A team named after somecollege football powerhouseslooked pretty impressive itselfin winning the recent DailyNonpareil Get Fit Challenge.

Alanebwa won the event bylosing 222 total pounds or 20.5percent of the total teamweight. The name of the teamcame by combining Alabama,Nebraska and Iowa, the favoriteschools of the four-man team.

“It’s not a big secret,” saidmember Ben Moss. “We had aplan and executed that plan. Wehad a strict diet and a workoutroutine that everyone stuck to.”

“The team thing was goodmotivation,” fellow member JeffHass said. “You don’t want to letyour team members down.”

Besides Moss and Hass, theteam included Josh Owens and

Chris Congdon. In a way, it wasa family affair. Owens is Hass’stepson, while Moss is his son-in-law. Congdon is a close friendto all of them.

Alanebwa truly dominatedthe competition. The teammembers lost 71 pounds morethan the second-place finisher, the Beginner Beach Bodies. In

fact, each member exceeded hisown goal slightly.

“Each had a goal of losing 50pounds,” said Moss, whodropped from 200 pounds downto a current 145. He was theoverall male winner as well.

“Ben motivated all of us,”Hass said. “He certainly helpedme with training.”

Hass, in his 50s and the “oldman” in the group as he calledhimself, got involved not only tolose weight, but improve hisphysical condition after suffer-ing a ruptured Achilles tendonlast year, he said.

For the most part, each mem-ber competed pretty much onhis own, according to Hass. Forhim, the regimen included oneday of lighting weights, followedthe next day with cardio exer-cises.

“We talked throughout theevent, so we had a feeling of howeach was doing,” Hass said.

Owens worked out in thegym four or five times weekly, focusing on the ellipticalmachines 30 to 45 minutes eachtime, he said. His outdoor jog-ging exercise involved runninga minimum of two miles eachtime, he added.

A common part of each mem-ber’s training was healthier eat-ing habits. This included a dras-tic reduction in drinking high-calorie soft drinks and, ofcourse, fatty fast foods.

“I started eating higher pro-tein foods and cut out a lot ofcarbs,” Owens said.

“You kind of miss drinkingpop initially, but as you go onit’s no big deal,” Moss said.

Perhaps most importantly, the members continue, andplan on continuing, to exercisemore frequently and eat health-ier.

“I stopped eating fast foods, and instead of candy bars I’meating treats like frozenyogurt,” Hass said. “I’m modify-ing everything a little bit. I’meating more sensibly and notovereating.”

“I’ll have a Dr. Pepper poponce in a while, but not any-thing on a daily basis as before,”Moss said.

Owens, who weighed morethan 300 pounds before thechallenge, can really feel thedifference now, he said.

“Once you lose the weight, you’re not as hungry,” he said.

And, all of them praised thepurpose of this challenge andurge everyone to participate inthe future.

“Once you get the results, you want to keep going,” Owenssaid.

“It wasn’t easy, but it wasworth it,” Hass said.

Five time-tested tips to help with weight lossSince the late 1980s,

Nebraska and Iowa has seenobesity rates skyrocket fromaround 10 percent to more than25 percent – and we’re not alone.More than one third of all Amer-ican adults and nearly one fifthof our children are obese.

Doctors across the countrystress the fact that there isalready a proven – and healthy –means for losing weight. It’s onethat Steven Osborn, M.D., a fam-ily physician with AlegentHealth Clinic in Millard, Neb.,has been prescribing to patientsfor years.

“When patients come to mefor help with weight loss, Iemphasize the importance ofboth exercise as well as diet,” hesays.

The reason he suggests thismethod? It’s time-tested andproven to work. Unfortunately, millions of Americans know all-too-well that this is easier saidthan done. So Osborn also offersup the following tips to help get

you started, with or without thehelp of medication.

Don’t skip meals. Starvingyourself for any length of timeresults in a metabolic slowdownthat makes it hard to lose thoseextra pounds. That’s becauseyour body goes into a “starva-tion” mode and tries to conservecalories. Instead, Osborn sug-gests eating three meals a day, with protein snacks in between.

