APOLOGY

In the last issue of TIDINGS, when reporting on the imminent loss of our dentistry services, it was wrongly suggested that the Marisco Medical Practice was responsible for a rise in rents that had led to this move. We wish to clarify that the Practice is not the dentist's landlord and has no involvement in the amount of rent that was proposed to be charged to the dentist. This is an apology for that mis-statement and an expression of regret for the confusion it caused.

GETTING KNITTING!

Our cover photo shows the first strands of what we hope will be a long running saga! It shows members of the Carnival working party looking at the proto-type bunting now being knitted to go along the route of the Carnival Parade. A big thank you to Sue Rowbotham & Betty Stokes [R & L in our picture] for this initiative AND to all those now helping them. When the photo was taken we thought that FOUR MILES of bunting was needed… but such has been the enthusiasm generated it looks as though FIVE MILES is now a distinct possibility. Lots of balls of wool are being brought to the Coastal Centre where there is also available a pattern for those who would like to knit at home!

The “WHAT’S ON” weekly update of events in our area is not being printed at the moment but we hope it will come out again in March. It is available on line at http://www.coastalbreeze.co.uk/

OVERHEARD IN THE BOOK IN HAND… A farmer from Withern was telling another from Theddlethorpe about how his bull had been failing in his duty so he had to go & ask the advice of the vet who gave him some pills which he gave to the bull. “Did they work?” asked the Theddlethorpe farmer. “Work?” the Withern man replied. “He not only serviced all my cows but broke out the field & serviced by neighbour’s cows as well.” The Theddlethorpe farmer unsurprisingly was mightily impressed & asked what the pills were. “I don’t know what they are called,” the other replied, “but they taste a bit like peppermint.” I did not catch the rest of the conversation as the two retired to a shady part of the bar to engage in some sort of financial transaction.

MYSTERY PHOTO FROM AROUND 1957

THAT WAS THE LOEWEN THAT WAS

The news that some of the Lowen’s seating is disappearing is a cue to remember how the cinema began back in June 1960 when J.W. Green purchased the former Silver Dollar amusement arcade on the Quebec Road…..

He demolished it & in its place he built the 280 seat Bijou Cinema which opened on 10th July 1981 with Roger Moore in “For Your Eyes Only”. In 1984 the cinema was equipped with a brand new theatre organ which was built (over a three year period) by David Hill. In 1985 the cinema was re-opened under new management as the Loewen Cinema & in 1995 a second auditorium was added, which has a seating capacity of 70. In 1999 it was repainted and Dolby Stereo sound installed. Today the cinema caters for young & old alike with parties for children & bingo sessions before afternoon screenings! And if you are lucky you will catch Loewen’s Marcus Earl giving a run-down on a film’s background: You come away entertained but also enlightened! And the seating? You are not going to have

to bring your own deck chair. By Easter new double seats [LEFT] will replace all but the first two rows of Screen One.

So you will then have the choice of either spreading yourself or bring along someone to cuddle up to!

THIS DOES!

THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN…

GOOD NEWS ON LITTER & THE BLIGHT OF DOG DROPPINGS

A new Environmental Crime Officer has been recruited by East Lindsey District Council ~ with another soon to be appointed ~ as part of a drive to reduce litter & dog fouling. Newly appointed Paul Carville will be proactive in patrolling the district’s hotspot areas with the powers to issue on the spot Fixed Penalty Notices of £100 & to carry out investigations of any witnessed offences. Paul & his colleague will be equipped with body cameras, & will be speaking to members of the public & those running our businesses to gather information on problem areas & to provide information on environmental crime & the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO), which is in force in some areas of the district. Businesses which have a problem of litter outside their premises will be receiving a visit. Paul & his colleague will also have new vans which will be equipped with dash cams which while the vans are out on patrol will be able to capture any littering offences from vehicles in the district. They will also be looking at a crackdown on fly tipping with the use of covert cameras as an additional tool to catch the offenders. Portfolio Holder for Operational Services, Councillor Sandra Harrison said, “Appointing Environmental Crime Officers is an investment in a cleaner environment for our community. Our team will be more visible on the streets, getting to know where the issues are occurring and fining people who are found to be littering our public spaces.”

Paul added “I’m looking forward to getting stuck in to this new role. My background is enforcement so I will be able to use my skills here to help the Council enforce against the offences that blight the communities”. People who fail to comply will be issued with a £100 Fixed Penalty Notice and anyone who fails to pay a Fixed Penalty Notice may be prosecuted for the offence. So from now on if you spot dog fouling or littering report it:

Like the Methodist & Roman Catholic Churches the Salvation Army is linked with what you might call “parent” bodies in Louth. For the Salvation Army minister Major Rudi Bruinwoud who looks after the Salvation Army in its home near the bus station in Louth as well as in its Mablethorpe home ~ the well-appointed building which used to be the Job Centre in Somersby Avenue ~ the news that he was going to have help ~ of a very vigorous nature ~ came as a great delight.

