ATTENDING SCHOOL The School Day

Doors will open at the middle school at 7:05 AM. Students will not be permitted to enter the building before that time. Students who enter the building between 7:05-7:15 AM are to report directly to the following places and remain there until the bell rings: 6th grade - auditorium; 7th and 8th grade – gym; students eating breakfast – cafeteria. Students found in areas other than the cafeteria during this time may be disciplined. At 7:15 AM students are dismissed to their lockers & homeroom. All students must report to homeroom by 7:25 AM.

Dismissal begins for all students at 2:35 PM. 1st Wave students will go directly to their busses exiting through the FRONT ENTRANCE. Walkers & Parent Pick-up will exit through the PARKING LOT DOORS. Walkers must vacate the premises upon dismissal; loitering is not permitted. Students waiting for 2nd wave busses will report to the cafeteria until their bus arrives. Students not riding a bus must leave the building and school property by 2:40 PM unless they are under the direct supervision of a teacher. Students are not permitted to loiter in or around the school after 2:40 PM.

Attendance Policy

Pennsylvania Law and School Board Policy #201 state that you must send your child to school from whenever he or she starts first grade until the age of 17.

According to School Board Policy #204, a student is allowed to be absent from school for the following reasons:

• Illness (if longer than three days, a doctor excuse is required) • Death in the immediate family • Impassable roads • Religious holidays (specified by the PA Department of Education)

When a student is absent, he or she must return to school with a note signed by the parent or guardian. Absence excuse notes are available for downloading and printing at www.gettysburg.k12.pa.us . The note must state the reason for the absence and the dates of absence. The note must be submitted within three (3) school days from the last date of absence. Failure to follow the policies stated above will result in the absence being ruled unexcused. In an effort to encourage attendance, the principal is authorized to require a parent to produce a doctor’s note on the district specified form (Physician’s Documentation of Student Absence) found on the district website or in the middle school main office. A Physician’s Documentation of Student Absence is required for the following reasons:

• Students accumulating 10 or more absences in one school year • Students who have exhibited poor attendance in previous years and continue that pattern into the present

year The Physician’s Documentation note does not by itself guarantee that the absence will be counted as excused. The information furnished by the doctor on the prescribed form will allow the principal or designated attendance officer to determine if the absence is excused according to parameters described in the Administrative Guideline 204. Parents will be notified by mail if doctor excuses are required for all future absences. Absences and the Law (See Board Policy #204 on the district web site)

When a student has been absent for three (3) days during the current school year without a lawful excuse, district staff shall provide notice to the person in parental relation who resides in the same household as the student within ten (10) school days of the student's third unexcused absence. The notice may include the offer of a School Attendance Improvement Conference. The purpose of the School Attendance Improvement Conference is to examine the student's absences and reasons for the absences in an effort to improve attendance with or without additional services.

Page 4: GETTYSBURG AREA MIDDLE SCHOOL...The Gettysburg Area Middle School, recognizing the uniqueness of the middle level student and working in partnership with the family and community,

4

The following individuals shall be invited to the School Attendance Improvement Conference: 1. The student. 2. The student's person in parental relation. 3. Other individuals identified by the person in parental relation who may be a resource. 4. Appropriate school personnel. 5. Recommended service providers. When a student under fifteen (15) years of age is habitually truant, district staff: 1. Shall refer the student to:

a. A school-based or community-based attendance improvement program; or b. The local children and youth agency.

2. May file a citation in the office of the appropriate judge against the person in parental relation who resides in the same household as the student. Educational & Other Planned Absences

You must obtain an Educational Field Trip form from the main office or online at www.gettysburg.k12.pa.us. You need to have the form filled out and returned to that office seven (7) days before the planned absence. Up to ten (10) days per school year may be excused by a principal. Educational trip requests will be denied during PSSA Testing and Keystone Exams. Educational trips shall not be approved for the last ten (10) school days because this is a critical time during the educational process for the teacher and student.

Early Dismissals

If your parents/guardians wish you to be excused before regular dismissal time, they must send a note with you on the day you wish the early dismissal. Notes are available online (see above). You are to take this note before school begins to the main office where you will be given a pass. The pass must be shown to the teacher whose class you are leaving. If you do not have an excuse from your parent/guardian for an early dismissal, your parent/guardian must come in to sign you out. Students will not be called from class until the parent arrives in the office. Students returning from an early dismissal must check in at the main office upon their return, with their early dismissal pass. Students NOT returning to school from an early dismissal are required to bring a note to the main office the next day.

Truancy or Leaving School without Permission

Truancy occurs when a student misses school without the permission of the parent or the district. Students must remain on school property once they have arrived by bus or walking. Violations of this will involve discipline.

Tardiness to Class/Lunch

A little late is too late. If you have been kept in the office or in class by a teacher, ask the teacher or staff member to sign your agenda book before going to your next class or to lunch. If you arrive late to class/lunch without a pass, you may be asked to get a late pass to be admitted to the class/lunch. If you do not arrive to class/lunch at all, it is considered cutting class and appropriate consequences will be implemented.

