Eric Bibb is one of the most like- able, gentle individuals you could wish to speak to. Ready to embark on a six-week Australian tour, he was happily building cabinets for his home in Helsinki, Finland, when Friday Fix caught up with him. ‘‘What’s the weather like over there?’’ he said. Eric remembers his first trip to the Top End and the weather shock he copped. ‘‘I remember asking someone ‘God, is it always this hot?’ ’’ he said. He recalls a midnight meeting with Bob Dylan when he was just a child. ‘‘My Dad was having a showbiz party and I was a very impression- able 11-year-old who just wanted to play guitar,’’ he said. Bibb remembers Dylan coming in just after midnight. ‘‘He was the big thing at the time. Candle in the Wind was all over the radio,’’ he said. In his pyjamas, Bibb just sidled right up to Dylan and proceeded to quiz him on guitar playing. ‘‘He just told me to ‘keep it sim- ple, forget all that fancy stuff’,’’ he said. The American-born bluesman studied at Columbia University briefly before moving to Paris when he was 19. Now happily re- siding in Finland, he has teamed up with good friend and gifted guitarist Staffan Astner. Their collaboration Troubadour Live is an album of beautifully dis- played acoustic finger picking, with Astner’s electric blues inter- woven. The album is named as such be- cause Bibb sees himself as a ‘‘self- accompanying Troubadour’’. Included on the collaboration is a duet with Australia’s own coun- try music legend Troy Cassar- Daley. Bibb will bring Astner on the six-week Australian tour and the two will play Darwin Enter- tainment Centre’s Play House on Friday, April 1. Jazz/fusion outfit The Jigsaw Collective is now one of Darwin’s slickest outfits since forming in mid 2005. Band leader Jack Tinapple – also of gypsy/funk powerhouse The Neo – said the group had not played Happy Yess since November. ‘‘We’re really looking forward to getting into it on Friday,’’ he said. The band has changed its line-up a few times since forming and Tina- pple said that worked perfectly with the band’s name. ‘‘The Jigsaw Collective is all about the pieces that fit together that make the band what it is,’’ he said. He said the ‘‘collective’’ aspect derived from the fact that all mem- bers were multi-talented. ‘‘Everyone in the band is a songwriter and contributes lyrical- ly as well as playing their instru- ments,’’ he said. The boys will re- lease their first single, entitled Just Don’t Care Anymore, next month and look forward to an EP release mid-year. The night kicks off at 9.30pm with David Spry and company. The Jigsaw Collective will kick in about 10.30pm. The Jigsaw Collective @ Happy Yess, tonight, $5, 18+ event.
