in the Americas by collaborating on targets that are common and by consolidating: • PAIGH as the “facilitator” of regional processes and a capacity builder; • SIRGAS as the supplier of geodetic reference frames for the region; • CP-IDEA as steward of regional policies and liaison with the UNRCCs and GGIM and, • GeoSUR as a key developer of services and applications built on regional and institutional spatial databases

JRC INSPIRE (JRC) and GeoSUR (CAF/PAIGH) Cooperation for the Americas

INSPIRE is globally unique for multiple reasons. In the Americas we don´t foresee the development of a comparable regional SDI in the near future. This is why we need to take a closer look at INSPIRE. INSPIRE can influence regional SDI development due to its support to open data, its record on interoperability and data sharing, its experience integrating regional datasets and its development of shared regional GIS resources. Since INSPIRE 2012 in Istanbul, CAF, PAIGH and JRC have on-going talks aimed at increasing and projecting collaboration in key areas such as: • Methodologies, processes and modeling that could be leveraged in Latin America and the Caribbean • Development of spatial and environmental datasets for monitoring biodiversity hotspots • Assistance to GeoSUR and the national geographic institutes for the adaptation data compliance mechanisms • Capacity building and technical assistance in SDI-related topics

Overall, greater collaboration with INSPIRE might lead to the consolidation of SDI as an increasingly efficient mechanism in support of decision-making, regional

integration and sustainable development in the Americas