Tardiness to School

It is understood that transportation or family problems may cause a student to be late to school. A student is allowed to be late to school without a valid excuse (see excused absence reasons above) three times per semester without a penalty. All unexcused tardies after that point will earn the student after-school detention, time spent in ISS, or other disciplinary actions that are determined by the administration. Additionally, time accumulated by tardiness could result in unexcused absences. Please Note: Students are required to have a note signed by their parent/guardian upon arriving to school tardy. Illnesses, Medications, Accidents, & Phys. Ed. Excuses

If a student becomes ill during the school day, he/she is to obtain a pass from his/her teacher and report to the Nurse's Office. If there is a need, parents will be contacted. Students are not to call or text parents to request to be picked up. All medication is to be administered by the school nurse (See Board Policy #210 on the district web site). It must be given to the nurse immediately upon arrival at school, along with a completed medication form signed by the doctor and with complete instructions, i.e.: dosage, times per day, name of medication, physician's name and reason for medication. All medications must be in the original container. Accidents or injuries on school grounds or at school events must be reported immediately to the person in charge and to the school nurse. If you cannot participate in physical education class, you must give an excuse to the nurse in the morning. The excuse should state the reasons and be signed by your doctor.

Bus Transportation

Your school day begins when you step off your property to board the bus. Therefore, you are under the Student Code of Conduct and the rules and expectations of the district while going to and from school. Your driver is

Page 5: GETTYSBURG AREA MIDDLE SCHOOL...The Gettysburg Area Middle School, recognizing the uniqueness of the middle level student and working in partnership with the family and community,

5

responsible for you and has the right to enforce rules as necessary. The bus driver is charged with the responsibility for the orderly and safe transportation of students. Infractions of rules will be reported to the building principal in writing with a copy sent to parents/guardians. Repeated offenses by the student can result in loss of bus privileges for a definite period of time. You are to ride the bus to which you are assigned. Any request to ride a different bus must be in writing by both the parent/guardian of the child changing buses for that day and the parent/guardian of the child who wishes to have a friend visit. Both these requests must be turned in to the main office before school on the day of the request. Once approved, the pass may be picked up by the student making the request before last period. You are allowed to get on/off the bus only at school, home and locations approved by a principal.

ACADEMICS Grading System

Grades in the middle school are printed in percentages. Their equivalency to letter grades is shown below: 100 – 92% A Excellent 91 – 83% B Above Average 82 – 74% C Average 73 – 65% D Below Average Below 65% F Failure Honor Roll

The Middle School Honor Roll is a way to recognize and reward academic achievement. There are two honor levels attainable.

Distinguished – no course marking period grade lower than a 94% Honors - No course grade lower than an 83% and not on Distinguished

Report Cards Report cards are issued to the student approximately 10 days after the end of the marking period. Quarter 4 report cards are mailed home to parents.

Electronic Progress Reports

Grades and assignments due can be checked at any time by going to the district web page at http://www.gettysburg.k12.pa.us and selecting the SW (Skyward) button on the right side of the page, and then selecting Family/Student Access from the pull-down menu under the Login screen. Homework

All homework is expected to be completed and turned in when it is due. Students who are absent are responsible for missed homework. Students may check with their teachers on the day they return for assignments. Students may also go to the district web page at http://www.gettysburg.k12.pa.us and select SW (Skyward) button on the right side of the page, and then select Family/Student Access from the pull-down menu under the Login screen. Completed assignments which are received late may be accepted for partial credit only. Students who do not complete their class work and who have not been absent from school may be assigned to a structured study period or after school detention to complete their work. Studying for tests is also considered homework.

Making-Up Work Missed Due to Absences

Requests for homework assignments should be made to the Counseling Center ext. 5168 by 8:00 AM on the day that the student is absent from school. Assignments will be available at 3:00 PM. You may also access assignments on the website shown in the previous paragraph. It is suggested that homework not be requested unless the student is absent 2 or more consecutive days. If absent less than 2 days, a student should obtain all make-up work from his/her teachers immediately upon return to school. Failure to obtain make-up work is no excuse for not doing the missed work.

Cheating

Cheating occurs whenever a student submits an answer that is not the result of that student’s effort. Examples of cheating are: Copying another student’s homework or allowing someone to copy your homework Taking information from other sources, such as a book or the Internet and not giving credit to where you

found it Trading information with another student verbally, in written format, or by computer that gives the other

student an unfair advantage

Page 6: GETTYSBURG AREA MIDDLE SCHOOL...The Gettysburg Area Middle School, recognizing the uniqueness of the middle level student and working in partnership with the family and community,

6

Signaling another student while taking an exam Submitting work under another student’s name, such as logging into a computer program and taking a test

for another student

If a teacher suspects cheating, the teacher is expected to call a parent and alert that parent to the situation. The teacher may also give zero or reduced credit to all students involved in the cheating.

Textbooks

Each student is assigned numbered books and is responsible for the care of these books. Loss, destruction or damage of these books will result in payment to the school. The office has a list of the replacement cost for each textbook.

Eisenhower Media Center

The EMC, located on the first floor of the middle school, is open from 7:15 AM until 3:00 PM. Students are welcome in the EMC at any time of the day. When entering the EMC, students are expected to sign in and practice library courtesies at all times.

