1 Introduction

Tainui Group Holdings Limited (TGH) and Chedworth Park Limited (CPL) are currently

undertaking investigations for the rezoning and structure planning of approximately 600ha of land

to the east of Hamilton as part of the Ruakura development. TGH has engaged Opus International

Consultants Ltd (Opus) to carry out the following:

1) Geotechnical field testing of the Stage 1 area;

2) Geotechnical factual reporting of the Stage 1 area;

3) Geotechnical assessment reporting of the Stage 1 area;

4) Pavement assessment and reporting of the Stage 1 area;

5) A desktop NES contaminated sites assessment for the combined entire area of the Ruakura

development area.

The Stage 1 investigation area comprises approximately a third of the full Ruakura development

area. Stage 1 comprises part of a proposed residential development in the north-west of the site,

an Inland Port with the Industrial land to the south of the site and another area of Industrial land

north of the AgResearch centre. The location and extent of the Ruakura area is shown on Figure 1.

This report presents the results of the site investigation field work and the laboratory testing

undertaken for Stage 1 of the Ruakura development.

2 Site Description

A general description of the topography across the Stage 1 Ruakura Development area is that it

comprises mostly open level pastoral and agricultural farmland, with slight rolling hills.

No significant boggy or marsh areas were noted at the site although it is noted that our site visit has

followed a particularly dry spell of weather. It is therefore possible that there may be wet areas or

areas that experience surface water ponding at the site, particularly during the winter months,

which we were unable to observe.

A number of associated farm buildings (both farm houses and outbuildings) are located on the site.

These outbuildings are generally barn or workshop type structures for storing crops, machinery,

maintenance equipment and tools.

There is a network of gravel surfaced ‘races’ which provide access to the field areas across the site.

A number of drainage ditches are also present across the site area, mainly along field boundaries.

Trees are sporadically located on the site but generally close to ditches or fence line areas.

3 Stage 1 Site Investigation

The geotechnical field work was carried out in April 2013 and comprised of:

• 12 Rotary Cored Boreholes

• 16 Test pits with Scala Penetrometer Testing

• 43 Auger / Scala Penetrometer Tests

• 3 Seismic Cone Penetrometer Tests (SCPT)

• 5 Cone Penetrometer Tests (CPT)

• 12 Permeability tests in borehole piezometers

• Groundwater Monitoring

The exploratory hole locations carried out as part of the Stage 1 ground investigation are shown on

Figure 2, Figure 3, and Figure 4.

The field works were scoped by Opus in discussion with TGH. All exploratory holes were

supervised full time and were logged by Opus Engineers in general accordance with the NZ

Geotechnical Society guidelines1.

3.1 Boreholes

A total of 12 rotary cored boreholes (BH101 to BH112) were carried out to depths ranging from

25.95m to 30.45m.

All boreholes were logged by Opus engineers in the field at the time of drilling. The logs are

included here in Appendix A.

The boreholes were drilled by Perry Drilling Ltd using a rotary drilling rig with HQ wireline triple

tube coring and wash drilling. Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) were carried out using split spoon

(Raymond) sampler. Undisturbed samples of fine grained soils for laboratory testing were taken

using 54mm stainless steel thin walled push tubes.

Standpipe piezometers were installed in all boreholes (see bore logs for details).

With the exception of BH110, the piezometers in the BHs were dual type with slotted screens,

surrounded by “Walton Park” sand, with a 0.5m bentonite plug above and below the chosen screen

depth and above. The details of the dual standpipes were generally for a pipe with a shallow

response zone, and a pipe with a deep response zone. PVC caps were installed at the top of all

piezometers and with a locked flush metal cover (Toby box or similar) and concreted in.

The shallow piezometer was damaged upon extraction of the casing at BH108. BH108a was

therefore drilled to the side for the purposes of installing the deep piezometer, constructed in a

similar manner to the dual pipes.

The hole collapsed at BH110 following extraction of the borehole casing and consequently a second

hole (BH110a) was drilled close to the side for the purposes of installing the single standpipe.

