LBSD GIFTED PROGRAM SURVEY RESULTS

•Program is beneficial: 100% parents, 100% teachers, 99% students•Program is challenging and appropriate to the students’ levels of ability: 98%

parents, 100% teachers, and 98% students •100% parents reported that their child shares what he/she does in the gifted

program with them, while 89% of the teachers reported that students shared

what they did in Discovery with them or the class. •Gifted program provides a curriculum that is qualitatively different from the

regular academic program: 100% parents, 100% teachers, and 98% students •When asked if they identify the process skills they are using and developing

• To provide additional options for high ability learners to include curriculum compacting, grade acceleration, and flexible grouping arrangements in all educational settings, while also extending the GEP beyond the mandated grades of 2-6 (Criterion I.3.4; III 1.3; III.4.4).

• In order to continue growing in the LBSD gifted program, more in-depth internships in career exploration at the 6th grade level through job shadowing will be offered during the 2013-14 school year (Criterion I.5.4); STEM immersion through the use of engineering projects (Discovery Imagineers); and the continued inclusion of technology being used in the gifted classroom through Skype and use of on-line projects.

LBSD GIFTED PROGRAM GOALS 2013-2014

• To provide support services to regular classroom teachers regarding the needs of gifted and high ability learners, the LBSD gifted coordinator will offer help and encouragement with flexible grouping arrangements for gifted and high ability learners in all settings, starting with STEM projects during the 2013-2014 school year. (Criterion III.4.4); continue publicizing the materials available for check out in the “Sharing/Lending Library” to all regular classroom teachers and school personnel while continuing to add to the holdings regarding the nature of meeting the needs of the gifted student in the regular classroom (Criterion II.3.4.4 and VI.1.3.4); keeping pertinent information available on-line (Gifted Website) to all staff regarding many topics on gifted students (Criterion III.3.2.4, III.5.3, V.5.3, VI.1.1.4, VII.1.1.3), invite staff from all elementary schools to LBSD Gifted Professional Learning Community sessions throughout the school year to share materials and strategies concerning high ability learners (Criterion VI.1.1.3).

• In order to more effectively evaluate the LBSD gifted program, a recognized expert/s in the field of gifted education will provide a periodic review to evaluate the effectiveness of the district’s gifted program (Criterion III.3.1.4); advertising and improving the on-line survey tool will be solicited during the 2013-14 school year. (Criterion IV.2.1.4)

• To more effectively address the social-emotional needs of the gifted, Long Beach School District counselors will attend the MAGC preconference session for counselors for additional training in providing for the needs of gifted students which would provide counselors with updated information and strategies and for training in providing appropriate career counseling for gifted students at all levels, and for additional training in providing appropriate counseling services for at-risk gifted students at all levels. (Criterion V.1.3, V.2.3, V.3.3); continuing a schedule of monthly services for gifted students by counselors to address specific needs of gifted students (Criterion V.1.4); optimizing mentorship opportunities from local community business, industry, and education members to provide career opportunities for students (V.2.4); and plans at each school site to provide a continuum of specialized counseling services for gifted at-risk students. (Criterion V.3.4)

LBSD GIFTED PROGRAM GOALS 2013-2014

• To more effectively provide support for the LBSD gifted program parents, we will continue to add to the holdings of the Sharing/Lending Library in providing a section for parental check-out of books regarding the characteristics and social emotional needs of the gifted.(Criterion VII.1.4.3); teachers of the gifted will continue offering a beginning and end of the year meeting with all parents of gifted students, updating them on progress and forming a closer parent-teacher relationship; teachers of the gifted will also keep a Contact Log with a monthly minimum requirement of e-mail, parent communication log, parent-teacher meeting, or phone call contact to give parents a continuum of information regarding their child’s progress in the gifted program.