The EMC operates with the help of the Middle School Library Crew. Being on Library Crew is a privilege. This is a group of students who have parent permission and training to help other students in the library during the times that Ms. Mentzer is teaching classes. Students may apply for Library Crew at any time during the school year.

As long as students are in good standing with the EMC (no overdue and/or lost items), they may check out as many items as they wish. Students lose checkout privileges until overdue items are returned or payment is made for lost items. No fines are charged for overdue items, only for lost items. Students should bring their school ID with them to check out library materials. EMC materials include: fiction and nonfiction books, puppets, audio books, Spanish language books, magazines and newspapers, reference materials, short stories and graphic novels. Students use the EMC facilities to search for good books, research assigned and personal interest topics, and to read independently. Students can use GAMS’ on-line library resources 24/7 for research purposes and book discussions. Visit your school Library Media Center. It’s a great place to discover, learn, and enjoy reading!

STUDENT SERVICES

Counseling

Counseling services are available for every student in the school. If you wish to visit a school counselor, you should contact the secretary in the Counseling Center to arrange for an appointment. School counselors are here to help you with scheduling, doing better in classes, understanding feelings, discovering interests and abilities, setting priorities, adjusting to the school, preparing for the future, dealing with problems and friends, and other areas of concern. If you are withdrawing from school for any reason, your parent/guardian should contact the Counseling Center at ext.5168 prior to your last day of attendance.

Student Records (See Board Policy #216)

The district maintains academic, health, behavioral, and other miscellaneous records on each student. Parents and certain legal entities have a right to review records and make amendments to those records. Contact the Counseling Center for questions regarding records of students currently enrolled in that building. Questions regarding all other student records should be addressed at the Administration Building. For a complete description of records compiled and information regarding storage, access, and amendments to those records, see Board Policy #216 on the district web site.

Student Assistance Program

Student Assistance Program (SAP) is available for any student experiencing difficulty in coping with the many pressures of adolescent life. Referrals may be made by students themselves, other students, parents, or staff members. Students can seek assistance about SAP from teachers, counselors, or administrators. Students referred to SAP for specific concerns will receive direction on possible alternatives or solutions to problems. All correspondence and information relating to SAP is strictly confidential.

GAMS PRIDE 5: Positive Attitude, Respect, Integrity, Decision Making, & Empathy Character

Education/Bully Prevention/Positive Behavior Support Program At Gettysburg Area Middle School, the administration, faculty, and staff work hard to provide a positive environment where good character is modeled, expected, recognized and most importantly, where all students feel safe and welcome. Bullying creates an atmosphere of fear and intimidation, detracts from the safe environment necessary for student learning, and may lead to more serious violence. Therefore, GAMS PRIDE 5, the character education program, empowers upstanders, rewards good character, discourages poor decision making, and specifically

Page 7: GETTYSBURG AREA MIDDLE SCHOOL...The Gettysburg Area Middle School, recognizing the uniqueness of the middle level student and working in partnership with the family and community,

7

emphasizes that bullying: physical, verbal, and/or cyber, (electronic, texting, facebook, twitter, Instagram, etc.) will not be tolerated. GAMS PRIDE 5 includes teaching lessons on the importance of having a Positive Attitude, being Respectful, demonstrating Integrity, good Decision Making, and showing Empathy. Students participate in classroom lessons and discussions on these and other topics that contribute to their social learning. Learning to respect each other's differences helps students to grow more tolerant and knowledgeable of our diverse society. Students who contribute to the safety and well being of the middle school earn rewards for their commendable behaviors. Board Policy #249 states the following: Bullying means an intentional electronic, written, verbal or physical act or series of acts directed at another student or students, which occurs in a school setting that is severe, persistent or pervasive and has the effect of doing any of the following:

1. Substantial interference with a student’s education 2. Creation of a threatening environment 3. Substantial disruption of the orderly operation of the school Bullying consists of a pattern of repeated harmful behaviors by a person with more physical or social power toward a less powerful person. This may include a wide variety of behaviors, with deliberate intent to hurt, embarrass, or humiliate the other person. Forms of bullying include:

1. Physical, the most commonly known form; includes hitting, kicking, spitting, pushing and taking personal belongings.

2. Verbal includes taunting, malicious teasing, name-calling, and making threats. 3. Psychological or relational involves spreading rumors, manipulating social relationships and engaging in

social exclusion or intimidation. 4. Cyberbullying is an intentional electronic act of verbal and psychological bullying that occurs through e-

mail, instant messaging, and/or personal profiles and social media sites. Cyberbullying includes, but is not limited to, the following misuses of technology: harassing, teasing, intimidating, threatening, or terrorizing another student, teacher or employee of the district by sending or posting inappropriate or derogatory e-mail messages, instant messages, text messages, digital pictures or images, or web site postings (including blogs). All forms of cyberbullying are unacceptable and, to the extent that such actions are disruptive of the educational process of the district, offenders shall be the subject of appropriate discipline.

