Gifted Resources News

Because people tend to choose gifts for others that they would like to receive themselves, this month I am giving you all a Tuit – not just a plain Tuit, but a Round Tuit!

My husband’s retirement and our move to Rosebud should have meant that there would be so much more time to do all the things I needed to do, plus all the things I would like to do, plus all the things that I intended to do ‘someday’. However my rate of work has decreased and the activities tend to expand to fill all available time. The current Want To Do list includes blog posts, writing an e-book, converting the church school programs and film discussion notes to e-books or similar, updating website, finishing craft projects, quilting, painting, more walks on beach and… and… So I find I am still saying “I will do that when I get A Round Tuit” So now that I have dropped a hint about the gift I would like to receive, maybe someone will give me A Round Tuit and just maybe they will also give me an Energy Level Booster

MONASH FACT OR FICTION – Tuesday 14 August 2012

As part of Science Week Monash Science Centre is running Fact or Fiction an 80 minute show where the audience watch clips of classic sci-fi hits before individually voting, with hand held devices, on whether the technology featured is actual science fact or pure science fiction. Once the audience voting has been locked in, scientists from the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation will critique the science featured in the film and provide the answer. Fact or Fiction has been designed to be highly entertaining and educational and attract kids that aren’t necessarily interested in science by providing them with a big dose of pop-culture. Science areas that are explored include Teleporting, Time Travel, Invisibility, Immortality, Light Sabres, Intelligent Metals, Terraforming Climates and Telekinesis. Age suitability is 8 years and above. In its only Melbourne shows for 2012, three sessions of Fact or Fiction will be held on Tuesday 14 August at Monash Biomedical Imaging Facility Auditorium, Monash University. 10.00am and 1.00pm – Shows available to primary and high schools 7.00pm – Evening performance available to the general public Admission to Fact or Fiction by gold coin donation and bookings are essential. Please call 03 9905 1370 or email [email protected]. http://www.home-ed.vic.edu.au/2012/07/03/fact-or-fiction-at-monash-science-centre/

GLOBAL EDUCATION CONFERENCES Three great world-wide virtual conferences coming up in the next few months. Each is free to attend, and each has an emphasis on encouraging participation and presentations--even if you've never done so before. They are part of my Web 2.0 Labs projects, designed to provide spaces for

great conversations around education. Everyone is encouraged to participate--you can present, attend, and/or volunteer to help!

Learning 2.0 (http://www.learning20.com)

August 20 - 24, 2012 Just announced! This conference has a short lead time (right around the corner!), but this is so that it can be part of Connected Educator Month, a month-long set of terrific activities to help educators connect with each other.

Learning 2.0 is a unique chance to participate in a global conversation on rethinking teaching and learning in the age of the Internet. Subject strands include changes in the classroom (social media, 1:1 computing, "flipped classrooms," digital literacy, maker spaces, gaming, open educational resources, digital textbooks), in student learning (individualized learning, student-directed learning, "hacking" education, personal success plans, ePortfolios, and building a digital presence), in teacher personal and professional growth (lead learning, personal learning

networks, peer / open / self-directed PD), in schools (virtual and online schooling, mobile learning, blended learning, MOOCs, immersive environments, learning spaces, entrepreneurship, school leadership, big data, assessment models), and in pedagogy (from teaching to learning, social learning, social / educational networking, passion-based learning, learning how to learn, brain-based learning). A full strand list is available HERE.

The conference will also include an all-day virtual unconference (SocialEdCon online!) as well as a special educational start-up "pitchfire" event. The conference general information page is HERE and call for presentation proposals and instructions for Learning 2.0 can be found HERE.

Library 2.012 (http://www.library2012.com) October 3 - 5, 2012 In its second year, the Library 2.012 conference is a unique chance to participate in a global conversation on the current and future state of libraries. Held over the course of two days (three

Page 10: Gifted Resources · wcgtc international week of giftedness august 2012 website gerric parents workshop 11-12 august 2012 website australian gifted support centre camp morisett nsw

actual calendar days when including all time zones), there will likely be over 150 presentations.

Subject strands include physical and virtual learning spaces, evolving professional roles in today's world, organizing and creating information, changing delivery methods, user-centered access, and mobile and geo-social information environments. A full strand list is available HERE. Huge thank

to the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at San José State University, the founding

conference sponsor! The conference general information page is HERE and call for presentation proposals and instructions for Library 2.012 can be found HERE.

The Global Education Conference (http://www.globaleducationconference.com)

November 12 - 16, 2012 Celebrating it's third year, and co-chaired by the amazing Lucy Gray, this five-day, 24 hour per day incredible event brings together educators and students from around the world to discuss globally-connected education, projects, and activities. It is designed to significantly increase opportunities for building education-related connections around the globe while supporting cultural awareness and recognition of diversity. Last year’s conference featured 340 general sessions and

18 keynote addresses from all over the world with over 10,000 participant logins. This year the conference is being run in conjunction with the iEARN worldwide international conference and we're anticipating some 20 - 30,000 attendees. The conference general information page is HERE and call for presentation proposals and instructions for Learning 2.0 can be found HERE.

Organizations interested in becoming sponsors of the conferences listed above, or of any of the Web 2.0 Labs projects, should email me at [email protected] directly. See you online!

ECHA Conference Symposium: Social Media and Gifted Education

Blog post July 19, 2012 by giftedphoenix

The 13th International Conference of the European Council for High Ability (ECHA) is taking place

from September 12-15 2012 in Munster, Germany.

One of the sessions is a Symposium on Social Media and Gifted

Education. It is scheduled for Thursday 13 September from 14.15 to 15.45 local time, which

corresponds to these times elsewhere in the world.

The overarching Symposium Abstract says:

‘We will explore:

the extent to which social media have been applied to gifted education;

the benefits and the risks that social media can bring, whether for learners, parents, educators

or policy-makers; and

how this field is likely to develop over the next few years.

We will discuss what further collaborative action gifted educators in Europe and beyond might take

to capitalise on the potential for social media to build and maintain valuable connections between

gifted learners and educators, for the benefit of all involved. Our treatment will be located within

research on gifted education and social media respectively, but we will be focused primarily on the

development and support of effective practice’.

There are six participants, five of them offering presentations

Peter Csermely

Tim Dracup, (Convenor)

Joan Freeman (Discussant)

Given the focus of the Symposium, it seemed especially important to build in a social media

dimension, to illustrate the value added to a traditional conference setting.

So we have agreed that there will be a Twitter session during the final hour of the Symposium.

This will involve:

A link to a special session of Global #gtchat powered by the Texas Association for the Gifted

and Talented.

A special #echa hashtag for this session, which we also hope to use to livetweet from the

ECHA conference as a whole (the session will therefore form part of the Conference feed).

A Twitterwall inside the Symposium, enabling those in the room to project their Tweets to

other participants, and those participating at a distance to interact with those in the room.

The abstracts of the five presentations are set out below. As presentations are prepared and

published, I will provide links to them from here.

Depending on the progress we make, it may be possible to engage in social media-driven

discussion of the issues raised ahead of the Symposium. We can then use those contributions to

help frame part of the Symposium proceedings.
