How does a highly exclusive private museum - The Guggenheim, respond to the Nordic sensibility of openness, accessibility and social inclusiveness?
How does the private museum become public without losing its institutional integrity?
How does an international institutional icon root itself within cultural and local context of Finland?
A tenuous weaving and stitching of the public realm and the museum building becomes our point of intervention. The form, functioning and programming of the museum has been derived by manipulating the sectional relationship
into, under, over and around the exclusive exhibit spaces.
We combine the culturally rooted fabric design – Hardanger embroidery and traditional tent & ship building techniques of the Nordic region. This combination is used to develop a system that organizes the public-private program and the unique display envelope of the museum.
A new museum typology is invented where the public & private entities coexist.

This technique is used to formulate a system to organize the public and

A set of organic funnel structures, tied together at roof level form the primary structural system of the building. A series of cuboid spaces are attached, hung and cantilevered from this structure, making the ground plane an open public plaza.

The primary structural system of the building doubles up its function as a heating and ventilating mechanism. Utilizing the principles of Nordic wooden post and fabric tents of the Sami people- Lavvu and Goahti - interior heat gain is used to thermally control the internal environment. The funnel shape
radiation. Further the double layer of the glass and fabric panels create a natural insulation. This double layer can also be utilized to ventilate the building.
A layered system of retractable fabric panels has been used throughout the museum spaces. This system allows a multiplicity of display backdrops and space enclosure, internally. Further the textile patterns can create a unique
Nordic identity for the museum externally. The retractable panel system uses the ribbed funnel structure as its armature.