BREAKFAST AND LUNCH The school district participates in the National School Breakfast and National School Lunch Programs. Breakfast and lunch are offered to all students each day at reasonable prices. In accordance with these programs, free and reduced meals will be provided to eligible students pending approval of a meal application. All students receive a meal application the first day of school each year. You must re-apply each school year. Only one application per household is required. Please send the application back to school with the child you think is most responsible for turning it in so benefits can start as soon as possible. You may also apply for free or reduced meals using COMPASS at www.compass.state.pa.us. If you apply for free or reduced price school meals through COMPASS, you do not need to submit a paper application. This may be done any time throughout the school year. If you were denied earlier in the year, but now have a decrease in household income, increase in family size, become unemployed or begin receiving Food Stamps or TANF, you may now be eligible. Your free or reduced benefits are carried over to the new school year for the first 30 days. Menus are posted on the Gettysburg Area School District’s website. Menus are also available in the cafeteria or main office. LunchTime point of sale software gives you, as a parent, more control over your child’s eating habits. You may deposit advanced amounts for meals into your child’s account so no money has to be sent with your child daily. This prohibits lost and stolen money, or money spent on items other than meals. It also allows the serving lines to move more quickly. The Food Service Department does not loan cash or allow charges to students for meals. You may also use our online access and payment system to deposit money on your child's account using a credit card or an ACH payment. This online system can also be used to monitor your child's account balance and transactions. To create an account, go to www.gettysburg.k12.pa.us and click on Food Services under the quick links. Weekly emails are sent to parents to provide you with your child’s meal balance. If you are not receiving an email but want to, call the Food Service Office. You may at any time call the Food Service Office at 334-6254 ext. 1204 with any question you may have about the meal programs or the free and reduced meal application process. You may also visit the Food Services website for more information.

STUDENT SUPPLIES/EQUIPMENT

Fees & Obligations

You will have the following fees during your middle school years: • 6th Grade Outdoor Education Camp • 6th, 7th & 8th Grade Unified Arts Fee • 8th Grade Hershey Park Science Trip • Items such as lost, stolen or damaged books, locks, computers, etc. • Computer maintenance fee

Failure to pay fees may result in denial of entry into certain extra-curricular events or retention of final report cards. Obligation notices will be sent via email at the beginning and end of the year and at the end of each marking period. Lockers

Students will be permitted to go to their lockers before school, before lunch, and at the end of the day. Students may stop at their lockers on the way to and from physical education classes. To keep your items secure in your locker, be sure to turn the dial after you close the door. Do not leave your lock on the last number so that you can easily open the door without using the combination; your possessions may not be secure. Remember, if you cannot easily replace an item, it is best to leave that item at home. We cannot be responsible for lost or stolen items from your locker. Locker Searches

The Gettysburg Area School District retains control over student lockers. See Board Policy #226 on the district web site. Lockers are school property loaned to students for use by them for legitimate purposes only. School authorities retain the right to search all lockers without prior warning and without the consent of the student or his/her parents or guardian, and to seize any illegal materials found therein. Such materials may be used as evidence against the student in disciplinary or legal proceedings. NOTE: Food left in lockers overnight can become a health hazard. Lockers will be routinely searched in the evenings for food. Any food found overnight in the lockers will be discarded.

Backpack/Book Bags

Students are expected to leave backpacks in their locker and carry needed supplies to and from class. Cell Phone Use/Electronic Devices

Between the hours of 7:00 AM – 2:35 PM and during socials, students are not permitted to have their cell phones or any other electronic devices turned on. All electronics must be turned off during this time. During the school day, all cell phones/electronic devices must be kept inside the students’ lockers. Phones that are silenced and/or on vibrate are not considered turned off. If the cell phone/electronic device rings, vibrates or is being used by a student during the hours of 7:00 AM -2:35 PM, the student will be written up and the cell phone and/or electronic device will be confiscated and held in the office until a parent/guardian picks it up. Repeat offenders will be required to keep their cell phones/electronic devices in the office during the school day. Exceptions to this policy occur when a teacher determines it is educationally valuable to use cell phones or other electronic devices as part of the lesson (See Board Policy #237 on the district web site).

** Please Note: Parents and/or other family members should not call/text the student during the school day as it is a violation of school policy AND a distraction to the learning environment. There is a phone in the office designated for students to use when they need to contact their families. Students may do so with permission. Additionally, if a family member needs a message to be given to a student, parents/guardians should contact the office.

Lost & Found Items The school attempts to protect all personal properties, but is not responsible for them. Found items should be taken to the office. It is a good idea to clearly mark items with student’s name so they can be returned without delay. This also discourages unauthorized borrowing. A tremendous number of items are accumulated each year as lost. Parents are encouraged to check the lost and found when in the building. The lost and found bin is cleaned out periodically and left over items are donated to charity.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Sporting Events

All spectators and athletes represent our school district and community. Good sportsmanship is essential at all athletic and extra-curricular events. Decisions of the officials should be accepted without question. Any

Page 9: GETTYSBURG AREA MIDDLE SCHOOL...The Gettysburg Area Middle School, recognizing the uniqueness of the middle level student and working in partnership with the family and community,

9

inappropriate conduct will not be tolerated. Anyone not demonstrating proper behavior will be removed from the event immediately and may have their athletic attendance privileges revoked.