Rachel Barker [PHOTO RIGHT] grew up in Derbyshire & moved to the Orkneys very much in a spirit of adventure. It was here that she found her calling… and it came as something of a shock to her that this involved being sent yet further north to the Shetlands. This really was being thrown in at the deep end for her training was very much a matter of learning by doing. With next to no support in this far out-post of the Salvation Army’s mission she built up a resilient team from all sorts of ages & backgrounds turning, in many cases, people who had felt washed up on those shores as unwanted driftwood into motivated members of a new & vibrant community. At the end of her ministry there Rachel imagined she would be going home to Derbyshire: but the Army had other ideas. They perceived that there was a great opportunity to expand its work in Mablethorpe: so she is now officially the S.A.’s Programme Development Worker here. As Rachel has a large family of her own (a daughter in the Orkneys, another in Aberdeen & 6 children still with her) there was no accommodation for her in Mablethorpe so she is living in Louth ~ although two of her teenagers are now studying at CLIP.

A WARM WELCOME TO RACHEL BAKER THE NEW SALVATION ARMY ENVOY

How Rachel’s ministry evolves in Mablethorpe, she says, will be up to the 30 or so strong community here… but the word is that they are very much up to the challenge of helping her see what the needs of Mablethorpe might be that can be answered with the great facilities of the Somersby Avenue Salvation Army. Rachel (a fan of Justin Welby!) is keen to work alongside other church leaders & members of our community in the coming (hopefully exciting) years ahead!

Rachel can be contacted on 01507 475 988 or at the Worship on Sundays at 10-30am, on Wednesdays at 2pm, & at the 9-30am Coffee Club on Saturdays.

AND WHILE ON THE SUBJECTY OF DOGS & CINEMAS…

A man arrived at the Loewen just after the film had started &, as his eyes adjusted to the darkness, he was surprised to see a dog sitting beside a lady in the row in front of him: & the dog had its eyes fixed on the screen. Not only that, but in the happy bits the dog wagged its tail & in the sad bits its ears went all droopy & in the scary bits it hid under the seat. After the show was over, the man commented on this to the lady. "Your dog really seemed to enjoy that film. I'm amazed!“ "Yes, I can't believe it myself," came the reply. "He hated the book.”

RIGHT: Cllr Helen Parkhurst introducing the observance in the presence of our Deputy Mayor Cllr Bob Dawes. This year the day had a special focus on the genocide in Rwanda. Generously lent material illustrating that tragedy formed part of the library’s most informative display.

The ceremony ended with particular items being placed on the central carpet, each item representing something of significance in a home. If we were torn away from our own home what in particular would leave a great gap in our lives? Look at the items in the photograph below & ponder on what they represent & think then of what is of special value to you.

A poem by Mary Parker which she read during the Mablethorpe Act of Observance

THE INNOCENTS The final solution, what did it mean?

The disposal of people that were, unclean? Faces of angels, eyes full of trust,

Used to fuel fires and turned to dust.

The chosen ones, children and the weak, Heads shaven, unclothed, future bleak.

Led to showers that fed no waters, no pity, Only indignities, fear, gas and then eternity.

Precious mementoes of happier times, Sent to “Canada” to be searched for dimes.

The scavengers gorged on gifts from the “dead” While the innocents were left… unfed.

THE MABLETHORPE AREA PARTNERSHIP: OUR TOWN CENTRE’S FUTURE

On the resignation of Peter Rigglesford the group held an Extraordinary General Meeting & elected a new committee with many of the Group’s volunteers coming forward to serve on it. We wish good luck to the new Chair Pam Cutts [PHOTO BELOW]

who can be contacted by email [email protected]

Tributes were paid to Peter at the Patients Group EGM & at the Coastal Community Team meeting in January noting the debt Mablethorpe owes to enormous enthusiasm & dedication Peter has devoted to our locality.

At the EGM Dr Simon Lowe reported how because the practice now has a full staff of doctors & practitioners he would hopefully have more time to promote the work of the Patients Group. It now runs the Info Centre & Refreshment point Monday to Friday helping patients before & after their appointments.

At its January Meeting MAP welcomed the news that government funding of up to £30 million was currently available for town centres. In reply to an approach on behalf of MAP & the Coastal Community Team we received a reply from Laura Hurley, the Head of the Future High Streets Fund for the Ministry of Housing’s Cities & Local Growth Unit, saying that they would be pleased to receive an expression of interest on behalf of Mablethorpe which would be eligible for such funding.

This communication was passed on to ELDC which is now actively working on putting forward an application on behalf of Mablethorpe.

The Expression of Interest has to be in by the end of March & so MAP has asked Janet Stubbs to bring together the thoughts of businesses in our town centre. It would be very good to be able to pedestrianize a part of our High Street: but we know the difficulties this causes when the market is on what route should cars & buses take?

Anyone with brain-waves in this respect ~ or with other ideas about how our High Street could be improved ~ should email the Coastal Centre on [email protected] marking the email FUTURE HIGH STREET!

