With a state as diverse in activities as it is in topography, the
hardest decision a visitor to Utah often has to make is where to begin. At least you’ve checked off step number one...you’re here! While some say I might just be a little biased (true), I’m here to tell you that Utah’s winter months all begin and end with the SNOW—500 annual average inches of the lightest, fluffiest, most powder-perfect snowflakes on the planet. They don’t call it The Greatest Snow on Earth® for nothing! Not only are Utah resorts covered with Mother Nature’s equivalent of 800 thread-count bed sheets, but they are the most accessible in the world. Eleven of Utah’s 14 ski areas are less than an hour from the airport and downtown Salt Lake City—four of those 11 are even serviced by Salt Lake City’s metro bus routes. Ease of access just doesn’t get any more convenient.
If you think my gushing over Utah skiing is a case of homegrown bias, just ask the 40,000 skiers who participated in the 2011 SKI magazine reader survey. Utah resorts ranked in the top spot in 10 of the 18 categories surveyed, including Deer Valley Resort landing the overall number one spot for an unprecedented four years in a row. After exploring Utah’s slopes, be sure to save a little energy as five national parks, seven national monuments, two national recreation areas, six national forests and more than 40 state parks are waiting for your next adventure. Outdoor recreation not your thing? NBA basketball, symphony, live music, galleries, shopping, spas and a vast array of other activities abound...all in Utah. For more information on all of Utah’s incredible wintertime activities including the latest snowfall stats, lodging options, details about your favorite ski
resort and more, check out SkiUtah.com. For a broader perspective of what’s available outside of our mountain playgrounds, Getaway Magazine has you covered. From snow-capped peaks to red rock vistas—Utah’s got something unforgettable waiting for you. Now you’re here, get after it!

18 getaway SALT LAKE CITY, PROVO & PARK CITY
Sure, you can golf in Utah. And everyone knows you can ski in Utah. But
once spring makes its way to the Rockies you can do both in one day—hit the ski lifts in the morning and then head to the golf course or a lower elevation hike in the afternoon. Welcome to Salt Lake City, where access is everything and the ski slope is still covered, even after the valley thaws and greens. Ski coats are exchanged for t-shirts, and thermal layers are shed. During March, April and May, ski pants are sometimes traded out altogether for a pair of shorts. And sometimes the spring ski crowd decks out in costume. You never know what you’ll find during the sunny, blue-sky, corn-snow days on the ski hill. But it’s a fun culture to jump into. Rick Gardner, a local skier who notches close to 80 ski days
a year, every year, says, “In the spring interest in skiing dies down as people’s minds turn to other events, so the resorts are less crowded. It’s the die-hards who are still on the hill and there is no such thing as a bad day of skiing to those guys so everyone is happy.” Snowbird, being the last resort to close each season, stays open full time until the first or second week in May, and then they open only on the weekend, for as long as conditions permit. The base of Snowbird Ski Resort’s tram, up Little Cottonwood Canyon, sits at around 8100 feet. The top of the tram settles on Hidden Peak at just under 11,000 feet. There have been years when die-hard skiers celebrated the 4th of July on the Snowbird slopes at 11,000 feet. As Snowbird slowly closes