Socials

Socials are a privilege and are held during the school year for Gettysburg Area Middle School students only. Students are advised to present their student ID cards when entering the social. Students will not be permitted to leave school property once they have entered the social unless written parental permission has been given and parents have made prior arrangements with a principal. With prior approval from a principal, there may be a 30 minute grace period to enter the social once it has begun. Disciplinary infractions may hinder a student from attending the social. Please see specific information under the Student Code of Conduct section in this handbook. The dress code and cell phone/electronic policy that is enforced during the school day will be enforced at the socials. **The administration reserves the right to prohibit a student from attending a social** Assemblies

Assemblies are a regularly scheduled part of the curriculum and as such, are designed to be educational as well as entertaining experiences. They provide one of the few opportunities in school to learn formal audience behavior. Regardless of the program, courtesy demands that the student body be respectful and appreciative. In live entertainment, unlike radio, television or movies, the performers are very conscious of their audience. Talking, whispering, whistling, stamping of feet and booing are discourteous and will not be tolerated.

Extracurricular Eligibility

Participation in extracurricular clubs and organizations and athletic teams is a privilege, not a right. Thus there are rules of conduct, minimum attendance, and academic guidelines necessary to participate. For athletic programs, additional information is available in the district calendar distributed at the beginning of the school year. Before joining any team, club or activity, students and parents will be asked to sign a participation form that indicates they understand all the guidelines. When a student receives an ISS or OSS as a disciplinary consequence, the student is not permitted to participate in extracurricular activities during the days of serving ISS or OSS. Additionally, the administration reserves the right to determine whether or not the student will continue to participate in the extracurricular activity.

MISCELLANEOUS Change of Address

You should notify the Counseling Center at extension #5168 immediately of any changes in your address, telephone number, e-mail address, or change in employment contact numbers. Courtyard

The courtyard is for your enjoyment and must be cared for accordingly. Students are to walk only on the pavement areas. Students are not permitted to take short cuts through the courtyard and are not permitted to be in the courtyard without the supervision of a teacher. Water Bottles

Students are permitted to carry water bottles with them during the school day. However, bottles must be clear and carry only water. Photo/Media Permission Statement

In an effort to keep the residents of the Gettysburg Area School District up-to-date on school events, media representatives are invited into our schools to photograph special programs or events. Media representatives must register at the main office of each building upon their arrival and are always escorted to a designated area from which they can take photos for publication. District personnel will also take photos of classroom activities and/or individual students from time to time for either release to the local media or use in district media. Identification of students is limited to name, school and grade. Permission to photograph for dispersal to the media, either individually or as part of a group, is assumed, unless you indicate otherwise in writing. Visitors

Parents/guardians are encouraged and welcome anytime at Gettysburg Area Middle School. It is our belief that educational opportunities for students improve when parents join students in the classroom. However, for the protection of the students, all visitors must register at the office and are required to have their driver’s license scanned in order to obtain a visitor’s pass before proceeding to other parts of the building. If you would like to meet and talk with an individual teacher, they are available before school, after school, or during school hours by appointment. Student visitors will only be permitted if they are moving into the area, are from a neighboring area and wishing to evaluate the school prior to enrollment, and must have prior permission of the principal.

Hall Passes & Hallway Expectations

This agenda book is the student’s hall pass and must be carried with him/her at all times. If you need to leave class for any reason, please get the proper initialed permission in the back of this book. You are not permitted in the halls during class periods, at any time, without this agenda book signed by a teacher or staff member. When walking in the halls and in the stairwells, students are expected to stay to the right, at all times.

Items Delivered to Students

Parents, if you are bringing in items, have your child stop at the main office to pick up the item. Students will be called from class to pick up items only at change of class times. In order to assure that resources are adequately utilized and continuity is established in the educational program, school staff will not take personal messages for students.

Emergency Evacuations/Fire Drills

Emergency evacuations/fire drills are held at regular intervals as required by law and are an important safety precaution. Follow instructions given by the teacher in charge of your class. Because of the importance of being able to hear directions during a drill or actual fire, you should not talk or make any noise. A quiet, orderly, evacuation promotes the safety of everyone involved.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS Student Dress

Research concludes that students are able to perform at their highest level, academically and socially, in a safe and secure environment. Studies have also shown that student behavior is greatly affected by attire worn by the student and that appropriately dressed students receive better grades and tend to behave better than those who dress inappropriately. In essence, students tend to behave according to how they are dressed. It is our belief at the middle school, that proper dress is related to healthy school attitudes and work. Pride in one’s work is essential to proper development; proper dress reflects this pride and can contribute to one’s success. Many clothing options that may be popular outside of school are not appropriate in an educational environment. Our dress code is established to provide certain guidelines that allow individuality while maintaining an atmosphere that is safe and free of disruptions. **The administration and staff reserve the right to use their discretion to assess or question anything a student is wearing that may reasonably pose a threat to, be inappropriate, or may be considered a disruption to the educational process.** GAMS DRESS CODE:

• Clothing that endangers health or safety, excessively torn clothing, loose clothing, spiked jewelry (wristbands, earrings, studded bracelets, belts, chains, etc. or dangling accessories that may become caught) is prohibited. No chains are permitted, except those designed as jewelry.

• The piercing of body parts and the insertion of jewelry or other objects, which may pose a danger to the student and/or disrupt the learning process is considered inappropriate. Therefore, earrings and body rings worn in a location other than the ears are strongly discouraged.

