For many years now, the City has shown its belief in the great importance of culture by devoting time and resources to artists and artisans, helping them to perform, inno-vate and distinguish themselves at the local, national and international level. In 2005, Montréal codified this belief by adopting its Cultural Development Policy. Two years later came the 2007–2017 Action Plan, which arose from Rendez-Vous Novembre 2007 – Montréal, Cultural Metropolis. These two unifying projects have secured the commitment of many different partners.

This summer, more than ever, Montréal will be overflowing with cultural activities. The international community sees Montréal not only as a city with an excellent quality of life, but also as a true cultural metropo-lis, a place where creativity is supported, encouraged and highlighted. We can be proud of our artists, of their achievements in Québec and Canada and on the world’s biggest stages. This appreciation reflects a cultural scene that is second to none and extends over all of Montréal, in all fields of endeavour.

We invite Montrealers to take advantage of this full schedule of artistic and cultural events throughout the summer season. More than 350 shows and activities, most of them free, will liven up the city’s many parks and the different venues that form its cultural network. The art of choreogra-phy will be a special highlight of this year’s Théâtre de Verdure, thanks to a busy

program of dance shows and dance-related films. La Roulotte Travelling Theatre revi-ves a classic children’s tale, Pinocchio, in a new production that is sure to please both young and old.

Once upon a time there lived a small piece of wood…”So begins the story of the world’s most famous puppet, Pinocchio, who returns to La Roulotte after a 55-year absence.Still just as rebellious and reckless as ever, the little wooden pup-pet clings hard to his cherished dream of one day becoming a real boy. But this dream will lead him on many difficult adventures. He must survive the wrath of Mangiafuoco, the fiery director of the Great Marionette Theatre. He must defeat the trickery of Mr. Fox and his sidekick Mr. Cat. He must escape from the Land of Toys and save his father, Geppetto, who is imprisoned in the belly of a giant fish. Fortunately for Pinocchio, his faithful friend the Talking Cricket is never far away !

Here as elsewhere, the dream of a clean, modern city leads to the destruction of old neighbour-hoods.
