Introduction
A key to the quality education offered at Geraldine High School is our commitment to providing a range of sports and other activities to all students regardless of age or ability. Sport and cultural activities, therefore, are a big part of a student’s life at school. We cater for a wide range of sporting interests and abilities, and encourage both elite performance and enthusiastic involvement.
Sport is a compulsory subject in Years 7 - 13 in 2015. All students are encouraged to take part in at least one summer and one winter competitive sport throughout the school year. This commitment usually means time taken outside of school hours. We have wonderful facilities at school to accommodate most sports.
The range of sports and activities available to young people is staggering, and the extent to which they show their commitment and ability to balance academic, family, work and sporting life is impressive. The life skills gained from involvement in sport – whether as a team or an individual – are well documented, and are never regretted.
We enjoy a close relationship with local sports clubs and benefit from being part of an active community. Teachers, parents and code officials are essential and valued providers of coaching, managing, transporting, refereeing, feeding and supporting our young sports people. In this respect we are certainly a fortunate school.
There is a large team of people running sport at Geraldine High School. In 201 the key personnel are:
HoD Sport – Mr Romans
Sports Coordinator – Miss Heron
Sports Captains – Daniel Stanton and Rosie O’Brien(and the Sports Committee)
The Physical Education Department – Mr Powell, Mr Romans, Miss Meyer & Mr Blogg
Senior Management – Mr Rogers This booklet provides students and parents all the information required to help students choose sports and activities they wish to take part in, including our sport Period activities and the competitive sports teams that are available. It has been an impressive undertaking by our Sports Coordinator, Miss Heron and I hope you will direct any questions, information updates or offers of assistance to her.
I would like to wish all players a successful and enjoyable year of sport in 2015.
Mr Simon Coleman Principal

Sports Uniforms
Details for sports uniforms are outlined with each sport in this booklet. Some sports uniforms are issued and supplied by the school and may have a hire charge. Students failing to return their uniform will be invoiced for the cost of replacing it. Students are reminded that when travelling to and from sporting events that they are required to wear either the full school uniform or the full school tracksuit.
Transport
Teams will often be transported to and from sporting events by buses, mini vans, teachers, coaches and parent helpers. The cost of using any of these means of transport will be disbursed to the students concerned.
Costs
Costs for any of these sports and activities vary depending on each sport and the requirements of that sport. All costs are only approximates and may change from the time this booklet is given to the students. All coaches and teachers will endeavour to inform parents of any changes in cost at the earliest possible time.

Sports and Blues Awards
In order to recognise excellence in sport, our top students are awarded Sports and Blues Awards to recognise their achievements. The criteria for each sport and activity can be varied but the principles for Blues Awards are summarised below:
Blues must be a very high standard of achievement. The nominee’s standard must be comparable to the performance of a senior blues nominee in that sport.
The candidate must have performed with distinction over two consecutive seasons in the nominated sport.
School orientated, ie: to be issued only to pupils whose sport is connected with school, or organised or entered from school.
No-one shall be considered eligible for Sports Blues unless they have represented their school with honour, sportsmanship and dedication. The candidates must have taken part in practices where they are organised.
Nominations for Sports Blues shall be called for from coaches and these nominations forwarded on the appropriate form to the Blues Committee.
N.B. The Blues committee consists of the H.O.D of Sport and either the Principal or Deputy Principal, and the Sports Co-ordinator. The nomination forms are kept as references and a measure for Blues form one year to another. If further discussion is necessary, them the committee may request further clarification of details of the nominee’s performance.
If a candidate fits all the criteria except part (b) above he/she may be considered as eligible if his/her performance rates so highly in the nominator’s opinion that a special case can be made.

Coaches and team managers have the right to stand a student down from any game time and/or ban them from interschool visits. The Principal is to be consulted when team members have been disciplined by the coach, team manager or advisory board member.
Unacceptable Language
Coaches and team managers are expected to take action against students using unacceptable language. Students may be removed from the court/field for a period of time during the game. Incidents of unacceptable language are to be referred to the Principal.

Coaches/managers should not condone, or partake in, the use of drugs and alcohol at any after match or end of year function.
Policy on Alcohol
Alcohol should not be part of any school sports activity.
Students while outside of school should be aware that their behaviour and attitude reflects on the school.
Parents should maintain high standards that are compatible with the profile of the school. They should realise that the actions of their children reflect on the school and that the behaviour of the students is the ultimate responsibility of their parents.
Sports Coordinators, coaches and managers should portray healthy attitudes within the activities they are organising.