3.2 Test Pits

A total of 16 test pits (TP101 to TP116) were machine excavated to 4m depth below ground level and

Scala Penetrometer tests were carried out generally to 2m depth in the pit.

Disturbed bulk bag samples were taken by the supervising Opus engineer.

Groundwater levels and seepages given on the test pit logs were those observed during the period

the test pits were open.

Copies of the test pit records are presented in Appendix B.

3.3 Auger / Scala Penetrometer Holes

A total of 43 Auger Scala holes (AS101 to AS144) were carried out generally to 4m depth or refusal.

All tests were performed in accordance with NZS 4402: 1988, test 6.5.2.

Shallow slotted standpipe installations were put in in the Auger Scala locations AS103, AS107,

AS116, AS121, AS122, AS125, AS127, AS136, AS140 and AS144. These installations included

“Walton Park” sand placed around the pipe and a Toby box cover concreted over the pipe to protect

the installation.

Copies of the Auger Scala records are presented in Appendix C.

3.4 Cone Penetrometer Tests

Perry Drilling carried out the static Dutch Cone Penetrometer Tests (CPT) with an electronic “Geo-

mil” piezocone, using a track mounted rig.

A total of 8 cone penetrometer tests (CPT101 to CPT105 and SCPT101 to SCPT103) were carried out

to depths between 25m and 35.01m. Three of these locations (denoted as SCPT101 to SCPT 103)

were selected for seismic cone penetrometer tests.

Water levels shown on the CPT plots are the water levels measured in the holes left by the CPT

probe soon after the probe was withdrawn.

Copies of all the CPT printout records are presented in Appendix D.

3.4.1 Shearwave Velocities in SCPTs

Shear wave velocity measurements were generally taken at 1.00m depth intervals during testing

using 3 accelerometers, one for each axis. Source shear waves were generated at the surface with a

sledge hammer by hitting a steel plate that was held down by one of the CPT outriggers. The steel

plate was struck three times on the right and three times on the left hand side to generate 6 data

files. These data files include the seismic shear wave information at each depth increment tested.

The analysis and processing of the raw data will be reported on in our interpretive report.

3.5 Ground Water Monitoring

Groundwater monitoring was undertaken at various stages as the site works progressed and on the

following days:

• 19thApril 2013

• 22nd April 2013

• 3rd May 2013

• 10th May 2013.

On Table 1 we present the groundwater levels which were measured during the works and up to the

time of reporting.

3.6 Permeability Tests

A total of 12 permeability tests were carried out within the shallow standpipe piezometers in all

boreholes. In five the flow rate was too high to establish a positive head in the piezometer. In two

the flow rate was such that a falling head test was considered appropriate. In the remaining six

piezometers a constant head test was performed.

The permeabilities were calculated using the formulae given in BS5930:1999 and the results are

presented in Table 4. The field test data is presented in Appendix E.

4 Survey

All exploratory hole locations were surveyed between the 19th and 22nd April 2013 using Real Time

Kinematic (RTK) satellite navigation techniques to enhance the position data derived from satellite

based positioning systems and used in conjunction with GPS, providing centimetre level accuracy.

The exploratory hole coordinates and levels are given in Table 2.

The “as done” locations are shown on Figure 2, Figure 3, and Figure 4.

5 Laboratory Testing

The following laboratory tests were scheduled by Opus and carried out on the soil samples obtained

during the field works:

• 6 Oedometer Consolidation

• 6 Organic Content

• 10 Atterberg Limits – Liquid limit, plastic limit, plasticity index.

• 6 New Zealand Standard Compaction

• 10 Californian Bearing Ratio (CBR) un-soaked

• 10 Californian Bearing Ratio (CBR) soaked

• 10 Particle Size Distribution (hydrometer)

Table 3 presents a summary of the laboratory tests carried out as part of this investigation.

Laboratory test results are included in Appendix F.

The testing was carried out to NZS4402 ‘Methods of Testing Soil for Civil Engineering Purposes’-

1986 or other appropriate New Zealand standards and where applicable were tested to IANZ

accredited procedures, as shown on results sheets.
