Tom Martin’sHunting and Fishing Report

We are now almost halfway through Lent. I trust you have been using this time to prepare yourself for Easter Sun-day. It should be a time for us to reflect on the sacrifice that Christ made on our behalf. As I have mentioned before, I am giving up sweets and desserts during Lent. During this time, there have been times when I have been tempted to give

in and have something sweet. The first temptation came on the Thursday after Ash Wednesday. We were visiting our daughter and her family. We had finished our meal and the subject of dessert came up. I told my daughter I would pass on the dessert. My six year- old granddaugh-ter was quick to pick up on my refusal. She was curious as to why I didn’t want dessert. Her mom told her I was making a sacrifice. “Why would you do that?”, she asked. Before I could explain about Lent and sacrifices, her mom asked her if she knew of someone else who made a sac-rifice. Her reply was quick. “Jesus”, she said. Even a six-year-old knows about the sacrifice of Jesus, and she was fine with me making a sacrifice. We talked about what she might give up and it was an interesting conversation. I have discovered that when people find out that you are making a sacrifice during Lent, it becomes a topic of conversation. I was at O’Charley’s on a Wednesday, which is “Free Pie Day” there, when a waitress asked me what kind of pie I wanted. I told her I didn’t want any. “Would you like to carry it home?” “No.” “Don’t you like our pie?” “I love your pie, but I am giving up desserts for Lent.” She was Catholic and understood what I was doing, and she shared what she was giving up. One of my friends responded that he wasn’t observing Lent and wanted my pie and his pie. He got both. Speaking of friends and Lent, I had a friend who knew that one year I had given up soft drinks during Lent. He had the waitress bring me a soft drink. I guess my friend was testing my resolve. I resisted, but I made him pay for it since he had ordered it. With friends like that who needs enemies. I sometimes feel like the cartoon character Pogo, “I have met the enemy, and he is us.” I like to say, “I have met the enemy, and he is me.” More times than not it is my own conscience that gets in the way. The other day I was pondering if having a milk shake with a burger was dessert. After all, technically, a milkshake is a drink not a dessert. But then I thought it has ice cream and choco-late, that sure sounds like dessert. I passed on the shake and had a diet coke which I haven’t given up this year. When temptations arise and we give in, it is easy to justify our actions. We find the loopholes in life so that we can do what we want to do. In our Pastor’s Class, the question was asked, “Was Jesus ever tempted?” One of the children was quick to respond, “No, never.” I pointed out that Jesus indeed was tempted, but he did not give in to that temptation. That is what we are called to do. Whether it is Lent or any other time, we will be tempted to forsake our values and faith. What we hope is that we will have the strength to resist those temptations.

Dear Friends, Thank you so very much for the meal delivered to us after my recent surgery. The chili, rolls and pie were wonderful along with the thoughtfulness, and the prayers were precious, Mrs. Donna Chapman’s visit was certainly a bright spot. Thank you again. Sincerely, Julie Partain

Dear First Christian Church Family, I can never thank you enough for the check from Week of Compassion. We could never have moved without your help. I am sending Nita some pictures of the devastation of our house and neighborhood that she can share with you. Bless you for taking us under your wings. Thank you for your kindness and compassion. Love and prayers, Becky Mays
