This presentation will assist you to begin planning for implementation of
the NSW syllabuses for the Australian curriculum. It includes:

Key messages: The new syllabuses
• New syllabuses for the Australian curriculum were made available online on 16th October 2012:
o English K-10
o Mathematics K-10
o Science K-10 (incorporating Science and Technology K-6)
o History K-10.
• The Board of Studies NSW has embedded the Australian curriculum content into these new syllabus documents.
• NSW teachers will use these new syllabuses to teach the Australian curriculum.
• Implementation of the new syllabuses will not begin before 2014.

Syllabus timeline
• All schools are to continue to use the existing NSW K-12
syllabuses for 2012 and 2013.
• Support materials will become available throughout 2012
and 2013.
• 2013 is a year for teachers to become familiar with the
new syllabuses and support materials.
• The following screen may assist in thinking about the
school’s implementation timeline.

Enhanced funding in NSW public schools
• Enhanced funding has been provided to support syllabus implementation in NSW public schools in 2013 and 2014.
• Additional professional learning funds will be distributed to each school based on the current Teacher Professional Learning funding allocation methodology.
• Details will be provided in the near future.

Additional School Development Day
In 2013 an additional School Development Day will :
• be available to provide additional time for principals and staff to engage in planning, professional learning and programming activities.
• be held on the second day of Term 2 2013, Tuesday 30 April.

Expert support and advice for schools
• In 2012 NSW Curriculum and Learning Innovation Centre will
continue to develop curriculum support and advice for the NSW
syllabuses for the Australian curriculum.
• In 2013 the new Primary and Secondary Curriculum areas of the
Department’s Public Schools Portfolio will provide expert policy
advice and curriculum support for new and challenging aspects of
syllabus implementation.

Online access
• Teachers will have access to:
o advice on implementing the new syllabuses.
o registered professional learning courses and resources.
o nationally and locally sourced digital curriculum resources.
o a communication network to encourage collegial support through communities of practice and to support use of social media tools such as Maang and BlogEd.
• Up-to-date information about syllabus implementation can be found through the icon in your staff portal and at the Department’s intranet.

Professional learning: Leadership
The leadership courses:• support schools in leading improvement, innovation and change• are aligned to both the key accountabilities of the role of the
principal in the Department and to the National Professional Standard for Principals.
• Understanding educational change - provides a clear focus for understanding research and introduces a change model suitable for major educational change such as curriculum implementation.
• Implementing educational change - provides aspiring, newly appointed and current school leaders with a deeper understanding of the successful implementation of educational change.
• Leading educational change with your team - provides processes and frameworks to lead educational change in the participant's stage/faculty/school.

Professional learning: New curriculum
• Curriculum-specific, registered professional learning courses will be
available online through MyPL@edu.
• The first 2 courses assist schools to review curriculum planning,
programming teaching, assessing and reporting practices and how
well they meet the learning needs of students:
o The Learner and the New Curriculum provides a focus on diverse
learning needs in the 21st Century and introduces the new
curriculum (available now).
o Teaching for the New Curriculum will assist schools explore
curriculum planning and programming, teaching and assessment
practices in your school (available late October 2012).

Professional learning: Syllabus-specific
These registered courses will soon be available :
• Your school and the new syllabuses supports the introduction of new curriculum in schools, by examining each syllabus, analysing needs and formulating implementation plans (available late November 2012).
• Programming for the new curriculum provides a guided approach to curriculum planning and the development of teaching programs (available late November 2012).
• These courses are intended to be completed collaboratively such as in faculty or stage groups.

Resources
• Schools are advised not to purchase any new resources until they have had time to explore the available support and the new syllabuses.
• Resources can be found on the Department’s new intranet site. Additional resources will be made available progressively and will include:
o building capacity resources that are professional learning resources developed specifically for the new and challenging aspects of the syllabuses;
o nationally and locally sourced digital curriculum resources.
• The Board of Studies NSW also provides a range of syllabus support materials.

Suggested planning approach
1. Allow time to engage with the available support and understand what changes are required before starting to plan and program the new syllabuses.
2. Review current school practices, considering what is done well and areas for improvement including:• student achievement data and the learning needs of students in your
schools;• curriculum planning, programming teaching, assessment and
reporting practices and how well they meet the learning needs of students.
3. Determine your school’s implementation timeline and plan for action. 2013 has been dedicated to familiarisation with the new syllabuses and planning for implementation. Use the timelines to guide you.
4. In 2014, begin implementation of the NSW syllabuses for the Australian curriculum.