Choose whole grains. Any-thing made from processed flour, including bread and pasta, rapidly breaks down into sugarin your system. So opt for brownor Indian basmati rice overwhite rice. And if you have tohave bread, Osborn says to limitthe amount and stick to wholegrain products. His general ruleof thumb: if it’s white, don’t eatit.

Follow an actual diet plan.Check out a structured plan, likeSouth Beach, Weight Watchers,or the Alegent Health WeightManagement program to help

stay on track.Calorie count (the DIY

approach to weight loss). Ifyou’re more of a do-it-yourselfer,Dr. Osborn says plain old caloriecounting is a great option. “Youcan look up maintenance caloriecalculators online to figure outwhat your needs are, then cutout 500 calories a day. Thatshould give you a 3,500 caloriedeficit weekly, which equals onepound of weight loss.”

Exercise is a must. Physicalactivity adds a boost to yourmetabolism that keeps youburning calories long after youwrap up your workout. Dr.Osborn suggests patients sched-ule 45 minutes of exercise atleast three times a week. “Car-dio is good and helps burn calo-ries,” he says. “Butresistance/weight training isprobably better.” And don’t for-get that even small changes, liketaking the stairs rather than theelevator, can really add up.

“There’s not any big secret. You just have to set a goal andget organized.”

Ben Moss of Council Bluffsshould know. Moss, 28, the indi-vidual male winner in the GetFit competition, took off 58pounds during the contest, dropping from 198 pounds to140.

“My goal was to get down to138,” he said.

Moss definitely had amethod to his madness. Healternated days between benchlifting and running.

“I was doing a lot of high-repetition, low-weight lifting,”he said. “I was running justabout five miles a day.”

It meant going beyond hisusual exercise regimen, he said.

“I work out pretty regularly, but not like the competition,”Moss said.

He also had to do withoutsome sweets, he said.

“I completely cut out Dr. Pep-per, which I drink a lot of,” headded.

Moss, a former wrestler, wasnot surprised by his success.

“I wrestled pretty much allmy life,” he said. “I knew how toget the weight off.”

He grew up in Council Bluffsand wrestled four years at

Lewis Central High School andthree years at Augsburg Col-lege.

Many people aren’t so confi-dent about losing weight or how

to do it, Moss said.“I think a lot of people don’t

realize you got to have a planand be organized. I thinkwrestling really helped me asfar as that. A lot of people lose afew pounds right away andthen plateau and get discour-aged.”

Moss had two main motivesin the contest, he said.

“The weight I wrestled at incollege was 138 pounds. Iwanted to win the competition.”

Another incentive was thefact that his wife, Nicole, wasalso in the contest. Her team,Heavy Never Again Agreed?,finished third.

“She did really well,” Mosssaid.

The two encouraged eachother, and his wife helped himwith his diet by cooking healthyfood.

“We try to work outtogether,” he said. “We go out tothe track and run together.”

They take turns pulling astroller with their 1-year-oldson, Moss said.

On Sunday, he enjoyedanother affirmation of hiswrestling days.

“Just last night, I was watch-ing two of my friends I wrestledwith at Lewis Central try outfor the Olympic team,” he saidMonday.

Trials were held in Iowa Citythis year, but Moss was able towatch them online, he said.

“It was real cool to be able towatch them,” he said.

Moss didn’t have any sourgrapes over it, though.

“I’ve been done wrestling forseveral years,” he said. “Thoseguys are on another level.”

Moss saw the Get Fit compe-tition as a good incentive to loseweight – and he liked the factthat it was after the holidaysand bowl games were over.

“I think the competition isgreat, in terms of actually get-ting people to get the ballrolling,” he said.

Moss got a few tips from foodscientists at ConAgra Foodsheadquarters, where he worksin the shipping department ofthe pilot plant. He is currentlytaking long-distance classes atAugsburg to finish a degree inbusiness management.

The Mosses have two sons, ages 5 and 1.

There is no magic bullet forweight loss.

Just ask Ashley Cunning-ham, the winner of The DailyNonpareil’s Get Fit Challengeindividual weight loss for afemale participant.

She had to sweat her way tovictory.