down one lift at a time, the price of a ski pass drops. Gardner says he thinks they feel guilty about charging full price when they don’t have all the options open to people. The price drop is also to help attract more skiers to the final, fun and frolicking days on the hill. Most of Utah’s resorts close mid-April, providing 4 to 6 weeks of sweet spring ski days, while Snowbird Ski Resort holds out to the bitter end, hosting all the spring ski bunnies until the snow melts out from under them. They also offer a special “Spring-Only” season pass. One begins March 1 and the other April 1, and both are valid until the end of the season. For current pricing, contact Snowbird Mountain Resort. “Last year some of the best skiing was the first of May,” says Gardner. Bill Weidner, another dedicated Utah skier who racks 70 to 100 days each year got specific about last spring. “One of my most memorable spring skiing experiences was at the end of April last year, it became winter again. We got 7 feet of snow in 4 days so we skied knee-deep powder for 4 days in a row. The snow took us through Father’s Day—the first official day of summer.”
Gardner adds, “I’ve had some of my best days of skiing mid to late April.” He explains that the snow is settled so you don’t sink, and the top loosens and makes up the crumbly snow known as corn. “The snow is fun to ski,” says Gardner, “and it’s not cold.” He warns against the potential sharpness of the snow if you opt for wearing shorts. Spring skiers all seem to enjoy the same specific aspects that spring skiing offers— it’s about skiing right onto the lift, beautiful corn snow and 50 degree days. The Canyons resort hosts their annual Spring Grüv, which includes parties, concerts, pond skimming and contests. Alta celebrates spring with complimentary wine and appetizers for the Lodge guests on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and serves lunch on the sundeck and complimentary lunch picnics on the ski slopes. They also bring in high performance ski demos at a
special rate. For more details on spring specials at the ski resorts see: www.skiutah.com/whitesale.And though the green in the valley may not have you thinking “skiing,” Utah’s Greatest Snow on Earth may still be available to help you celebrate the 4th of July. And if you feel like it, you can wear whatever you want—even a red, white and blue tutu.

For 81 years, this beloved Utah icon has reached a remarkable milestone as
the second oldest Restaurant in Utah. Unfortunately, Ruth didn’t live to see it. She passed away in November of 1989 at the age of 94. She was a great storyteller and spirited woman whose language could make a gangster blush. In 1930, she started the diner as Ruth’s Hamburgers. After many years of flipping burgers downtown, Ruth’s building was sold and demolished. So, she bought a Salt Lake Trolley Car and moved it up Historical Emigration Canyon where she reopened in 1949. Ruth built an apartment
onto the back of her trolley car (it’s now the lower dining room) and lived on the property alone with her little Chihuahua dogs for almost 40 years. The extensive menu offers American Comfort food, serving breakfast until 4 p.m., and lunch and dinner 7 days a week. Ruth’s breakfast selections include Ruth’s famous mile-high biscuits served with country gravy, pecan cinnamon roll French toast, corned beef hash and eggs, numerous versions of eggs Benedict and all your breakfast favorites. Lunch selections include maple BBQ salmon salad, Ruth’s burgers, a variety of specialty sandwiches
and salads, and entrees for our vegetarian and vegan friends. Dinners include specialty salads, sandwiches, Ruth’s burgers, and entrees like, pot roast, raspberry chicken, fresh salmon, pork tenderloin and Grandma Claire’s baked Mac and Cheese. Ruth’s Diner is located at 4160 Emigration Canyon Road, 2 miles east of the Hogle Zoo and just 10 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City.

There’s Nothing Like This Country in All the World:

ByJamesV.D’Arc
PlanMyGetaway.com 39
When the American colonies were fighting for independence
from Great Britain in the 1770s, southern Utah was a vast wilderness populated mostly by Paiute Indians. The area had been traversed by the Catholic fathers only once, briefly, in 1776, on their way from Mexico to California. Nevertheless, the war for colonial independence was fought—and won—amidst the alpine splendor of the Dixie National Forest above Cedar City and only a few miles east of Cedar Breaks National Monument. How, you ask? It happened when Hollywood came to town. Southern Utah’s unique combination of red rock, lush forests and abundant streams was ripe for Hollywood motion pictures when Cedar City residents and entrepreneurs Gronway, Chauncey and Whit Parry, owners of the transportation concession in Zion National Park, enticed famous Western star Tom Mix to make TheDeadwoodCoach in that region in 1924. After that, numerous Hollywood movies were made throughout scenic Iron County and in Zion National Park—films that included Ramona,TheShepherdoftheHillsandInOldArizona, the first all-talking Western that earned its star, Warner Baxter, his only Academy Award. The Parry brothers achieved a milestone for moviemaking in Utah when, in 1939, they convinced legendary director
John Ford and 20th Century-Fox to film DrumsAlongtheMohawk in the forested regions, broken by expansive meadows, near Cedar Breaks and at Duck Creek, now clustered with vacation homes. This drama of a young couple, played by Claudette Colbert and Henry Fonda, who attempt to establish their farm in upstate New York’s Mohawk Valley amid British-inspired Indian raids during the American Revolution, was based on the best-selling novel by Walter Edmunds.
Fox decided to film this action drama in the relatively new and expensive medium of Technicolor, used in less than five percent of the 500 feature films made each year by the major studios. Ford praised Utah’s “never-failing blue skies, cloudless days, the absence of mist, and all-around ideal picture-making conditions” at the 10,300 foot elevation. “I decided it was perfect on my first inspection of the Cedar mountain
region,” said the veteran director who had visited Utah the previous year to film part of Stagecoach with John Wayne in Monument Valley. A complete tent city, dubbed “Fort Drums” was built just off present day State Road 143 to accommodate the complement of 250 cast and crew for the five weeks spent filming at nearby Sidney Valley and at Duck Creek. Each tent had hot and cold running water, electric lights and oil heaters, necessary for the cold evenings at such high
elevations, even during the summer. The contract with the Anderson Company specified “janitor and/or maid service to furnish and change all towels and linens not less than twice per week” and that sleeping quarters consist of “coil spring beds, clean mattresses of first class quality, sheets, pillow cases and an adequate number of blankets.” A camp newspaper was published and entertainment

