pH Reference Buffers GFS Chemicals’ pH Buffers aremanufactured from the finesthigh-purity water and reagentgrade chemicals. They arestandardized at 25°C againstNIST reference materials to atolerance of 0.01 on Buffers4.00, 7.00, and 10.00 and to atolerance of 0.02 on all otherbuffer ranges. Our buffers are

For acid-base: diphenylguani-dine, constant boiling perchlo-ric acid, potassium acidphthalate, potassium bi-iodate, sulfamic acid, and tris-hydroxymethyl-aminomethane.

For redox titrimetry the fol-lowing are listed as primarystandards: ceric ammoniumnitrate, ferrous ethylenedi-ammonium sulfate, electrolyt-ic iron, potassium bi-iodate,potassium dichromate, andsodium oxalate.

For complexation titrimetry(EDTA): calcium carbonate,disodium dihydrogen ethyl-enediaminetetraacetate dihy-drate, and magnesium iodatetetrahydrate.

Other specially prepared pri-mary standards include sodi-um chloride for argentimetrictitrations; and cobalt sulfatefor volumetric and colorimet-ric analyses.

Complexometric Titration ReagentsA spectacular advance in ana-lytical chemistry was theintroduction of ethylenedi-aminetetraacetate as a stan-dard solution in titrations

involving the formation ofcomplex ions.

Of several substances whichcan be used as standard solu-tions in such analyses, sodi-um ethylenediamine-tetraacetate (EDTA) is one ofthe most satisfactory in that itforms highly stable complexions with calcium, magnesiumand numerous other metals. Asolution of disodium dihydro-gen ethylenediaminetetra-acetate (pH 5.5) is usuallyused as the standard solution.

The most common of suchtitrations is the determinationof calcium and magnesium, asin analysis of waters for hard-ness, or of limestone. Theend-point may be detected invarious ways, the most com-mon utilizing the dyestuffEriochrome Black T. Thisdyestuff has the unique prop-erty of itself forming a com-plex ion with magnesium. Ontitration, the EDTA first unites

with the calcium andmagnesium ions insolution and thenpulls the magnesiumaway from thedyestuff-magnesiumcomplex resulting in acolor change from redto blue. The titrationis carried out at a pHof 10 and yields thesum of the calciumand the magnesiumpresent.

Aqueous solutions ofEriochrome Black Tdo not keep andanother indicator, Calmagite,was introduced for the EDTAtitration of calcium plus mag-nesium. The color change ofCalmagite at the end-point isalso from red to blue but thecolors are clearer and theend-point sharper. Aqueoussolutions of this indicator arestable indefinitely. Carried outunder slightly different condi-tions, pH 12, and with theindicator Calcein, calciumalone may be determined inthe presence of even largeamounts of magnesium. Thisprocedure may be applied tothe determination of calciumin water and in limestone.Calcein modified by the addi-

tion of certain blue dyes, thy-molphthalein or bromthymolblue, gives a somewhat moresatisfying color change at theend-point.

The end-point with Calceinmay be detected also by thedisappearance of the fluores-cence under ultraviolet illumi-nation of the calcium salt.Calcein is prepared by theaction of formaldehyde andiminodiacetic acid on fluores-cein. It is typical of a class ofindicators known at “metalflu-orochromic” indicators.

Another indicator of this classis Calcein Blue(ß-methyl-umbelliferonemeth-ylene- iminodiacetic acid)which is useful in the titrationof copper, cobalt and other

metals with EDTA.

Three primary stan-dard materials areavailable for titrimet-ric work with EDTA.Ordinary reagentgrade calcium carbon-ate contains sufficientmagnesium to make itunacceptable as a pri-mary standard but aspecial, low-magne-sium grade is avail-able, Item# 337. Aboutthe only good primary standardmagnesium

compound is magnesiumiodate tetrahydrate, describedin 1962 by Lindstrom andStevens; this material is avail-able as Item# 348. DisodiumDihydrogen Ethylenediamine-tetraacetate Dihydrate, thereagent used to prepare EDTAsolutions, is itself a good pri-mary standard when properlyprepared, item #365.

Hundreds of GFS prod-ucts fit this product profile,and two groups deserve spe-cial mention: ultrapure (99.99to 99.9999%) materials andstandard solutions, (for exam-ples, see pp. 96-97) andQuaternary Ammonium saltsand solutions (QUATS).

GFS has a long history withQUATS; our production oftetraalkylammonium perchlo-rates reflects the company’sdominant market position inperchloric acid and inorganicperchlorate salts. The GFSQUAT line now includesElectrometric and AnalyticalReagent Grade (EARG) prod-ucts.

The EARG line of high purityQUATS have characteristicproperties that are of particu-lar interest to chemists andtechnicians dealing with

processes and protocols thathave stringent purity require-ments; this includes suitabili-ty for use as polarographicelectrolytes and/or HPLCapplications. Both methanolicand aqueous hydroxide solu-tions feature: • very high alkalinity• very low chloride• virtual freedom from alkali

metal impurities• low ash

The chemical literaturereflects a broad and ongoinginterest in QUATS, includingthe perchlorate salts. Electro-analytical studies of tetraethylammonium perchlo-rate solutions have elucidatedthe nature of cation adsorp-tion at mercury electrodes.1A wide range of tetrabutyl-ammonium perchlorate solu-tions have been examined forconductometric and dielectricbehavior.2 Electronic conduc-tion has also been used tostudy the behavior of thenitrobenzene anion radical inthe presence of tetrabutylam-monium perchlorate in solidnitrobenzene.3
