Title Hypocoercivity in reaction-kinetic modelsSupervisor Prof. Christian SchmeiserMotivation The classical models for reaction networks coupled with spatial transport are of
reaction-diffusion type. The introduction of entropy/entropy-dissipation methodsmotivated by kinetic theory to the field of reaction-diffusion systems has led to aremarkable development in this field. This includes both the existence theory andthe analysis of the long-time behavior. It seems natural to try the extension of someof these results to models with kinetic transport instead of diffusion. This subjectoffers a large variety of challenges.
Description Kinetic models for first order chemical reaction networks. We consider linearsystems of kinetic equations for gas mixtures with scattering by an immobile, constanttemperature backgrond medium and first order reactions. This is a kinetic version ofthe reaction-diffusion systems considered in Fellner, Prager, Tang (2016), where thereaction network has been assumed to permit so called complex balance equilibriabased on the assumption of a weakly reversible reaction network, and exponentialdecay to equilibrium has been shown by entropy/entropy dissipation. We proposeto apply the approach of Dolbeault, Mouhot, Schmeiser (2015) to this situation.Ideas from Arnold, Erb (2016) will be extended with the goal to improve the decayrates. Possible extensions are to systems, where some of the chemical species areimmobile. This corresponds to the results for degenerate diffusion in Fellner, Prager,Tang (2016).
Collaboration with G. Schimperna - PaviaTitle Navier-Stokes–Allen-Cahn model with inertial terms
People Giulio Schimperna, Favre GianlucaDescription We consider a mathematical model describing the flow of two-phase fluids in a
bounded container Ω under the assumption that the phase transition process isinfluenced by inertial effects. The model couples a variant of the Navier-Stokessystem for the velocity u with an Allen-Cahn-type equation for the order parameterϕ relaxed in time through a second order term ϕtt. The main difficulty of themodel stands in the coupling terms related to transport effects in the phase relation.Actually, in order to obtain a mathematically tractable problem, we need to includea viscous relaxation term −∆ϕt in the phase equation. Our mathematical resultsare devoted to proving existence of weak solutions in 3D and well-posedness andregularity in 2D. A characterization of the long-time behaviour of solution trajectoriesis also provided.