“My friends keep asking me,‘What did you do to lose theweight?’” she said. “Honestly, Iate better and worked out.”

It sounds so simple: Eat lessand move more.

In fact, a recent study in the“American Journal of Preventa-tive Medicine” found the simpleprocess to be the best way to loseweight.

Eating less fat and exercis-ing led to people losing weightin the study. The study alsofound that the use of prescrip-tion diet pills helped in somecases as well.

But what didn’t work were

liquid diets, nonprescription dietpills and other popular diet fads. The study, titled “SuccessfulWeight Loss Among Obese U.S.Adults,” said these efforts hadno association with successfulweight loss.

Cunningham agreed: Portioncontrol and working out werethe keys to her success and col-lecting the $250 prize.

“I tried to work out every day,or at least six times a week,” shesaid.

She varied her workoutsbetween using an ellipticalmachine and a treadmill. Shetook free classes offered at hergym, and if she was short ontime, she ran outside. In theend, she shed 32 pounds or 17.3percent of her total weight.

The 27-year-old said heractive job in the food and bever-age service industry keeps heron her feet all day, and now afterlosing the weight, she feels inbetter shape to face her dailychallenges.

“My eating habits have mademe feel better,” she said.“Instead of getting fast food, I’meating something healthy.”

No secret to how Moss lost 58 pounds

In late March, the National Museum of Natural History in Wash-ington, D.C. revealed a life-size replica of Titanoboa, a prehistoricsnake the length of a school bus. Scientists figured the snake weighedabout 2,500 pounds.

The Daily Nonpareil’s Get Fit contestants lost enough weight tostand neck and neck with the monster snake.

Out of the 122 teams that started The Daily Nonpareil’s Get FitChallenge in January, 51 complete teams weighed out and dropped2,759 pounds, which amounts to 6.10 percent body fat. The top team– Alanebawa – lost 20.54 percent body weight.

Individually, 239 contestants weighed out and lost 3,098 pounds, or5.83 percent. The individual winners – Ashley Cunningham and BenMoss – lost 17.30 and 29.29 percent body weight respectively.

In the end, the average percentage lost (6.10) may not seem likemuch compared to the winning team’s percentage (20.54), but losingeven 5 percent of your body weight yields an array of benefits.

According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, losingjust 5 to 10 percent of your weight will lower your risk for heart dis-ease and other conditions, including diabetes and certain types of can-cer, such as breast, uterus and colon.

Staying physically active has other benefits:■ Strengthens your lungs■ Strengthens your muscles and keeps your joints in good condi-

tion■ Gives you more energy■ Helps you relax and cope better with stress■ Builds confidence

Cunningham said she partici-pated in Get Fit in 2011 as well, with her team finishing in sixthplace.

She said this year she is espe-cially motivated to keep the weightoff because she is getting marriedin September to her fiancé, ChrisCongdon, who was on the overallwinning team this year.

“It was easier both doing ittogether,” Cunningham said of thecouple’s weight loss. “I plan to keepgoing until I reach my goal.”

She said she would like to lose11 more pounds. If she could losethe weight, she would no longer beconsidered “overweight” on thebody mass index chart.

The body mass index charttakes a person’s height and weightand calculates a body mass index,or BMI. If the BMI falls below 18.5,you are underweight, normal isbetween 18.5 and 24.9, overweightis between 25 and 29.9, and any-thing over 30 is considered obese.

For Cunningham, her weightloss is more than just about feelingmore fit, but also about feelingmore confident.

“My confidence has went wayup,” she said. “I am definitely notas self-conscious as I was when Iam getting dressed.”

And she wants to replace thelost weight with muscle tone.

“I’m trying to tone up more, I’vebeen lifting more weights,” shesaid.

While she is feeling less self-conscious, healthier and in bettershape, she knows she still hassome hard work left to attain her

final goal.Toward the end of the competi-

tion, she said shedding the poundswas getting more difficult. Shewasn’t losing the weight as rapidlyas she did in the beginning.Because of that, she knows the last11 pounds will be the hardest.

“I feel motivated to accomplishmy goal,” she said.