• Clothing that is revealing is prohibited. Revealing refers to but is not limited to that which exposes undergarments, cleavage, and/or the midriff area of the student. Low cut tops, front and/or back, are not permitted. Pants must stay up independently and are not permitted to be sagging. Clothing that is too casual, such as pajama pants, scrubs, slippers or house shoes, is prohibited.

• Shirts must have sleeves that cover the shoulders. Tank tops, tube tops, halter tops, muscle shirts and tops with spaghetti straps are not permitted.

• The outer layer of clothing (i.e. shorts, dresses, skirts, etc.) must go to the middle of the thigh or lower to be permitted for school. This includes while participating in physical education class.

• Jeans with holes (above the knee) of any size are not permitted, unless leggings are worn underneath the jeans.

• Clothing with symbols, messages, slogans, and/or pictures displaying or suggesting the use of tobacco, weapons, alcohol, drugs, obscene or inappropriate language, double meaning, sexual innuendos, lewd or illegal behavior, promotes or suggests bullying, teasing, sexual activity or violence, or which is derogatory or offensive to any person/group for reasons of race, religion, disability, age, gender, national origin, or sexual orientation in violation of civil rights laws prohibiting harassment or discrimination is not permitted.

• Shoes: for safety reasons, shoes must have backs. For ex: Slide-in sandals, athletic-type sandals, and flip flops or flip flop-type sandals are not permitted. Shoes worn with heels may not exceed 2” (inches) in height.

• Headwear such as hats of any kind, wave caps, bandanas, sweatshirt hoods, etc. are not permitted. Bandanas are not permitted to be worn anywhere on the student.

Page 11: GETTYSBURG AREA MIDDLE SCHOOL...The Gettysburg Area Middle School, recognizing the uniqueness of the middle level student and working in partnership with the family and community,

11

• Bulky coats, are not allowed to be worn by students during the hours of school operation, unless teacher permission has been given.

Students who do not abide with the provisions of the dress code can be expected to be counseled by teachers, counselors, or administrators and appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken. Students will not be permitted to attend class until acceptable adjustments are made to their appearance. Flagrant or repeated violations of the dress code will result in the assignment of more serious discipline. Students found wearing inappropriate attire will have the following discipline:

1st Offense: Exchange item for appropriate school clothes or if no appropriate clothing is available, the student must call home for a parent to bring appropriate change of clothes. If this isn’t possible, administrative decision will follow. Specific disciplinary measures will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

2nd Offense: Same as 1st Offense plus an office discipline referral

3rd Offense: Same as 2nd Offense plus treated as defiance or insubordination resulting in whatever consequences are deemed necessary by the administration. Physical Education Dress Code

All students are required to wear clothes that are appropriate for physical activity. Seventh and eighth grade students must wear a T-shirt, gym shorts or pants, socks and sneakers. Sixth grade students should wear a comfortable shirt, pants or shorts that expand (no zippered pants) and contain no sharp metal (rivets, studs, etc.), and sneakers with socks. NOTE: The dress code for the school day is enforced during physical education. Shorts must go to the middle of the thigh to be appropriate for Physical Education Class.

To insure good personal hygiene, students are expected to take a shower after physical exercise. Please send the student with proper clothing and a towel and deodorant. Stick deodorants are acceptable. For other reasons, spray deodorants are not permitted.

Lunch Behavior

• Students may be assigned by team to certain areas/tables within the cafeteria. Within the team area, students are permitted to select their own seat daily. Students who are consistently up and out of their seat without permission will be assigned a special table location.

• All students are expected to use good table manners, be considerate of each other, and to follow the cafeteria expectations posted in the cafeteria.

• Students must raise their hands and get permission to get out of their seats for any reason. • Students may go to their lockers before or after lunch, depending on their team assignment. Students

are not permitted in the locker area during lunch. Students are to be in the cafeteria on time. • Cafeteria supervisors will dismiss students to proceed to the lunch lines. Students are asked to form

and keep an orderly single file line. • Students are to return lunch trays and silverware to the proper area, clean up all trash and leave the

tables and the floor neat and clean. • Students may use only the restrooms closest to the cafeteria and do so after they receive permission

from a cafeteria supervisor, sign out, and take the appropriate pass. • No open food or drink is to be taken from the cafeteria at any time. • Fresh Air: Weather permitting, students will be allowed to go outside after they are finished eating. If a

cafeteria supervisor takes the students outside, students may do so after cleaning their eating area and seeking permission by raising his/her hand. Permission must be given by a cafeteria supervisor. Students may come back inside before lunch is over; however, once a student returns to the cafeteria, he/she must remain there until lunch is over.

• Students may leave the lunchroom to go to another classroom only with previous written permission from another teacher. The cafeteria-supervising teacher must also sign this permission slip and/or student’s agenda book.

• Students who do not follow the cafeteria expectations will be given a new assigned seat, be removed from the lunch area, and/or disciplined.