Utah’s DixieST. GEORGE
Located in the southwestern corner of Utah is the popular desert community
of St. George. Originally settled in 1861 by Mormon pioneers to farm cotton due to the area’s warm weather, St. George became known as Utah’s Dixie.
Warm weather may have opened the door to this region but it’s the abundance of scenic beauty, recreation and adventure that has made St. George one of the fastest growing communities and vacation hotspots in the recent decades.
St. George is easy to get to. Located on the Interstate-15 corridor 300 miles south of Salt Lake City and 120 miles north of Las Vegas, St. George is ideally situated for quick weekend getaways for local travelers and is an ideal hub for tourists visiting the many nearby national parks and recreation areas.
PLACES TO SEE Within a short drive of St. George are some of the world’s most magnificent parks and recreation areas. Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon and Lake Powell are all within three hours or less; Zion is less than an hour away. Other places equally as impressive but less known are Snow Canyon State Park, located eight miles from St. George in the town of Ivins, and Red Cliffs Recreation Area, 14 miles northeast of St. George just off the Interstate-15 freeway.
THINGS TO DOOften referred to as the other Palm Springs, St. George is dotted with world class spas and golf courses with scenery that will make keeping your eye on the ball more difficult than ever. The old Water Tower, rising nearly 100 feet above the ground, serves as an unmistakable landmark for Trolley Square, a unique piece of living history linking Salt Lake City’s past to its future.
Salt Lake City founder Brigham Young designated this area of the city the Tenth Ward in 1847. The 10-acre block later served as the state fairgrounds, until Union Pacific railroad magnate E.H. Harriman decided this was to be the location for his state-of-the-art trolley system. The brick buildings housed the Utah Light and Railway Company, serving as home base for Salt Lake’s showcase trolley system.
Saved from demolition in 1972 and designated a National Historic Site in 1993, the hundred-year-old trolley barn is now home to an amazing array of entertainment, restaurants and one of-a- kind shops. It is a refreshing change from today’s modern-day mall. While strolling down the brick-lined paths, you’ll be transported back to a kinder, gentler time.

