Van der Tuuk (1824-1894) was a legend even during his
lifetime, a great scholar, but at the same time an eccentric
nonconformist. Linguistic activities in the Dutch East Indies
were motivated by missionary activities until well into the nineteenth century.
Protestant mission from the Netherlands was in the hands of Nederlands Bijbel
Genootschap, Netherlands Bible Society.

to 1874 in Amoy, Canton, Peking and Sumatra. In 1875 he became the curator of the
archaeological collection of the Batavian Society, and held various roles in the
colonial administration. He also became secretary, from 1877, and president, from
1889, of the Batavian Society. He was the first linguist to conclude that a particular
animal mentioned in a Chinese text of 1416 was actually the well-known Malayan
Tapir.

First edition published in 1860. - Van Hoëvell asked for a voluntary
discharge because he had been branded as 'suspect' in the Dutch
East Indies. He wrote a pamphlet dealing with these events, but also
based one of his novellas on them. It is called 'The Suspects', written in 1858, and
was included in his volume About life in the Indies (Uit het Indische leven, 1860). It
is one of his best works, and has remained relevant to this day. At once recognizable
is the pattern it describes of an authoritarian society (Nieuwenhuys, Mirror of the

The cultivation system began to be dismantled in ca. 1850, initially because of a
hostility in the Netherlands, under the new more democratic constitution of 1848, to
the favored position of the sugar contractors and the NHM, and later because of
growing interest in larger scale private interest in the Indies and becaue of political
indignation over the oppressive practices linked with the cultivation system. The
Agrian Law of 1870, which formely abolished forced cultivation, is generally
regarded as the end of the cultivation system. This study is against the renovation.

Hendrik Kern (1833-1917), a Dutch linguist and
Orientalist, is regarded as one of the founding fathers of
Oriental studies in the Netherlands. He displayed an
extraordinary ability to study, and to master, a wide
variety of languages: European, Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic, Hebrew, Malayan, etc. He
laid the foundation for Austronesian studies. It is as a comparativist and a philologist
that he gained his great reputation. His interests were not restricted to pure
linguistics.

Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936) was a
famous Dutch scholar of Oriental cultures and languages and Advisor on Native
Affairs to the colonial government of the Netherlands East Indies. 'He knew more
about Islam than the best-informed Muslim and more about colonial government
than the Colonial Office itself, and many an opponent was antagonised or even
silenced by his vitrolic criticism'.
With Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936) a new chapter begins in Dutch Islam
scholarship in general and the study of Indonesian Islam in particular. .. In spite of
all the criticism, no one intending to seriously study Islam in Indonesia will be able
to avoid reading Snouck Hurgronje's work and consulting them again and again'
(Boland-Farjon, Islam in Indonesia, p.16-17). The collected works is an authorised
edition with corrections by the author. It includes all his publications until 1927 with
the exception of his largest monographs.

precise translations; Snouck Hurgronje was a past master in this
respect, whilst Djajadiningrat's work in this field equals his in
quality. Due to this, it is one of the best dictionaries of an
Indonesian language, and also students of languages different from Achehnese will
often be able to consult it with profit (Voorhoeve, Languages of Sumatra, p.6).

The official eye-witness report by lieutenant Kempees, aide-de-
camp of Van Daalen during the famous, careful prepared, expedition
to Aceh, Sumatra. The expedition was successfull and Kempees' book is known for
its accurate information. The expedition was carried out with such ruthlessness that
public and parliamentary opinion turned against military policy in Aceh. (Cf. P. van
't Veer, De Atjeh-oorlog p. 267-269). Photographs were taken by Henricus Marinus
Neeb (1870-1933) ,a Dutch military doctor during the later stages of the long lasting
Aceh War. He photographed sights in the area beginning in 1904 including
architecture, indigenous peoples, colonial buildings such rail infrastructure and
buildings, topography, scenes of Dutch soldiers, and Acehnese killed in the conflict.

Extracted from Commelin's collection of voyages. - Published for the first time in the
Begin ende voortgangh was Jan Sas' description of Admiral Steven van der Hagen's
first voyage to the East Indies, 1599-1601. Sas' journal describes Van der Hagen's
attack on the Portuguese at Amboina and the building of a Dutch fort there - the first
Dutch fort in the East Indies. Commelin appended two other journals to Sas' account:
one describes the voyage of two ships to Acheh in 1600-1601 and ends abruptly with
the capture of the commander and several crewmen by the natives. The other, written
by Reyer Corneliszoon, describes Admiral Jacob van Heemskerck's voyage to
Sumatra in 1601-02. None appears to have been published elsewhere (Lach & Van

Extracted from Commelin's collection of voyages. - Financed by Bathasar de
Moucheron, Van Spilbergen's three ships left Verre in Zeeland on May, 1601. From
May 30 to September 2, 1602, the fleet was anchored at Batticaloa on Ceylon while
Van Spilbergen and his entourage negotiated a treaty with the king of Kandy.
Between September 16, 1602, and March 30, 1603, they were in Acheh negotiating
with the sultan and hunting for Portuguese ships. In February, 1603, VOC ships
arrived in Acheh and Van Spilbergen's fleet joined them. After spending most of the
summer of 1603 in Bantam, Van Spilbergen returned to Vlissingen on March 24,
1604 (Lach & Van Kley, Asia in the making of Europe, III,1, p.443-444). Proceeding
around the Cape he named Elizabeth Island (= Dasseneiland) after his wife, and
entered and named Tafel Baay (=Table Bay) after the flat-topped mountain
overlooking it (Howgego p.987).

- Interesting account based on information and reports collected by De Stuers (1788-
1861) when he was military commandant and resident of Padang between 1824 and
1829. He left the colony after a conflict with the governor-general about the
expansion of authority in Sumatra. 'Veth published the book because it clarified a
little-known episode in colonial history. In Veth's view, it underscored the need for
the Netherlands to concern itself more actively with the administration of the Outer
Islands. In an annotated introduction running to over a hundred pages Veth reviewed
the history of Dutch military action on Sumatra' (Van der Velde, P.J. Veth, p. 119).
The fine plates are after drawings by the author. - Age-browned otherwise fine.