This is a real opportunity for Mablethorpe & it is important that we work together with ELDC in making a really good case for this possible injection of major capital.

DO GET WELL SOON, JOHN!

In the January issue of the MERIDALE NEWS Janet Shields, Chairman of the Meridale Organization sent good wishes to John Monk currently in hospital in Grimsby. Many others in our community who have so much appreciated all John has done for us here in Mablethorpe & Sutton would wish to echo those words: We join with Meridale in wishing John a speedy return!

MOIRA MORGAN R.I.P.

Moira passed away peacefully in hospital in Skegness on January 23rd having only recently retired from our Town Council through ill health.

She had served as both a Town & County Councillor & her work for education & for the Carnival was particularly appreciated.

Moira was also Deputy Mayor between 2008 & 2010.

MAKING MUSIC IN MABLETHORPE

We began in November 2018 with the aim of creating a community orchestra for Mablethorpe & Sutton-on-Sea. Our aim is to get local residents to get involved in making music & to perform in community & private events. We currently have 5 members plus a musical director, playing mostly woodwind instruments, but would love more people to join us. We don't mind what instruments new members play or what level they're at: we'll do our best to integrate them into the group. We do make a small charge per session, but the first session is free.

Music is a great way to relieve stress & exercise the brain cells, as well as fingers. It's also great fun & you get to make new friends.

We have several bookings already for 2019, including performing at the Nebula Festival in Lincoln.

We're holding an Afternoon Tea & Cakes Concert on March 25th at the Evangelical Church, Old Trusthorpe Road, Sutton-on-Sea, LN12 2LL between 2 & 4pm to raise funds for the group. Tickets are £3 each or £3.73 if purchased online. More details are on our website. https://mablethorpemusicians.webs.com/ If you're able to come to the event, to meet us & see what we do, then please let me know, & then your ticket will be free of charge!

Also, if you would like us to play at any of the events you're involved in organising, then please let us know. As a not-for-profit organisation we don't charge but would appreciate being able to put out collection buckets for donations where we perform.

I'm happy to provide more information, please do not hesitate to contact me. Many thanks,

~ Kay Mills

RECYCLING CRISP PACKETS

At its last meeting the Town Council decided to endorse a scheme for re-cycling crisp packets. Rather than throwing packets away residents are invited to bring them to the Meridale where they will be collected in a scheme being pioneered by Walkers Crisps in association with TerraCycle a US based private firm which specializes in recycling the “non-recyclable” … pens, plastic gloves & ~ crisp packets.

Working with retailers, manufacturers, municipalities, & small businesses across 20 different countries TerraCycle is currently diverting millions of pounds of waste from landfills & incinerators each month. More info on www.terracycle.com/en-US/

THE COASTAL COMMUNITY TEAM

The Team is now meeting monthly on the second Thursday of each month at 7pm in the Mablethorpe Council Chamber.

The CCT is part of a network of coastal teams circling the country clockwise from Cumberland to Northumberland.

The Team brings together our statutory, business & community groups with members nominated (aiming to represent all sectors) by Mablethorpe Area Partnership.

At its January meeting it was decided that members of the public would be very welcome at its meetings & would be able to speak with the Chair’s permission. The February meeting received an update on the application for funding new chalets on the Sutton-on-Sea foreshore & on the application for funding a major upgrade of the Mablethorpe High Street.

The CCT is also able to consider problems that face all seaside towns & to learn from how they are being faced by other resorts.

Currently one of the topics being discussed by the Alliance is the problem of parking. The Wells-next-the-Sea CCT asks “How can we accommodate day visitor vehicular traffic so as not to clog up the town but at the same time to provide an efficient & welcoming parking solution for visitors?”

This rang bells with the CCT of Bude where in the peak season, with the population three times larger than usual, the situation is described as “manic”. That income from parking charges goes to Cornwall Council does not help. “The main problem with small towns is the infrastructure of yesteryear & the inability to meet the cost of better public transport park & ride schemes.”

• Would a multi-storey car park near the beach appeal?

A GOODBYE IN THE SKY

Earlier this month, Tornados returned to the UK for the last time, to RAF Marham in Norfolk, ending nearly 40 years in service. Three days of farewell flypasts by the Tornados will now take place as the jet is retired from service. The jets will criss-cross locations across the UK over the 19th to 21st February with a flight over Donna Nook taking place towards the end of the Tuesday flypast.

Introduced in 1979 as the GR1, the aircraft was first used in combat during the First Gulf War in 1991. Upgraded to the GR4 model it was then used over the skies of Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria.

The farewell tour will see the jets flying over about 35 military locations, including the National Memorial Arboretum, RAF bases and the factories in Lancashire where they were built.

Last month, the Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson paid tribute to the Tornado calling it "an amazing aircraft that has inspired so many". He then went on to announce that nine of the UK's next generation F-35 Lightning stealth fighter jets are now ready to be deployed on operations for the first time. Will we soon see them on exercises along our coast?