including the projection of movies was provided each evening. A strict regimen was established—up at five o’clock for makeup and wardrobe and lights out by eleven o’clock. “It was indeed a democratic camp,” wrote a newspaper reporter who visited the location, “fashioned in the good American way of ‘free and equal.’”
John Ford, together with actors Henry Fonda, Claudette Colbert and Ward Bond, were housed with the rest of the cast and crew. Merle Morris, a driver for the Parry’s transportation company, remembered how kind the famous actress was in attending frequent evening dances. Morris, who was a good dancer, enjoyed taking a few spins himself with the star on the dance floor. Kanab resident Jackie Hamblin Rife—later a noted extra and stuntwoman—was a youngster at the time
Drumswas in production. She was an extra in a scene that never made it into the finished film. “The one scene I that do remember was when an Indian scalped me,” Rife recalled. “He came at me with a tomahawk and I was terrified.” Mary Gaye Evans of Parowan, seven years old at the time, remembered that “it was the
most wonderful summer! I just loved it. The [movie] Indians were so good to us children. They made cradles and dolls out of wood from the quaking aspen trees.” In the climactic scene in Drums, Evans was among the many children inside the fort that was attacked by Indians. “I could hear the gunshots from inside the fort, but I knew that it was play acting. It was more exciting than scary because I was in the fort with a lot of our good friends and neighbors who were hired as extras.” The fort,
she remembered with emphasis after 69 years, “wasn’t just a front. It was built like a real fort.” When the massive stone and log structure in Sidney Valley was dismantled after filming, local ranchers used the logs for barns, vacation homes and other purposes. When the studio company left, it was estimated that over $300,000 had been pumped into the economy, a boon to
Depression-era rural Utah. For Henry Fonda,
the experience was one of a lifetime. “There’s
something in the air up here that makes for good
fellowship, and we make the most of it,” he observed
during the film’s production. “I don’t believe that any of us ever
enjoyed a location more than this. It’s a real health resort and, as for the scenery—there’s nothing like this country in all the world.”

GRACIE’S
Salt Lake’s first and only “gastropub,” a British term for a public house which
specializes in high-quality food a step above the more basic “pub grub.” Gracie’s has a large selection of sandwiches, salads and appetizers but they are unlike any you’ve had before. And the difference is Chef Sean. At Gracie’s he’s created a delicious menu including items that you might expect and indulgent recipes that will catch you by surprise—in the best possible way. You owe it yourself to try Chef Sean’s lemon-steamed halibut—it melts in your mouth. His is not the typical “Bar Food”
yet the menu is very reasonably priced. Every Saturday & Sunday between 10am–2pm Gracie’s serves an amazing Brunch— a definite don’t miss when you’re in Salt Lake. At Gracie’s the two bars are fully stocked with the best of the top shelf liquors, microbrews and an amazingly comprehensive wine collection. The specialty cocktails are mixtures that you can only get in Utah and only at Gracie’s. Gracie’s has two patios providing spectacular views of the Salt Lake skyline with majestic mountains in the background. With 20 screens
boasting all major sports packages, Gracie’s is a great place to catch your game while you are in Salt Lake. Wednesday through Saturday you can enjoy live music and Gracie’s game room has pool tables, darts, video games, free shuffle board, even the classic corn toss game. Come settle in for a beer and a burger, a cold draft and some wings and some serious TV sports. Gracie’s dresses up or dresses down and everyone (21 and older) is welcome. While you are in Salt Lake, let Gracie’s be your favorite bar.

Man-cations have become a prevalent sighting in Utah for
the past few years. Just walk through any après ski lodge in Park City in the winter, or pass through a local watering hole in Salt Lake in the summer after a day golfing or mountain biking. You will see tables filled with four or five male friends laughing and recapping the day’s extreme sport adventure or tall tale of their fly fishing. It’s a contagious feel-good atmosphere wherever you see them. It’s the latest travel trend. 34 percent of men in a recent survey said they take at least one man-cation every year. Some estimated about 20 million American men vacation this way each year. And that doesn’t include all the male trippers from other countries visiting here. Age groups vary but most men are married and
between 30 and 55 years old. Utah is a top destination, given the broad range of recreation and landscape. Themed trips are most popular for this male bonding
phenomenon. I once met a man-cation in Las Vegas that had traveled all the way from London just to see a concert. Sporting events are a huge attraction. I have a friend who goes heli-skiing each year with his buddies. Some themes are chosen for foodies, wine enthusiasts, golfing, games,
fights, gambling, hunting, white water rafting, rock climbing and most popular, bachelor parties. Various man-cations try a different theme each year and some look forward the same tradition each year. There are certainly subtleties to male bonding and you must be prepared for the goofing, fighting, bragging, humiliating, drinking, jeering, and above all, the good humor brought by the memorable experiences. Make sure you have a wide variety of personalities to keep the laughs coming and the events on schedule. There comes a time to forget the women, worries, stresses, and round up all the boys for a new man-cation destination, whether it is for adventure and exhilaration, or rest and relaxation. It’s certainly not a new concept, just a new expression.