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT Response to Student Misconduct

This section is intended to serve as the guideline for discipline in the secondary schools (See Board Policy #218 on the district web site). Students in the Gettysburg Area School District have rights and responsibilities, just as private citizens have in a democratic society (See Board Policy #235 on the district web site). Students share this responsibility with their parents, the school administration, faculty and other school staff to create a climate that is conducive to wholesome learning and living. Effective discipline and an orderly learning environment result from the mutual understanding of the rights and responsibilities of everyone working and learning in school. Students will be disciplined and consequences will be implemented if they infringe upon the rights of others to learn, fail to follow the Student Code of Conduct, or threaten to disrupt the safe, orderly learning environment. The opportunity for students to attend and participate in special events outside the regular classroom setting is a privilege. In order to attend/participate, students must be in good behavior standing. Students are not permitted to attend if one or more of the following conditions apply: - If a student has accumulated 8 office discipline referrals for the current school year - If a student has 2 office discipline referrals within 30 days of the event or activity - If a student has 1 or more office discipline referral(s) that resulted in an ISS/OSS within 30 days of the event or activity **The administration reserves the right to use discretion in any situation**

13

The guidelines for school discipline include a three level discipline structure with examples and options in each as follow: LEVEL I Misbehavior that impedes orderly classroom procedures, disrupts the learning, or interferes with the orderly operation of the school will not be tolerated. Teachers and administrators will use the following system when determining a response to student misconduct. The classroom teacher is the first level of authority in regards to discipline in the Gettysburg Area Middle School. The classroom teacher handles discipline problems at this level. Initial contact is made with the parents by the referring teacher about the incident; follow up contact may occur by an administrator. The classroom teacher is expected to use one or more optional disciplinary responses before a student is referred to the office. In cases of repetitive misbehavior, the staff members shall confer with the principal, assistant principal, school counselor, and/or parents(s). Accurate records must be maintained of misbehavior and actions taken.

INFRACTIONS POSSIBLE DISCIPLINARY RESPONSES

Some examples, but not limited to: Violation of school procedures (classroom, bus,

LEVEL III Acts which result, or may result, in violence to another's person or property or which pose a direct threat to the safety or well-being of others in the school will not be tolerated. These acts are more serious because their consequences may have a lasting effect on the individual or may pose a threat to the health and safety of others in the school. In some cases, law enforcement officials may be contacted or notified by an administrator. Under this level, once notification has been made to an administrator, the administrator investigates further and confers with staff members and/or witnesses on the circumstances and immediate needs. Contact is made with the parents about the misbehavior and consequences. The student(s) will make restitution for any loss or damage resulting from the misconduct. Accurate records will be maintained of the misbehavior, corrective actions taken and parent communications. The Board may, after a proper hearing, suspend a student for such time as it deems necessary or may permanently expel a student. Gang Behavior Gang behavior and student affiliation or admiration of gangs and gang atmosphere is a school concern. A gang is defined as: three (3) or more individuals with a common interest, bond, or activity whose purpose includes the commission of illegal acts, and reference to themselves by a group name or designation. The wearing of gang clothing, logos, or colors in a manner designed to promote a gang culture is prohibited. Gettysburg Area Middle School will discipline all individuals engaged in gang promotion. Detentions

Detentions may be assigned by individual teachers (after-school or lunch time) or by the administration. After school detentions vary in time and can be held from as early as 2:35 PM to as late as 3:45 PM. Students must arrive on time, work the entire time, and leave only when dismissed by the person in charge. You must make arrangements for transportation home unless the school is able to provide bussing. Twenty-four (24) hours notice will be given for after-school detentions unless waived by the student/parent. Teacher assigned detentions are served with the teacher in his/her classroom or in a reserved area with administration preapproval.

Suspension: Suspension exists when a student is temporarily removed from class or school but is still expected to complete work being assigned in class.

o ISS - Students who are suspended in-school are not allowed to participate in any school function for that day or longer depending on the violation. Extra time in ISS may be assigned for failure to complete assignments or misbehavior. Community service hours and/or working with the custodial staff may be included as part of a student’s day while serving ISS.

o OSS - Students who are suspended out-of-school are still expected to complete assignments, however, they are not allowed on school district property to get those assignments. For that reason, students suspended out-of-school are expected to take home their books and their parents are expected to check regularly with the Counseling Center for assignments. Students on out-of-school suspension are not allowed on school property during the suspension and they are also not allowed to participate in school activities until the suspension is completed. A meeting with parents, student, and administration may be requested upon the student’s return to school.

Use of Video Surveillance Cameras (Board Policy #816) The Gettysburg Area School District may utilize information gathered from video surveillance and use as evidence in disciplinary action and/or criminal prosecution. This includes on district transportation, in district buildings, and on school grounds. (See Board Policy #816 on the district web site)

Video and Audio Surveillance on School Transportation (Board Policy #816.2) The Gettysburg Area School District may utilize information gathered from audio and/or video surveillance on district transportation and use as evidence in disciplinary action and/or criminal prosecution. (See Board Policy #816.2 on the district web site)

Tobacco Use or Possession (Board Policy #222) The possession or use of tobacco in any form is prohibited in the school building, grounds and vehicles or while participating in school-sponsored functions (See Board Policy #222 on the district web site). The school board defines tobacco as use and/or possession of a lighted, unlighted cigarette, cigar, pipe; other smoking product, smokeless tobacco in any form and any device giving the appearance of a tobacco product, such as electronic or vapor cigarettes. Students in violation of this policy will be subject to disciplinary action and prosecution and subsequent fines through the local magistrate. Naloxone (Board Policy #852) The Gettysburg Area School District recognizes that opioid overdose is a major public health problem. Overdose involves students of all ages, ethnicities, and demographic and economic characteristics, and involves both illicit opioids such as heroin and, increasingly, prescription opioid analgesics such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, fentanyl, and methadone. Therefore the district will stock and maintain naloxone, a drug to reverse the effects of an opioid related overdose, at both the high school and middle school. To encourage overdose reporting, students who report possible overdoses in the school setting and qualify for immunity from criminal prosecution will not be subject to school discipline procedures. Students who are under the influence of a controlled substance are subject to the disciplinary action and the provisions of Policy 227.

Page 17: GETTYSBURG AREA MIDDLE SCHOOL...The Gettysburg Area Middle School, recognizing the uniqueness of the middle level student and working in partnership with the family and community,

17

Weapons (Board Policy #218A) The Gettysburg Area School District prohibits the possession of weapons on school grounds (See Board Policy #218A on the district web site). For this purpose, a weapon includes, but is not limited to, any knife, cutting instrument, cutting tool, nunchaku, firearm, shotgun, rifle, replica of a weapon, and/or any other tool, instrument or implement capable of inflicting serious bodily injury. Possession or use of a weapon on school grounds is a serious offense and can lead to permanent expulsion from school. A student is in possession of a weapon when the weapon is found on the person of the student, in the student’s locker, under the student’s control while on school property, on property being used by the school, at any school function or activity, at any school event held away from the school, or while the student is coming to or from school.

Harassment (Board Policy #148)

It is the policy of this school district that all students should enjoy a learning environment free from all forms of discrimination, including sexual harassment. Board policy (See Board Policy #148 on the district web site) prohibits any student from harassing another student through conduct or communications of a sexual nature including requests for sexual favors or inappropriate verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. Students experiencing harassment should report such immediately to their teacher, counselor or school administrator with the understanding that such a complaint will not affect future grades or assignments. A substantiated charge against a student shall subject that student to disciplinary action which may include suspension or expulsion.

Terroristic Threats or Acts (Board Policy #218.2)

The Gettysburg Area School District has adopted policy citing the need for an immediate and effective response to a situation involving a terrorist threat or act (See Board Policy #218.2 on the district web site). It is a violation of this policy to threaten to commit violence, to cause evacuation of a building, or to cause serious public inconvenience in reckless disregard of the risk of causing such terror or inconvenience. A terrorist act shall mean an offense against property or involving danger to another person. If a student is in violation of this policy, he or she may be suspended immediately and reported to law enforcement officials, and shall be subject to random searches upon returning to school. The student may also be recommended to the school board for expulsion.

Drug & Alcohol (Board Policy #227)

Alcohol or controlled substances (drugs) of any kind are not permitted in the school, on school grounds, or at school activities. The school board defines a controlled substance as:

1. Controlled substances prohibited by federal and state law 2. Alcoholic beverages 3. Anabolic steroids 4. Look-alike drugs 5. Prescription or patent drug and non-prescription (over-the-counter) medications, except those for which

7. Drug paraphernalia 8. Substances that when ingested cause a physiological effect that is similar to the effect of a controlled

substance as defined by state or federal law, such as but not limited to herbal incense or other products containing synthetic cannadinoids

A student who is under the influence of alcohol, drugs or uses, dispenses, sells or aids in the procurement of drugs, alcohol or any restricted substance or over-the-counter drug shall be subjected to discipline which may include suspension and/or expulsion (See Board Policy #227 on the district web site). Students found in violation of this policy will be reported to local civil authorities in addition to consequences outlined in the policy. Trespassing

Students may not be in any school building other than their own before, during, or after school hours unless they have specific permission. Also, students may not be in any school building or on school property if they have been suspended or expelled from school, or if a principal or assistant principal has told them to leave school property. Students are never allowed to be on any school building roof for any reason. This situation is always a safety hazard and will be considered a trespassing violation and possibly vandalism.

GETTYSBURG AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT COMPUTER NETWORK USER AGREEMENT

Please read this document carefully before signing it.

Access to the Gettysburg Area School District computer network is available to all students and staff. Connection to the network is provided directly through workstations in all District buildings or with personal devices. All personal devices must connect to our wireless network and may not use cellular 3G or 4G connections. Resources include a large number of general and specialized software programs as well as access to the Internet. Students are provided with a maximum of 500 MB of storage space for their electronic classwork.

It is possible that your child may find material on the Internet that you would consider objectionable. The District Acceptable Use Policy restricts access to material that is inappropriate in the school environment, and we have installed a filtering system to limit access to inappropriate material. However, the software is not entirely effective in blocking access because the Internet content is constantly changing.

Although use of the Internet will be supervised by staff, we cannot guarantee that your child will not gain access to inappropriate material. There may be additional kinds of material on the Internet that are not in accord with your family values. We would like to encourage you to use this as an opportunity to have a discussion with your child about your family values and your expectation about how these values should guide your child’s activities while on the Internet.

E-mail is limited to only allow student messages to be sent to District accounts. Use of this service is subject to the same monitoring and discipline used for all technology services at Gettysburg Area School District.
